HOWTO Make a t-shirt rug

It looks pretty bad until you see a picture of his floor before, just plywood. Definitely needed something to cover it up.

Laika the space dog gets a statue

April 11, 2008 9:38pm

Nick Abadzis's graphic novel Laika is really excellent and about brought me to tears quite a few times while reading (though I'm a sucker for sad animal stories, ie WE3). Cory has blogged about it in November (http://www.boingboing.net/2007/11/19/laika-graphic-novel.html).

@6 Takuan: I think it's because people can say or do something about the things happening to them, but animals (especially domesticated ones) are mostly helpless with little recourse but to trust people.

Homeless people disguised as stranded tourists sleep on Heathrow's benches

Seeing as the article is from 20 March and Time magazine, I don't think it's a joke.

Site helps you find rotten neighbors

February 22, 2008 12:51pm

@27/Hellhead
No, we asked them if they could open a window or not smoke near our bedroom wall or put a fan there or really anything that might stop it just a little. We have three air fresheners in that room and the hallway next to the wall, plus a fan going all the time, and it doesn't help. It wasn't a problem until it got cold out and the windows got shut. I understand that they couldn't stop now if they wanted to, and we don't bother them at all, just mentioned it once.

Site helps you find rotten neighbors

February 22, 2008 12:26pm

Just the other day I was wishing for a rate-your-neighbors style site, like rateyourprofessor.com.
The apartment I live in now is pretty nice and the landlords are reasonable, but the neighbors smoke all day and half the night and fill our apartment with the smell of cigarettes. All my clothes smell like I spent the night in a bar and the smell makes me sick to my stomach. When we politely asked if they could maybe smoke out a window they went on a spiel about how they're "certainly not goin' to stop smokin'".

I wish I had known before we signed a year lease.

But if people abuse other potentially useful rating sites, I can just imagine how much this could be abused. Plus there are way more neighbors in the country than professors at university x. Allowing for posts about good neighbors as well as bad would make that site a lot less negative, and more useful.

Young adult sf convention

January 19, 2008 2:12am

Sounds like a great idea for an audience that is generally neglected. (If I remember correctly) When I went to the first Harry Potter Convention in FL attendees had to be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian. It would be nice to see a F&SF convention actually targeted towards younger readers. All the younger people around here go to Otakon and other anime conventions, but maybe a nice book-oriented con would push them in the proper direction! :p

High heels: tottery killers (infographic)

I knew I'd seen this picture before!
From the comments on the blogger repost
"Ed Knittel said...

I really like the way this is illustrated. It makes it easier to understand why the heels are so bad for your body.

Disneyland themed quilt

Eric, I suppose you haven't read Cory's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom then? I think he just has a thing for Disney/the parks regardless of what the company may do.

I for one like the steampunk posts. They're often here first before they show up on the livejournal community.

Mitch O'Connell's glitter graphics

December 11, 2007 7:54pm

I have to say, there is such a difference between having a border "glitter" or the little outfit or something, and having a different "glitter" or "shimmer" effect in every other square of the entire image.
It's a bad line to cross!

Boing Boing hoodies 24% off: GAMA-GO 24 hour sale!

December 5, 2007 8:49am

I'm trying to convince somebody to get it for me for christmas, but so far it has been to no avail and I don't have enough money myself. Looks warm, too.

I like the explanation of the design. I think I might almost like the first sketch better, it seems less busy.

Anatomical knee-socks

December 5, 2007 8:23am

The other post seems to have been deleted, so I thought I'd post the comment I wanted to make until someone else made the (exact!) same comment there, but I see not here.

Sock Dreams sells a few different "anatomy themed" socks, and they do free shipping.
You can find all of them in the Halloween category (http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/socks_cat_CategoryID_110.php) for around 13$/pair but my favorite is this Skeleton Over The Knee (http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/socks_detail_ProductID_1028.php) which is only $12 :)
