Nvidia: CPU dead, long live the GPU

April 25, 2008 6:12pm

Huh. My boss is gonna be happy. All those servers we keep buying to run VMWare ESX server have expensive Intel Xeons in them. If we stop buying those silly CPU things, we'll save buckets!

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 25, 2008 10:38am

Who in their right mind looks at a Britney Spears album as music?

The album isn't dead. It might die, as you predict, but if it does we'll still have everything between 1950 and 20-something to enjoy.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm halfway through The Decemberists' The Crane Wife, a brilliant album from 2006.

Sharp-Wilcom's minuscule UMPC out on June 20th in U.S.

April 25, 2008 10:18am

No linky?

Well anyway, I agree that the first thing anyone should do with this is to delete Vista and install Ubuntu or something. But honestly, 1024x600 on 5" screen? That's hovering around "unusable".

Fluidhand is the future of prosthetic arms

My impression is that what you described is unique to the deaf community. I've never heard of any other community of disabled people being so protective of their condition.

Sunview handheld media player has built-in pico-projector

April 18, 2008 10:17am

And so it begins.

Not too long before we'll be seeing these in PDAs and smart phones, I reckon. Pretty darned nifty.

Now if they can just work out the holographic projector. Help me Obi-wan...

Citizens still tossing too many electronics in the trash

April 17, 2008 1:43pm

They should stop tempting us with so many damned new gadgets, and also build them to last (like the old days I've heard about). Then this problem wouldn't be so bad.

Video: Steve Jobs keynote parody hits all the right notes

April 16, 2008 12:26pm

I absolutely love good impersonations; they're my favorite form of comedy. But there's one problem with impersonations: you have to be familiar with the person being parodied, or it just doesn't work for you. Having never seen a Jobs speech, this guy does nothing for me. I'm sad.

Sigma DP-1 Camera reviewed (Verdict: Wait for the DP-2)

April 15, 2008 4:17pm

Since no other camera nerds have chimed in, I'll be the pedant who corrects you Joel. You said "...they might be able to take a swing [at] the Canon G9 and other rangefinders", but neither the G9 nor the DP-1 are rangefinders. Indeed there are only two digital rangefinders that I can think of - the Epson RD-1 and the Leica M8.

As a pixel-peeping photographer, I'm pretty excited about the availability of this camera, even though I can't afford it. All it's flaws notwithstanding, it is a dream come true for those of us who've pined for big-sensor quality in a compact.

The arms race escalates between spammers and CAPTCHA

April 15, 2008 12:48pm

John, yes, for sure. But for each single bot, you could cut down its output from 1440 a day to just a few accounts per service per day. Or even less, if you make the rules tighter.

Video: Nitro-powered R/C car does 200MPH+

April 15, 2008 12:42pm

If may estimates of the circumference of the track and the revolutions per second are close, then it's doing about 240mph. But something seems fishy about this video.

The arms race escalates between spammers and CAPTCHA

April 15, 2008 12:12pm

Admittedly I haven't read the article yet, but based on the info in this post:

If one bot can make 1440 hotmail accounts a day per machine, couldn't the hotmail (and others) people make a huge difference by simply not allowing more than, say 3 new accounts to be created per day from a given IP?

Blue Jeans Cable responds to Monster Cable cease-and-desist with Hundred Hand Slap

This is awesome. Can someone please submit the audioholics article to digg, etc? I have no memberships on those sites but I would like to see this get the biggest following possible. Eat bad press and die, Monster!

I only wish more people had the knowledge to be able to stand up to the world's jerks in the way Denke is doing. The world seriously needs this. Legal bullying should not be allowed.

Best of BBtv - Dude totally flips out at E3

April 15, 2008 10:57am

That was pretty funny. (But #1 is right; I probably wouldn't have laughed if I was actually there and saw him acting like that)

A brief search didn't turn up anything conclusive, but it sounds like he was a manic depressive so I'm guessing that's what killed him.

Either that or he was tazed.

Photo of honor system at bookstore in Ojai, CA

April 15, 2008 10:33am

Some people have mentioned public transport systems which have the odd ticket inspector who will fine you if you don't have a ticket. That's not really an honor system, when you think about it.

Wow, that Sunday NY Times must be a fat paper. 5 bucks! I hope it has a lot of comics. (Left coaster here, and not a paper reader anyway)

Sharp/Willcom D4 UMPC is tiny, gorgeous, and runs Vista

Hmm, that is a downer. Oh well, can't afford it anyway!

#8 - Cloudbook? How is that relevant? We're talking handhelds here. The Cloudbook is in a totally different category.

I never get it when people find out you're shopping for something and suggest something completely irrelevant. "You want a shaver? Hey, you should check out these lawn mowers!"

Sharp/Willcom D4 UMPC is tiny, gorgeous, and runs Vista

April 14, 2008 4:57pm

Joel, you've been my favorite tech writer ever since your Gizmodo days. I love how you juxtapose the irrational desirability with the practical unusability of this (sorry - I'm no writer - but you get my drift). I agree with you and I want one because it's freakin cute. But if I'm going to blow a bunch of cash on a tiny computer, I think the HTC Shift might be more to my liking (see Dynamism).

#3 - seriously? It looks almost nothing like the Atari.

A: It depends on what type of work you want them to do.

Cartoon explains the difference between causality and covariation

March 31, 2008 5:47pm

My wife has trouble differentiating these two things, which can make discussions (especially debates) with her difficult. It also causes her to just say some darn silly things. Or at least, I think that's what causes her to say silly things. But I might be confusing causality with covariation.

Man installing satellite TV kills wife

"Officials are trying to decide whether to file charges"

WHAT??? TRYING TO DECIDE?! WTF! A STUPID STUPID STUPID IDIOT KILLED HIS WIFE AND YOU HAVE TO ***THINK*** ABOUT WHETHER TO FILE CHARGES?

If this guy doesn't get manslaughter, I can't go on living in this country.

A Guide to Buying a Missile Silo

March 25, 2008 4:12pm

Amazing how a company selling multi-million dollar realestate has a web site with an extremely Web 1.0 feel: http://www.missilebases.com/

And in keeping with their out-datedness, they are apparently still living in the century the properties were built. From the front page: "These historic defense structures are the castles of this 20th Century."

Why Are Projector Bulbs So Expensive?

March 18, 2008 2:42pm

Joel, I think perhaps a more enlightened (oh yes I did) way to ponder this question is this: why are some things so cheap?

The answer, in many cases, is production volume.

So until the production volumes of projector lamps reach sufficiently high figures, they are going to cost a lot to make.

Video: Boston Dynamics' Latest Big Dog Pack Bot

March 18, 2008 11:43am

Wow!! This blows me away. People are talking about how cool Dextre is, but *this* thing is the future. This is amazing -- and I'm not talking about how anthropomorphic it is, although that in itself is freaky. This robot's ability to stay on its feet is fantastic. This is the future. Inspiring.

Video: Purported Dell Call Center Employee Calls Customer "Little Girl"

@the previous two comments: uh, I don't think anyone is pretending the video is real. Obviously actors are playing out the parts of the people in the alleged recording. Think about it.

Japanese "melody roads" play tunes as you drive over them

November 14, 2007 10:55am

This is up there with the most stupid civil engineering ideas I've ever heard of.

I want the quietest road possible. If doing the speed limit makes noise, I will do anything but the speed limit.

A far more sensible idea would be to have the road make an annoying noise when you speed.

Utterly ridiculous.
