The OS X Error That Should Not Be
April 6, 2008 10:10pm
I love my Macbook Pro and OSX, but it isn't error proof. I might get anywhere from 5-7 errors like that a month (though never anything where I have to reboot, like I used to all the time with windows). It often happens in Opera when I try to watch a Windows media file and the browser must convert it, but it still annoys me. And so far, I have one rally weird error where I couldn't open Finder. I tried EVERYTHING, and after giving up and rebooting, everything went back to normal. Still, that sounds like what I had to deal with every week on my Windows, not every year on my mac (and I still haven't ever gotten a virus, spyware/malware/ or had to defrag).
Scott Sigler's INFECTED -- free download, inexplicably limited
March 27, 2008 10:04pm
I loved Scott Sigler's Earthcore, it's still one of my favorite all time Sci Fi stories. I also enjoyed Ancestor quite a bit, and I hope they eventually get around to making that one into a movie, since someone picked up the rights. I got about 3/4 the way through Infection and just lost interest for some reasons. His podcasts had also filled up with a ton of ads, way more fan mail than was necessary, and various other pieces of filler that just aggrivated me. The orignal Earthcore podcast was like a radio serial from the 40's, and I looked forward each week for the next episode, each of which left on a mini cliff hanger that begged to be finished. I'll come back for Earthcore II, but the commercialization really pissed me off.
Rick "Rickroll" Astley interviewed
March 25, 2008 10:29pm
I loved that Rick actually sort of understood the idea of a "meme", more so than people from older generations seem too.
I just wish the next song people used for something similar to a Rickroll was this song:

(I promise it isn't a RickRoll!)
Hypnotist thief on video
March 25, 2008 10:18pm
This is interesting to me. Last semester in my Psychology course, one of the things my professor seemed to enjoy doing was ragging on the terrible reporting of science in the media. Everything from the Autism "epidemic", to the perceived and actual benefits of meditation, repression, and hypnosis. Hypnosis, he showed, could do nothing besides offer a distraction from pain. Their are people more susceptible to Hypnosis, and one of their traits is a large imagination. I would guess that they are playing along (maybe they think he has a weapon if they don't listen) or perhaps my professor was wrong (though he seemed very intelligent and is head of the department at my college).
Fingertip biometrics at Disney turnstiles: the Mouse does its bit for the police state
March 20, 2008 6:46pm
As much as I hate the idea of a government police state, Disney, and the NFL, and concerts, are all allowed to demean you personal, treat you like a criminal, becuase you are giving up certain rights to be their. If you don't like, you don't have to go, no one is forcing you too. If an someone gets into Disney World with a gun, Disney can get sued by the victims or realatives, so they probably want to do everything in their power to prevent that.
Battlestar Galactica Last Supper
March 4, 2008 9:24pm
Man, I thought I missed the beginning of the forth season last night (for some reason I thought I rememebred seeing the season starting up in March). Luckily (I guess) it's in just one more month (and Season 3 is on DVD in 2 weeks! I know what I'm doing spring break).
Love the picture!
Galactic Civilizations II: big budget game, no DRM
February 2, 2008 11:22pm
Clarification
When I sent in the link about this game, I was in fact, talking about the new game, Sins of a Solar Empire, so maybe more could hear about the game and buy it. This isn't a huge company, but for them to be taking such an awesome (and correct) stance on DRM is great. I'm highly anticipating Sins of a Solar Empire (awesome name btw) and I loved Galactic Civilizations II.
First/Worst: Online Nickname?
December 9, 2007 10:33pm
I have always and will continue to use either:
ogvor - Totally made up name that is garenteed not to be taken as a user name, so I don't have to worry about changeing it for each and every website I register for.
Rax Dakkar - Used for anything video game related (like my xbox live Gamer Tag). I got the name from a random name generator in the game Star Wars: Nights of the Old Republic. I've used it in every video game since.
Greenpeace Takes Electronics Companies to Task, But Are They Fair?
November 28, 2007 8:36am
I find Greenpeace to be to radical and that they are just trying to grab media attention. They accused Apple last year becuase they were succesful, same reason they attack Nintendo now. I mean, the group convinced Nambia not to take GM corn even while thousands starve to death. Whether or not the Genetically modified food is dangerous, it's still food, and their aren't millions of Americans dying everyday from it.
Here's a link to that story
http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1114/p12s01-woaf.html
(Greenpeace isn't mentioned, but they are at the heart of the campaign that lead to the President decideing against feeding his people the corn)
Science and carbs - A big fat lie revisited
November 18, 2007 9:41pm
I can't beleive how few people are mentioning the importance of genetics here. It's a pretty simple (well actually a compicated matter) that our DNA sort sets out our future wieght. As scary as it is to think you don't have control of you body and health, a lot of your wieght simply isn't up to you. The speed of your metabolism effects your weight so much that the only thing that can change it is a life style change. Not a "diet" since that implies a short term process, but a new regiment of foods that work with your body to keep your blood pressure and weight low. And I can't beleive the stuff I hear about how cholesterol isn't bad, from what I have just very recently learned in my college psychology class. Heart attacks are caused by cholesterol, it isn't just a "correlation" that may or may not actually mean anything.
I think in the future, once we can "analyze" our DNA quickly, like in Star Trek or something, we will get completley personal health care treatments and cures, which will make us even healthier than we are today.
Obama will support filibuster of any bill granting telecom immunity
October 25, 2007 9:05pm
As the others are saying, Dodd should get the credit for being the one trying to do this, rather than all the front runners who are now latching on to the popularity of a Democrat actually haveing some backbone!
IMF head: Dollar could collapse
October 25, 2007 9:03pm
@31
As a college student I totally agree. Europe and Canada are looking worth their higher video game prices.
I'm Loving Team Fortress 2
October 3, 2007 8:53am
I am also incredibly excited about the Orange Box. Halo 3 should tide me over until it's relesase next week, and I especially can't wait for Half Life 2 :Episode 2. Back when people where raving about Halo 2, I was quietly enjoying the superior experience of Half Life 2, and I'm so wrapped up in the mysterious story (who the fuck is the G Man!?!?) that I would willingly pay 50$ for it alone. And of course the package also comes with Portal which I coul talk about for pages and the aformentioned TF2.
In other words: Orange Box = Best Deal in Gaming EVAR!
Real-Life Alyx Vance (Half-Life 2) Cosplay/Booth Babes
September 30, 2007 5:15pm
As you made the point in how she dressed, she is also the best representation of a strong female portagonist (that also has the right proportions of the a real female figure) in any video game. Having played all the Half Life games and growing attached to her company I really felt dread when seeing her fall off a bridge (and perhaps dead in the hands of a vortignaut) in a Half-life 2: Episode 2 trailer.

My grandad was 103 when he died. He was really healthy and was able to live by himself with no assistance besides his walking stick up until he was 101. He lived during 3 centuries and served in both World Wars. He owned a computer before my grandad or father did and he had an email address before anyone in my family did.
