Hot Poop: the story of the band

Why is it that the best things on the WWW are always from the pre-WWW era?

Wow. I love the Internet almost as much as UD loves his digicam.

Milk jug chandelier

They look like teeth. You could reconfigure that to become the teeth in a big skull sculpture for halloween, which would be cool.

Iowa City, IA makes the front page of BoingBoing! Represent! And for such a worthy cause, too.

Ladybug group shot

February 19, 2008 9:34am

One of my favorite ladybug pictures:

Are the bugs pictured above actually those pesky Asian Lady Beetles?

"Despite the wide variation in background color and number of spots, they all share a distinguishing mark on their pronotum. Viewing the beetle from it's topside, the pronotum is that small section that separates the head area from the abdomen (where the wing covers start). There is a mark on the pronotum that looks like a "W" or "M" depending upon whether you are looking at it from the front or rear. All multi-colored Asian lady beetles have this mark that domestic ladybugs lack."

Some great shots.

If you like this, do yourself a favor and check out all of SJ's Detroit images. They're all at least as compelling as this one.

Beautiful high dynamic range photo from Japan

January 18, 2008 7:37pm

As much as I enjoy Flickr, I'd like it even more if they banned HDR images, Explore, and those insane badges that people pollute comments with. Surely it's no coincidence that the use of badges ballooned after Yahoo! took over Flickr?

Memo to EU: DRM is dead

January 5, 2008 12:16pm

"When you give book or CD to another person, you are also giving away your license. But when you are giving file (mp3 for example) you could keep copy and license for yourself and new owner would not know, DRM tries to prevent this."

Here's what I do: When I let a friend borrow a CD, I delete the ripped files from my server. When the friend returns the CD, I rip it again and place the files back on my server. I assume my friend must be doing the same on his end. Right?

Video of Bob Staake's unusual drawing process

January 3, 2008 2:44pm

That is one of the coolest things I've seen posted here in a while. It's like that old saw about a sculptor chipping away at a block of stone until he's removed all the pieces that don't look like his subject.

Motley Fool: litigation isn't a business model, sell RIAA short

But if you're a company like Apple, which innovates and litigates, you're golden.

Record industry practices revisionism about music recording

December 31, 2007 11:33am

Shouldn't Jennifer be on some sort of professional hook as a lawyer for making statements like this? I mean, can you contradict the court record this way, or is it simply a matter of the RIAA changing its mind?

Man with tail

I'm with LECTROID! Jeezum Crow. That's grody. Between this and the Hello Kitty contacts, it's a perfectly freaky end to 2007.

Drunken Xmas brawl at South Pole

I can relate. I came close to knocking out my mother-in-law four or five times over the holidaze, and I was only there for 48 hours.

Teenager in CA arrested for aiming his laser pointer at a jetliner, commuter bus, and a police helicopter

Netgear's tiny Network Attached Storage RAID -- just right for a home entertainment/data server?

December 27, 2007 8:38am

I have a ReadyNAS NV in which I just replaced the PSU after it died a couple months ago (inside warranty, thank God; no data loss). My unit is streaming my DVD rips to an AppleTV and music to my SlimServer running off a Mini on the same wired network. DO NOT try to run the SlimServer service off the Infrant without a RAM upgrade. I've been pleased with my unit since buying it (diskless) almost a year ago. At various times, I've mounted it via NFS, AFP, and SMB from either my Mini or the (hacked) ATV. It does what I need it to do, though I'd think thrice about buying one at the present prices.

Turkey may charge Dawkins' publisher for "insulting believers"

Cheap billionaires

November 28, 2007 9:14am

I don't consider anyone who drives an old Volvo as a cheapskate. Quite the opposite. Have you ever had service done on an old Volvo? You sure have if you own one, and often. Before selling mine a couple years ago, I unlovingly referred to it as "my Swedish whore."

Bathroom radio that's handsome, powerful and water-resistant: Henry Kloss Tivoli Audio PAL

November 9, 2007 9:04am

I asked for and received one (in red) for Christmas a couple years ago, and it is indeed a great little unit. So simple, so portable, sounds superb. No one I show it to believes its sound is coming from that single little speaker. Highly recommended. The aforementioned AUX input is a great feature, too.
