I do know that the more philosophers you have on any committee, the less likely it is that the committee will actually accomplish anything in a timely fashion. And for some reason, they seem to get into sparring matches with the mathematicians. Which is entertaining, but not productive.
I've never heard of a committee of philosophers, other than some academic faculty group deciding on what the department is going to spend its money on or what poor schlep is going to be admitted to its graduate program.
As far as getting into scraps with mathematicians, the only thing I can remember is a math student claiming that all logic is really just Boolean algebra, and since Boole was a mathematician, logic is a part of math and not philosophy.

Philosophy of Art is a very interesting subject. I took a course about ten years ago and we read and discussed various people's (e.g. Kant, Santayana, Nietzsche) views on aesthetics. Kant wasn't very interesting in terms of what art actually is, but he did have some interesting things to say on how to look at it. Basically, he suggests being impartial. This school of thought, I think, would suggest distancing one's self from the socially taboo nature of the work, but since that is the intention of the "artist", it would probably also say that it isn't art. For myself I don't really care if it is art, or if some group thinks it should be called art; it's more a matter of whether I think it's good or not. I don't.
Homeland Security charter school will train tomorrow's prison guards
May 6, 2008 7:35am
Serving the country "honorably"?
When you join the military you swear an oath to defend the Constitution, but this is just BS. When you are a soldier, you do what you're told regardless of whether it's constitutional. I'm a veteran, I know.
For those that joined the military in the hope of doing something like saving helpless civilians from genocide--something honorable--I'm sorry that you are in Iraq and not Sudan or Rawanda. You should have seen it coming from our country's history.
For those of you who were given a choice of jail or the military, or if you just like to cause other beings pain and suffering, I have no respect for you.
So can the "honorable" bit. It's a myth.

Before 1042, Britons considered the depth of a container of ale insufficient unless the king's royal member could not touch the bottom. When Edward came back from Normandy, this screwed everything up, as his was relatively small as compared to Harthacanute. Things only got worse in 1066 when Harold took over and eventually the Normans had to step in and show everyone who had the largest. The people had to agree, as their bellies were full only after three flagons.

I don't typically use those terms but I'm overwhelmed by the number of Randian fanboys. I studied Philosophy for 6 years, and I've never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, but, in terms of validity of argumentation, Rand gets low marks when compared to thinkers like Aristotle, Kant, Plato, Descartes, numerous philosophers of science, etc. That's probably why in all those classes I took, Rand was never on the reading list. I had to go out of my way to read some of that stuff. I also saw some film of her at an interview, and her responses to the questions were circular and question-begging. Those are the sort of responses you'd expect to hear from someone who has a definite coherent view, but of a made-up world that we don't live in.
So what attracts people to Rand? Probably the fact that her stuff is wrapped in a fictional scenario where certain points of view are appealing. But once you start believing that the real world is a Rand novel, that's where you've gone wrong.

Back in the day, cops used to have to physically restrain you if you resisted. Now they just taze you from a distance and dump you in the back of their car. So much easier and safer for the officer. It seems rather obvious that the risk of using tazers (i.e. death) outweigh the benefits (i.e. physical strain on police muscles).

Tokyo fetish-fashion: "injured idol"
December 6, 2007 10:34am
It's interesting to see where people draw the line at cultural relativism and hedonism. For example, in some cultures female circumcision is expected, welcomed, and not rejected by females. They are not being forced against their will. Yet, in the west, the usual response is "that's wrong". Other than that and a few other examples, we tend to be rather hedonistic and want no one to tell us what is right and wrong.

"It's a way to demean them by portraying them as weak, helpless, physically inferior."
But demeaning something can also add to its sexual appeal, and that's what they're selling. Also, these women in the pictures probably don't see it that way, but as a golden opportunity to further their careers. And you could say the same thing about prostitution. Go on up to a whore (excuse me, "sex worker") and tell her that her job demeans her and see what she (or he) says.

Deregulation in the utilities industry results in higher costs whenever those costs are not expected to greatly affect consumption (also in the oil industry), contrary to the consequentialist arguments of deregulation proponents. The same thing is happening in the communications sector.

How to stop restaurant tip fraud
November 15, 2007 7:07pm
So, when figuring out how much to tip, I need to add a whole-dollar amount (what otherwise would be the tip), and then add the first two digits to find out what the last digit should be, and then I add the difference to the subtotal. Or I just save my receipt until it shows on the banking statement that I'd have to check anyway. Or I just pay cash. Hmm.

Universities are considered ISPs, so they are as responsible as any other ISP. Here, they are already implementing efforts to identify every single user on the network.
What came before the Big Bang? Science radio show from Canada
November 11, 2007 7:40am
Take a look at Newton's theory of gravitation--it does not explain what gravity is yet it provides a mathematical description of how it works, much like how string theory is a mathematical description of how the universe works. Einstein's theory replaced Newton's because it had greater explanatory power, not because Newton's was falsified.
