Abby

Bio: I can be judged by what I am interested in: maps, chocolate, girls, boys, the written word, the spoken word, the tunes, the silence. peace, emptiness, caffeine, paint, rosin on the bow and a waiting instrument, no meat but long pork, mints.

Passively Multiplayer Online Game launches -- using game-scoring to keep track of and expand how you browse

The plugin has screwed up one of my other plugins and isn't showing the PMOG toolbar. The existing plugin trumps the PMOG plugin, for sure.

RIAA says DRM is coming back -- in the future, you won't own music

May 9, 2008 7:40am

The RIAA hates used record stores, apparently. If it's no longer possible to own the music I buy, why are we still saying that we buy the music instead of renting it? That's because, in any sane world,
Does this mean that, when seeing concerts, we'll eventually have to sign NDA's about the concerts we attend? As ridiculous as it sounds, that might as well be the case considering the insanity musicians and music consumers already put up with.

On a barely-related note, have any of you contacted Audible about their DRM lately? I'm interested to see if they fed you the same BS line they fed me. "It's the only way the publishers allow us to sell the files online."

Abney Park's vacuum-tube violin mod

May 7, 2008 2:53pm

I've been drooling over an electric guitar for ages. Most are pretty funky-looking anyway, this just jazzes it up a bit, pardon the pun.
@6, 10 - I agree. The extra string has to be a C if it's still a violin (still in fourths). I may be making the mistake of assuming the maker is also a violinist, but any violinist knows how to squeeze extra high notes out of their violin and occasionally wishes they could squeeze lower notes out without playing the delicate "retuning" game.

$250k book scanner swipes through 3,000 pages per hour

April 24, 2008 3:24pm

I've had hardcover books lay flat and wouldn't consider all of them damaged, just old. The newer ones though, hell no, keep that thing away from my babies.

The two arms that come in after the page is raised have got to be the cameras and lamps and aren't nearly as heavy-duty as they seem in the image. Still, I would be afraid of tearing and worse after a few minutes in that device.

Power On Self Test: Dali Coffee Cup

If, perhaps, it's not his mouth spitting the warm brown liquid into your mouth, but his nose.
Makes it all the more appetizing, doesn't it?
(I am referring to his wunderbar 'tash and not a beard)

Video of "Japanese Only" signs in Japan

This is just a business owner getting fed up with the Ugly American (pardon the term, it's just rude people that travel and expect the locals to humor their rudeness) expecting what the owner cannot provide.
Doesn't mean I condone it, but I do understand it.

@32:
Good point, but I don't think Terry Pratchett is fighting for his life. He is fighting for his mind, and for other's lives. Ten years ago, my grandfather was given drugs for his Alzheimer's that would've put marijuana to shame and it didn't help him in the end. Terry Pratchett is fighting for others to be able to make decisions for themselves, including the decision to waste it.
We decide to waste our life every day by doing menial tasks at work, arguing about the next great sports star, following the latest Spears gossip and generally acting like humans do. Most of us aren't out there taking full advantage of life while others fight for our right to do so. Isn't that as tragic? It's as much a waste of the gift of life as wasting a few cells to enjoy life. Terry Pratchett has contributed to that, as painful a truth as that might be. I know I've spent many hours of my life in his little universe and it's like a drug to me. I love it and crave more of it. I've read while I could've been following his example to find something to stop the terror that is Alzheimer's.

Great story, even if it is a fake/fish story.

Discovering the first Americans' bathroom

It's because of Terry Pratchett that I can now remember what coprolite is. It was one of those bits of trivia that would occasionally float by but until it became an insult in the Discworld universe I kept forgetting it.
