Give low-income city kids a chance to experience rural reality.

Why would it have to be designated gay? I've worked at several summer camps and the kids don't seem to segregate themselves that way (or if they've even thoroughly decided one way or the other). Plus, it's not like hooking up would really be encourage no matter what orientation. Just seems like that would cause more confusion not less.

Floating Media Drawer from West Elm

I wish IKEA would copy West Elm a little more closely sometimes, because even though I know it's seriously overpriced, I still have several of their large furniture items.

These programs seem like an especially good idea given some of the findings in immune system research and contact with farm animals (and I would think other forms of nice dirty nature as well).

Now I wonder whether regular attendees of fresh air fund events have lower rates of asthma and similar problems. Anyone looking for a thesis study?

Science of becoming Batman

I'll have to remember the term "Lancaster's law", it sounds so much classier than "Zerg rush".

What would you do if you ended up in the year 1000?

June 11, 2008 9:39am

I'll bet just about everyone here can draw a rough world map or trace it on a globe from memory.

That skill alone should be worth a fair bit of money if you're in one of the seafaring explorer towns where they kept even basic inaccurate maps under lock and key as state secrets. It's also fairly simple to explain with some pointing and gesturing.

(Yes, I've given it quite a bit of thought. No, I don't know why)

New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"

Has she considered running. We just need to scale up her lesson to the whole nation. I would vote for her.

Skenazy 2008 !

The drawings are great, but the humor is pretty much Bazooka Joe.

Why Are Projector Bulbs So Expensive?

March 17, 2008 11:31am

Just want to put in another late recommendation for the LumenLab projector - I have a eVo v.1.0 that I've been using almost every day since it came out.

It uses $ 30. HID bulbs that I have yet to replace and is (like all good things it would seem) pretty much discontinued.

I just figured I would never be able to relax and watch a movie on the projector if I was mentally picturing the hours of use ticking away at twenty cents an hour or whatever the usage cost of a high end bulb would work out to.

When it dies, I think I may just have to build my own.

Amphibian eats mother's skin

I'm not sure if we're all watching the same clip because I hear David Attenborough narrating (nothing wrong with Colin Baker mind you, but Attenborough is THE gorilla whisperer), this is a clip from the new Life in Cold Blood series. Available as a pre-order from Amazon or on P2P near you (unless you live in the UK, in which case you can watch it on-line and for free, meh.) ... Colin Baker !!??

Counter-taserism

November 9, 2007 12:54pm

They should just design Tasers to inflict a simultaneous but smaller voltage through the grip to the tasee. Then it would be tolerable if one's life is threatened but uncomfortable for overuse.

Call it the "conscience reminder" or "empathy trigger".

Electric Kettle Acid Test: Sunbeam Tea Drop, Kenwood Response Kettle

October 16, 2007 7:41am

I like having LEDs in my kettle so I got one called the Storm, it makes wavy blue light patterns on your ceiling while the water heats (that part is best enjoyed if you make your tea in the dark) but overall a good quality kettle.

EternaLight GeneRay X1 Crank Flashlight

October 2, 2007 11:55am

I think that the crank light is licenced by techass from some other factory. I have one - it's OK, works as described, but not amazing.

Their OTHER products are the real gems and worth checking out - the Rav'n, a nearly indestructible LED party light with some cool settings that lasts quite a long time on just 4 AA batteries and the ZzzFlame, an electric LED candle that slowly dims over 15 minutes or so.

I have no affiliation with them, I have just been impressed with their well-designed products.

No friends yet.
