"Oh, and as for the word: "own3d"? Do people over the age of 13 (chronologically or emotionally speaking) still use that "word"?"
yeah, but in a kind of geeky self parody way more than anything.

Eco Button: Save Energy By Buying Something Unnecessary

also #13/12
I think people think about solar energy in entirely the wrong way, to convert one energy source (heat, primarily) into another (electrical) is hugely innefficient. It would be much better (imvho) to concetntrate on it's uses as a thermal energy provider rather than a photovaltaic one. we should promote mechanical means like wind/tidal etc to generate electricity and design with all of these systems integrated (i.e passive solar designed houses, solar hot water/refrigeration systems) these are also much more passive in their production and technologies than a pv panel, no matter how advanced it may be.

I spend alot of time at 'underground' uk music festivals in the summer, either crewing for my VJ g33k friends or relaxing.
what I mostly do also is get shitted, in as pleasant a fashion as possible. we already have a lounge we take replete with couches, benches and tables. To be able to make proper cocktails will make this years festival season perfect.
I'll have 2 please.

Takuan, you just got own3d!
We already live in a world that censors. We do not give the Taleban or pro al-quaeda types air time because of their extremist and dangerous views. To refuse an extremist from another mind set is not to limit freedom of speech, but to refuse to give any credence to that belief, one that is dangerous to our culture. It does of course start a worrying precedent in the shape of limiting freedom of speech, but that has already been done by banning the taleban etc.

#64 KICKYFAST - I totally agree with you on the whole inherent nature of the gun, but you lose me on the whole
"I think you can feel the power a gun gives over life and death, and that is what you are attracted to, not aesthetic beauty or sport."
bit tho.
From the point of view of a recreational gun user I am drawn to the skill and science behind the whole process, not to a macho totemistic power. It is too simplistic to have such black and white divisions.

#17 RUGGERREDHAWK - I like the idea of guns, I used to shoot a rifle on a range and love the technical skill and the physics of the whole thing, I think it's unbelievably elegant. I just don't like a culture that is flooded with guns and repeatedly shown to be immature in the approach and use of them (and I'm not singling out the US here). They are mostly designed for one thing, which I would rather see 100% less of thank you very much. Marksmanship FTW.
#20 101 - I said *such* a gun culture, I am perfectly aware that we have a burgeoning gun culture here, it is very different tho to the good ol' US of A.

@ #5 - that is damned impressive, it's the reload bit thats awesome.
still pretty glad we don't have such a gun culture in the UK, although it's prob not too far off, at least for the government...

The TSA has a blog
January 31, 2008 11:46am
The carbon footprint may be the same(sic) but the type of pollution caused is totally different, there is the chemical pollutant at higher levels that doesn't disperse properly aswell as noise pollution and impact on birdlife (somebody please correct me or site examples as I haven't got any to flesh out at the mo), so driving is always going to have a lower overall impact then flying. I'm not saying this justifies TSA's ridiculous antics by the way ;-)

#19 - no creativity? does making an accurate representation of an image or still life make it an autistic skill? I'm pretty sure that this has always been seen as a classic artistic style you know. How do you mean Gimmick too?
personally I'm with Bugs @ #14, my pen control is truly terrible, I think these are beautiful and really interesting. Nice links to other artists too, fanks!

Poker game interrupted by police raid
January 16, 2008 12:02pm
if you read the article it states that the group consisted of about 100 members, not that they were all present. This looks like a regular league, probably only about 25 people in attendance at any one time running a few tables at a time. The Cops have raided because of the cover that was being paid towards drinks and snacks, not because of the poker or any gambling. They suspected that the organiser who was collecting this cover was making money off it. still completely lame and retarded imo. To be fair theres not a great deal of information to be making any kind of judgement - on face value it's another 'cops are retarded and stupid and are wasting our time and money' story, I'd like to believe there is something dark and sinister lurking behind this that we know nothing of, therefore validating the actions of the SFPD.
not likely tho is it?
Do Kids Still Play with Wooden Toys?
January 16, 2008 6:46am
We bought a load of wooden toys for my daughter, lots of Brio ( http://brio.knex.com/ )and some local hand crafted stuff. I was aware that there was a great deal of nostalgia attached alongside a reluctance to buy loads of horrible plastic crap. However, she loved them and still plays with the brio train set occasionally (she's now 10 and mostly a sylvanian families nut, so the trains go well with it)
I have found that kids go mad with desire for the latest plastic fantastic but that the enthusiasm wains fairly quickly when the limitations are reached, with the more old fashioned wooden toys there seems to be a greater imaginative interaction that lasts longer, like the wooden articulated digger for ezample, I mean, grown ups want to play with that!
I'm all for simpler toys made from materials I'm happy for my 2 year old to suck on, these cheap plastics have all kinds of nasty attached. imvho naturally ;-)

Smoking Mittens

#6 - If you look at the product you'll see that they aren't trigger finger rip offs, they are actually a complete mitten with a metal tube inserted for the evil smoking stick.
#4 - it's the Lolita angle, just dressed up in fur coats and mittens instead of wool.....or is that a different metaphor? I forget...

Price of rare goods skyrockets while infinite digital goods crash
January 8, 2008 3:57am
#12 - it's not just that it has a high resale value, one reason that the originals hold so much fascination and therefore value is the inherent level of skill involved in it's creation and all the associated history. If I look at a reproduction I am merely looking at a 2D image and can evaluate the picture on those merits (which is fine) but if I'm infront of the original there is a much more to evaluate, less tangible admittedly, but still very valuable. I think that is the point of the article, in our new digitised domain reproductions and counterfeits are par for the course so hold less value, a 'hard copy' or original will therefore be worth much more (to the right person obv.)

Music producers mixing for MP3
December 29, 2007 10:01am
As a self confessed anologue whore, this is End of Dayz talk, seriously, the whole point with music is to make something that sounds amazing, to deliberately over produce something to allow for poor playback media hardly encourages devolpment of said media or allows people to experience music the way it was meant to be.
Down with this type of thing!
Woman asked to leave Walmart after staying 72 hours
December 24, 2007 6:07am
To the dismay of alot of 'ethical' UK shoppers, walmart bought out the Asda chain and is slowly but surely developing these travesties across our fair land. Personally I think they are a great idea - you gather a vast demographic under one roof. Sure fire way to save on smart bombs imvho.
