BB reader: "Two FBI agents just showed up at my door for taking photos in the Port of Los Angeles"

May 14, 2008 3:40pm

whilst this stuff is all very important , i really miss the boing boing that was a 'collection of wonderful things' can there not be a new category f boing boing civil liberties like there is a gadgets section.

especially since this is usually just some plastic policeman / rent-a-cop with an ego it really wears down the impact.

this really isn't a wonderful thing. has boing boing dropped that? I notice it's not in the headline any more.

are things that bad? and will ignoring the wonderfil help?

From rendering to reality: Asus's desktop Eee PC

I think it looks pretty good. the oval metal base is a bit "shit nightclub chic" anyway..

I hope the 'art' is removable.

Seamless ice-spheres for superior whiskey-rocks

May 8, 2008 4:29am

clean? glass?... what's wrong with the bottle.

wouldn't leaving an ice cube in that contraption for a few minutes raise the temp so much that any increase in melting time due to the shape would be lost?

how much whisky are you drinking if you need an 80mm sphere of ice to put in it? (that's over 3 inches BTW)

Intel Atom headed for miniature motherboards: perfect for homebrew gaming consoles?

Imperial pint glasses declare European conformity

May 3, 2008 3:16am

186,000 British drivers fined in 2006 for driving while yapping

April 30, 2008 8:27am

as a london cyclist drivers using their phone is scary.

i think they are more distracting because the person you are speaking to is not in the same car, shutting up when traffic is busy etc.

but the biggest distraction is the text messaging and looking up numbers and frankly playing with your phone that keeps drivers eyes off the road.

given that a handsfree kit is about £15 there isn't much reason not to use one.. though i wish hire cars had to come with them pre-fitted.

Chopping down trees to make books is good for the environment, provided you then line your walls with bookcases

April 20, 2008 4:53am

The main problem would be that you would have to completely line the wall with books not just the occasional one like on cory's wall there.

wearing half a jacket doesn't keep you that warm

I don't think the bills would 'rocket' by any stretch of the imagination. especially since the presence of windows in exterior walls tends to mean they are less likely to be used for a good covering of books.

All it's likely to do is make your books go mouldy sooner.

What Would You Put in Your Perfect Backpack?

April 11, 2008 12:39am

personnaly I think combining the bag and the tech is probably a bad idea, the tech needs to be much more removable / replaceable / upgradable than the good old bag that should last decades.

I'd also ask why backpack and not something on wheels I got an excellent travel bag from john lewis in the uk that has rollerblade wheels on it for free rolling.. my shoulders thank me for it. sure they are a bit heavier but you carry less.

oh and I also am having loads of my posts eaten by the "text you entered is wrong" machine

Plantable greeting-cards embedded with seeds

April 10, 2008 4:36am

would be slightly more poetic if less practical, if they contained tree seeds, that way it would eventually replace the wood used to make the paper.

Using Tech to Make Heating Houses More Efficient

April 8, 2008 1:05pm

in the uk all new houses (or a certain proportion in a development.. i think 25%) need to be air tightness tested this way. I personally think it is a step a little too far in an already highly regulated industry (in a country with massively overpriced housing) but it does do a good job of highlighting the issue to the builder on the street.

Speaking to people who used to do this kind of testing the kinds of things they'd find were jaw-dropping.

Camera glasses on sale -- goodbye, photography bans

April 8, 2008 1:10am

I assume the headphones mean there is an MP3 player in there.

or is that just to excuse the bulk of the glasses.

Door-chain maze

April 2, 2008 12:47am

don't put it on a fire door though!

Tokyo dog-rental service

March 31, 2008 1:47am

the other aspect of this of course it the unseen neglect of people who buy dogs as a fad or buy one when they don't have the time/space to look after it. maybe this service would reduce that....

though you are all right that it sounds dodgy as hell.

Swiss hotel bedside table with USB power-point, VGA and audiovisual inputs

March 15, 2008 3:32am

we are architects and are installing these in some new hotels in london... they are a good piece of kit.. except they are super-plastic and pretty ugly close up. if they did a better bezel they would do much better, also why don't they integrate the rj45/cat5 outlet that we need to install for guest use. by the way that is a usb-power on the right which is a nice touch.

why so ugly!?

Remixing the London police's anti-photographer terrror posters

March 5, 2008 3:53pm

#35.. oddly if there were a real threat, say from actual imposter mutants or aliens, I'd want a publicly nominated system... peer reviewed of course. It could be massively efficient in police time.

What the current uk government seem to want is hysteria and had wringing.

I wonder how much it would cost to have one properly installed on the underground

if we chip in we should get at least one place... and an article in a few papers.

Real-life "Slurm" Beverage Coming to a Planet Near You

sadly i wonder if they have just done this to prevent other people releasing it. so we may have to wait 1000 years to see it.

February 1, 2008 9:02am

I can't believe I was about to comment on the bolt/screw thing as well.

Bobkat is right i realise though, he reminded me that a grub screw is the little headless bolts that you tighten with an alen key that completely go within the threaded hole.

might be worth asking in-store. take a picture, might be kinda hard to describe!

The Macbook Air is Not a Sub-Notebook

January 16, 2008 7:34am

as someone pointed out in another forum the motherboard on this could easily be put in a umpc... air nano in 6 months?

sure most people don't NEED the upgradable ram and replaceable battery but i bet almost everyone will wish it had more than one usb port, especially since so many people plug mice into laptops.

The Macbook Air is Not a Sub-Notebook

January 16, 2008 2:33am

As an eee owner I do think apple have missed a trick, the small form factor is great for the stick it in th bag and forget abot it. and the eee 7" screen is fine for most browsing and open office etc. 10" would be great.

I think there is a real niche there, you can say the iphone will let you surf but it isn't going to let you do much in the way of actual work.

I think most people are dissapointed because they wanted to buy the apple sub-notebook... but the air doesn't do it.

the other point of course is that thin doesn't mean light, structural design beig what it is I bet it could have been made lighter if it was the same width as normal... and who's really so worried about the width other than for the 'wow that's thin' factor.

Krups BeerTender Bringing Nasty Draught Heineken to U.S. Kitchens

January 9, 2008 7:23am

USA may have a thriving range of micro and 'craft' brews but has to have by far the worst mainstream beers on the planet.

the biggest selling beers in the US:
1. Bud Light
2. Budweiser
3. Miller Lite
4. Coors Light
5. Corona Extra

It might well be that US heineken is brewed in the states to fit in with 'us tastes' in the UK it's not the best by far but it's passable..

nothing compared to the mighty bittburger of course

TV star publishes bank details in anti-privacy editorial, gets ripped off

January 8, 2008 1:47am

this highlights more the problem with direct debits that with clarkson.

this isn't someone stealing his money, he could have it all reversed in seconds as said above. and companies have to be pre-approved to be able to use direct debits... this doesn't stop it being a problem for anyone who's phone company has screwed up their bill and instantly withdrawn loads of money from your account.

clarkson is playing a character,a rather odious one at times.. and doing very well out of it. don't believe the hype.

I think the raptor thing is right, they often use them to deter pidgeons around large public buildings in london.

though in my head i'm thinking it's cannibal pidgeons

Deals: Electric Kettle on Amazon for $12

January 5, 2008 3:21am

frankly the idea of people not having a kettle is pretty baffling to me.

In the uk one of the most common peices of advice when moving hose is to keep the kettle in a well marked box near the top so you can make a cup of tea the second you arrive at your new house

I drink neither Tea nor Coffee but still use the kettle for cooking as it'll boil water much faster than the hob.

T-Amp Gen 2: Simple Stereo Amplifier

November 29, 2007 8:07am

I have one of the original ones and it is amazingly good quality. certainly much better than anything i've owned.

I see they now do a PCI card version
http://www.si5.com/products.php?pID=4038

hopefully this second get will improve the built quality etc which was a bit plasticy in the original.

London Monument to disppear into the guts of monstrous accordion

November 23, 2007 5:59pm

can we have a ban on all links so the daily mail please whilst i am no fan of ken shuttleworth (formerly the partner of norman foster but without his rigor or restraint.) and this is a truly average building by the way, barely brave or dramatic, tucked away amongst average city blocks and meant for similarly average clients, I foreseen less press when it opens that is has received today.

but the daily mail... really?

Secret underground temple seized by police

November 23, 2007 5:41pm

what's the most worrying thing is the number of posts on this blog linking to the daily mail. it's a pretty hideous right wing no-brain-required 'send them all home' pile of nonsense, i know this is a pretty innocuous story but i expect better from boing boing. if they linked to the national inquirer you'd at least expect a disclaimer, i'm worried the american reader might think this a a reasonable and erudite news source other than just dirge.

Phone Rental in Japan?

October 2, 2007 10:32am

I used go mobile.. excellent service, didn't seem very expensive, decen tough phones.

they were also very good when my hotel got changed at the last minute, they tracked me down to my new hotel and got me a new phone asap.

though if you have a 3g phone you seem to be able to get good coverage in tokyo at least.

Police can retroactively bug your phone for your breadcrumb trail

September 25, 2007 12:37am

This has been used in at least a few criminal cases in the UK. the one i remember is wherer they proved that a killer had sent text messages from his victims phone to suggest they were still alive. they did it by comparing the locations of his phone and the victims over time.

since it was (i think) in central london this was worryingly accurate.

the big question of course is how old does info have to be to be 'stored' not 'live'?

Fire protection company damaged by fire

September 5, 2007 3:17pm

I think it is ironic rather than 'Alanic'.

interesting to note that although Alanis rightly gets a lot of criticism for the song.. isn't righting a song about irony that contains no irony slightly meta-ironic?

the horrible truth is that she might have out-ironed the pedants.
