Apartments Designed to Challenge Residents

I saw an Arakawa & Gins exhibit at the SoHo Guggenheim in... 1997 or 1998, called... I think "We have decided not to die."

It was cool in model form and even cooler in reality now. They had some crazy ideas.

Cassette tapes are big business in prison

July 22, 2008 3:16pm

My band has released an 11 track purple cassette tape. That's our only release. It came out in January 2008. We haven't hit up the prison market, but let's just say we'd be proud if one of our brothers behind bars got a listen.

Go technology go, just... don't forget useful, durable stuff from the past.

For the interested, the band is here:

Guide to FISA

The question with vacuum cleaner surveillance which has been around in beta forms since the early '00s for email at least. Is when can they for sure trace it down to an single user. For example, if I say the opposite of I don't want to treason in an unencrypted channel and I fit a mass warrant regex, do they have the technology to find me and take me on an "extraordinary" vacation!?

Please contact/post if you have any personal experience. :-)

PS my pgp key is on my blog n stuff if you wanna do it in secret...

With guitars, to heard the old-timers talk about it, sometime around the British invasion (1st...?) the old/used guitar market became the vintage guitar market. I suppose the same thing exists in all categories of consumption. The pros know that the only way they can get rid of their old stuff is by retelling the old stories of classic building techniques, etc.

There's no doubt that pre-CBS Fender guitars were generally better, but most of the design decisions of that era were simply based on economics of a small company. CBS based their moves on economics of a larger company. After that the economics of guitar selling became all about target demographics, etc etc.

So yeah, this stuff is old...

As a materials scientist, I wonder how well they worked out the tolerances of the different little pieces based on coefficient of thermal expansion...!?

House Democrats' shameful compromise

Zuzu: The infrastructure is already in place, worldwide. The patriot act ammendments to FISA were passed long after Echelon was leaked to the public. ECHELON on wikipedia.

House Democrats' shameful compromise

I'm with FlamingPhonebook on this one. The constitution was written in a time where an international phone call or email was... beyond conception.

For me, the overwhelming fact is that all of the major countries out there with the capability to comb through the data passing in and out of them already do. Chances are very high that they tap into lines they shouldn't be as well. Data surveillance is the best chance we have of catching bad things happening.

Of course I disagree with the government on exactly what BAD is, but I think that that shouldn't preclude this sort of data mining. Also, comparing this wiretapping to the FBI's wiretapping of MLKjr and Malcom X is unfair since I believe they were tapped during all calls, not just international.

Droste Effect: when a package's artwork features the package itself

April 18, 2008 6:03pm

Actually, the color cracker jack kid is holding a cracker jack prize packet, not a package of cracker jack. The blue & white cracker jack kid is then holding a Dylan style "Subterranean Homesick Blues" cue card with cracker jack written on it. So you know... those pop-math-arcana people should just stick with that david hasselhoff image that keeps zooming in on him.
