HOWTO encrypt your Gmail

May 15, 2008 7:49pm

That's, well, nice to know. But why would I care to encrypt emails of funny cat pictures and the generally inane messages I send during my daily business?

I suppose if I wanted to email confidential stuff, financial information, or my SSN, or whatever, encryption would provide some nice placation of uneasiness.

But in general, why would the average user bother? Seems paranoid and self-important, as if MY emails are SO substantial that they need to be written in invisible ink. Am I missing something? Am I supposed to preemptively kick big brother in the groin?

Stanford creative writing class produces a graphic novel

May 9, 2008 2:43pm

Alas, Tom Kealey! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow
of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath
borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is!

Not really. But really, Tom's great.

The iChime offers customized doorbells for the cheap and obnoxious

you could have written: this is a doorbell, it plays MP3s. that's what any other gadget blog would write.

thank you, on behalf of the internets, for not being every other gadget blog.

I love good viral marketing, but I hate when I can't tell what the product is. Is this for the new Batman movie?

Inflatable tube man dances to Cream's "Glad"

April 22, 2008 11:11pm

There use to be a small tube man in downtown SF on Market, near the 7-11. One day it whipped down and smacked me in the face. I thought it knocked off my glasses and I immediately searched the ground--- realizing, of course, that my glasses were still on my face. Some guy in a suit laughed.

I was ATTACKED by a tube man, and vowed to never forgive him or his inflatable brethren. Until just now because that was a joyous video.

Robbins Barstow's spectacular amateur films

April 20, 2008 12:06pm

I want to be Robbins Barstow when I grow up.

Avatar Machine - Marc Owens' wearable simulator of virtual worlds.

April 13, 2008 8:15pm

When I grow up, I want to be an Angry Elvis gang member. It seemed to me that approaching those dudes exhibited the lack of common sense that often accompanies real talent. Just kidding.

But if anyone's interested in real research related to this, Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab is going at it (but not from a gaming perspective). I used to cloth the avatars... meaning they all wore Hawaiian shirts. There's also a lot avatar research at UC Santa Barbara, I think.

Gogol Bordello's punk gypsy

April 5, 2008 2:10pm

oh! shameless plug: for anyone who receives Link TV (Dish Network ch9410 or Direct TV ch375), we're showing a doc about Gogol Bordello called 'The Pied Piper of Hutzovina' this Sunday at 8, and a few other times in April.

Fun sticker: "Toilet cameras are for research"

March 20, 2008 11:35am

absolutely, #12, bookyloo. Ritual is crowded with greasy hipness. It's reached some kind of critical mass and jumped the shark. And yet... I'm still compelled to go there from time to time.

Ornate Steampunk LEGO Mecha

very Final Fantasy VI, wouldn't you say? I hadn't really noticed, but FF has been steampunkin' for years.

Blogging from TED 2008

February 28, 2008 3:19pm

Is that sarcasm, #22? I bet it's sarcasm. Probably sarcasm.

I, for one, welcome the soup 'n sandwich coverage. Mainstream media never discusses sandwiches or their too oft ignored partners in crime, soups.

Unusual old Japanese model kits

There are some cultures in which bowling wild boars are an essential part of their religious iconography. Seriously, you guys. You're so ignorants.

I'm surprised by the negative comments; since when is art supposed to be 'enjoyable'? It ain't Kinkade. It's brutal and powerful stuff.

Nixon Tetris & Pong Watch Isn't Real

November 26, 2007 4:32pm

Dude! I had a working Tetris watch in grade school. I think I got it from the merchandise catalog that occasionally came with Nintendo Power. It made me feel like the king of kings.

Amazon Kindle: the Web makes Amazon go bad crazy

November 20, 2007 6:13pm

Buying and selling and lending used eBooks? Do crazy people actually do that, or want to do that? I know it's a matter of principle, and I prefer dead trees anyway, but c'mon, that's silly.

I have some jpegs that I'll lend you, and a couple animated gifs, but not for keeps! I'll want them back, and you better not recompress them.

Cardboard rocket-ship playhouse

November 18, 2007 3:00pm

Oh, also, wouldn't it be a great idea to hand out those aforementioned cardboard rivets to the homeless?

Cardboard rocket-ship playhouse

I agree with PFH. This hardly seems like an effective solution for blasting little kids into space. Jeff Bezos spent how much on this thing?

BBtv in the news: Boston Globe, NY Mag

November 13, 2007 12:35pm

I think the talking heads in the blue ether worked pretty well, and were plenty enjoyable, though that format does indeed lend itself to the reading of headlines interspersed with video clips, which ain't the most innovative blogoshow. Though actually, y'know, people (me) are too lazy to read the underlying textual bits that accompany the vids--- Boing Boing Regular is already a textual multimedia environment--- so it's important never to have necessary introductory info in the words.

Whatevs; I suspect you people are trained professionals, and the median will be found.

Y'all must have recorded a good hour or two and edited it down to a few minutes. I think we need an uncut version with explicit sandwich-making.

Mister Leno's garage

I wonder if he ever runs into Dean Kamen at the denim shirt store.

Weird canned foods

October 18, 2007 10:50am

I can hardly believe it---we were all recently informed of non-violent silk and the plight of the silkworm on boingboingtv, and now this!?

This blatant disregard for worm-rights is ridiculous. Why doesn't Bono do something about this?

Mark's Motor/EcoNouveau Fashion

October 15, 2007 8:21pm

I, for one, am glad that someone is FINALLY trying to raise awareness of the unspoken silk worm genocide. The silent killing has gone on long enough, and doesn't even get coverage in the mainstream media!

How many worms have to die before we stop pulling the silky smooth covers over our eyes and wake up?

Armed Robots on the Streets of Iraq
