RIAA says DRM is coming back -- in the future, you won't own music
May 10, 2008 12:19am
will the recording industry just die already?
it is a relic of a time when an entire industry was needed to get the music from the artist to the fans, the cost of that process has been knocked down at least 15 decimal places since 1995, what on earth makes them think that that should not change anything about how they make money.
you are not needed or wanted, time to go the way of the TV repair man, times change, get a new job.

"Of course Sony's guess turned out to be wrong as well, as their ownership of content has not helped BluRay's High Definition player succeed in a similar Prisoner's Dilemma stand off with Toshiba's HD DVD."
I would argue that this is exactly wrong. It has largely been the combination of the ownership of content (video games and blue ray movies) and the sale of the ps3 (the number 1 selling next gen video player) that has cemented sony's victory in the rapidly ending next gen format wars.
In fact, Warner cited the desire to end that mutually harmful war as the reason to back the side that, at the time, had a slight lead.
Overall though, there are many other examples of bizarre and arbitrary forms of competition harming everyone involved including the customers. Self perpetuating self destruction - a motto for our time.

US intelligence honcho channels Orwell, redefines privacy

@#43 zuzu
they already have ways around that, if your using encryption then you obviously are hiding something which means they watch you more closely and get the information one way or another.
i wouldnt be surprised at all if they have supercomputers pumping out lists of people who use encryption. given the secrecy (read unaccountability) that the NSA operates in, and the known absence of judicial oversight, you are probably better off hoping they dont notice you than to make any attempt to protect your own rights.
after all, that is their job! the NSA should just change its name to The Minestry of Privacy already.
"...instead "privacy" will now mean having the right to expect that governments and companies won't tell other people what they learn when they spy on you."
given that we already know that companies (at&t) will tell other people (the NSA) what they learn when they spy on you, this quote just goes to show that they dont care that they are violating your rights. privacy has been traded for the myth of security and it is just a matter of time until systemic corruption infects 'the watchers' who have the unchecked power to digitally track anyone.
Poker bots could destroy online poker playing

"Indeed, our government might even think about subsidizing the development and use of these bots."
that is far to forsighted and intelligent a response, it will never happen.
if anything, the online gambling special intrest will get the governement to allow random searches of all online poker players!

i would start to get paranoid now but its already to late, whats the point
violating peoples privacy to ensure their security is the easiest thing in the world to rationalize, too bad its unconstitional.
its official, live free or die is only a bumpersticker. our freedom is consuming itself. i would rather die in a terrorist attack than live in a country where i dont have the freedom to be left alone.

Southern CA wildfires: good Lord they are huge.
October 23, 2007 11:44am
I had to evacuate in 2003, the areas that burned had not seen fire for at least 20 years. It seems like everything that did not burn then is burning now.
I see once again that the national news focuses mainly on the LA area, never mind that little burg down south called San Diego.
CNN's Glenn Beck: "people who hate America" losing homes in So CA wildfires

if glen beck knew anything about san diego he would know that
1) it is a very conservative area, going republican in every presidential and mid term election in recent memory
2) it is the largest military instalitation on earth housing over half the US navy and marine corp and their families as well as the families of those men and women fighting in iraq right now
3) more san diegans have fallen in iraq than any city in the country
be careful glen, you might accidentally not support the troops... ignorant prick
