$1000? That's only $60 more than we have to pay for them in Ireland!

Wubi: Install Ubuntu on Windows like installing an app

January 21, 2008 2:59pm

@PAT RACE: The only thing keeping me and many of the people I know from making the switch to something like Ubuntu is the Adobe Creative Suite. If Adobe started releasing software for Linux I think there could be a mass migration. Or at least a single migration.

Actually, if you are happy using MX Fireworks and Flash (I am not a fan of Photoshop, at least for web design...) then these run perfectly well through Wine on Linux.

I believe that Potatochips CS2 works well under the latest Wine, but as I don't have a copy I can't say for sure.

As for Wubi - looks great, but, unless you are using very modern games, high end graphics or video there is absolutely no need to use Windows.

Sorry for the drooling fan-boy response. I always think Windows and Mac are to Linux as Sun Holidays are to Ski Holidays. Some people like to laze about beside the pool and others prefer the hard work, but big payoff of a snow holiday. There is room for both, but until you try the snow, you never know!

Calculating Total Cost of Ownership on Vodaphone

January 12, 2008 8:56am

In my opinion, Vodafine are rip-off merchants.

I started out as a Vodafone customer.

My bills quickly became an astronamical 180+ Euros per month. Despite many contacts with the billing department and being moved to different tarrifs the cost per month never decreased.

I eventually swapped to another provider; the final straw was being promised a free months rent from Vodafone and not receiving it.

On the new provider, with the same phone usage as when I was on Vodafone, my bills rarely go over 70 Euro per month.

Dublin city council cancels free citywide WiFi: "Illegal under Euro law"

January 11, 2008 12:53pm

This would never have gone ahead.

We have an incumbent telcom in this country that throws its weight around regularly and as a result our broadband offerings are in the stone age.

I still cringe when I recall Bertie Ahern (our glorious leader......) standing in front of an audience of EU leaders during Ireland's stint with the EU presidency. He claimed that Ireland was the 'digital hub of Europe'. Unfortunately, broadband access was still at least a year away and we were connecting to the internet over dialup and paying by the minute for the pleasure!

It is still not possible to get a broadband connection in parts of the centre of Dublin due to patchy infrastructure. Free WiFi is a pipe-dream, we cannot even get WiFi if we pay for it!

Fake Mao antique, Shanghai "antiques" market

December 13, 2007 3:24pm

During my all too short stay in Shanghai, the only items in the market that I couldnt haggle over were anything to do with chairman mao.

That was only seven years ago - I would like to think that the man was a saint to these people; in reality Chinese communism is a mostly lip-service, they are the best merchants in the world - fair play to them!

Senario Torpedo Entertainment Projector Reviewed (Verdict: Wretched but Awful)

December 2, 2007 3:35am

Lumenlab sell a cheap and cheerful projector - its a bit noisy, and the image isn't hi-def but the size / price ratio is perfect. I'm very happy with mine.

While snarfing that link I noticed that they are now offering a 42" screen / computer - looks interesting!
