This is not true - we are the world's #3 exporter after China and Germany. We *do* consume far beyond our means and that is certainly financed by foreign investment. In terms of earnings per capita we should be as wealthy as western Europe and living a slightly poorer lifestyle due to our poor social safety net and mediocre infrastructure choices.
