Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

Medical transcriptionist melts keyboard with fingertips
March 28, 2008 6:21am
in addition to the lotion being a culprit, the PH of sweat varies with different people depending on diet.
I constantly have to clean my Black MacBook because I leave "greasy" fingerprints on it if my hands have not been washed in the last hour.
I tried colored pillowcases once and found them bleached within a week and the collars on several of my shirts look like I had slathered my neck with bleach as a cologne.
So there may also be a chemical reaction going on here that aggravates this degradation in addition to the mechanical abuse.
Make a fireball shooter
March 21, 2008 1:57pm
I've been making these for years out of those plastic hand-held confetti poppers.
Remove the cardboard end and the confetti -dispose.
Take a full sheet of flash paper, wad it up, stuff in in the thing.
Aim it and pull the string= nice large flash ball that shoots better than the one in the video, only caveat is that it is disposable, but it worked well years ago when I handed them out at a wedding reception and did a "toast of fire". Fireballs coming up from all the tables was pretty impressive.
HOWTO Earn an artist's living in the 21st century: 1000 True Fans
March 5, 2008 7:15am
most all these comments seem to revolve around music, but this True Fan thing extends to other areas as well.
There is a guy I know who repairs old motorcycles and makes special tools that are as good or better than the original factory ones. He told me that he has a group of people that will buy the first run of 10-20 of his tools no matter what they are, or what the price, they just collect them. And the prototypes which are normally junked or recycled into other prototypes are sold for even more money to a few of those collectors.
So basically he never questions fabricating something new because he has a "base" that will pay for his dabbling no matter what.
The trunk monkey (TV ads/video)
February 24, 2008 7:10am
I would be interested in seeing how many car dealers have "co-opted" this for themselves.
I know there is a dealer in Kentucky (or was it Indiana?) that has huge billboards claiming they are "Home Of The TrunkMonkey!"

thank goodness I can still buy books without DRM and spend hours and hours photocopying them.
Photo of extension cord in swimming pool
January 7, 2008 3:00pm
oddly enough I have done this exact thing in the past (long before Mythbusters) as an experiment with experienced electricians at hand wondering what the result would be:
Scenario: Film set with basically a small pool on it for filming some small water-related things. I decide to "vacuum" the bottom with a sump pump and I walk around dragging the sump pump while holding up the cord so it does not get in the water. This is also plugged into a GFCI.
So one of the on-set electricians asks me what I am doing. I tell him. Then I ask him what he thinks would happen if I dropped the cord. He thinks I would die but says he really does not know, the GFCI *should* trip and save the day.
So I get out of the pool and decide this needs to be tested.
I take the pump, drop it in the pool (it is on). I take the end of the cord where it is plugged into the extension cord (aka: stinger) and toss that into the pool.
Nothing happens.
GFCI does not trip.
That's interesting.
Now I unplug everything, take the end of the extension cord (live) and toss it into the pool.
Nothing happens, again the GFCI does not trip. But this experiment is "consuming" power. Like if you put a resistor inline. On the theory that the "resistor" is the large pool and it is creating a large "field" that probably would not cause you any harm or discomfort unless you got pretty close to it, we try this in a smaller container of water: a 6 gallon bucket.
GFCI trips.
Now the guys in the photo appear to be using 240v ac power so I don't know much more "dangerous" this is than 120vac. So yeah they are stupid, but if the power strip took a dunk, I don't think they would get fried. But don't expect a circuit breaker to trip.
Backwards singing video with comedy reverse-film effects
December 26, 2007 8:40am
it is fairly simple these days to record your voice and then play it backwards. Back in film school (30 years ago) I did something similar with actors learning short sentences (mostly just 2 words) which they recited backwards with the proper "attacks" and "decays" of speech reversed as well (not just reciting the words backward phonetically...)
It was a little harder with a 16mm camera though, we had to mount the camera upside down because in order to reverse the film, it meant once processed we had to flip the film end to end, which made it upside down. So we had to film everything backwards AND upside down!
The film instructor stopped by while we were filming and he could not figure out why the camera was upside down and strapped to the tripod with Duck Tape.

Senator Kit Bond: Waterboarding is "like swimming"
December 13, 2007 12:16pm
Why does no one ever ask:
"How would you feel if a member of your family was captured, held hostage and waterboarded?
Would that be considered torture?
Would you be fine with that?"
Bogus "tractor beam" video
October 24, 2007 6:05pm
having done "magic" like this in the past (for a one-eyed audience with no depth perception...aka: a Film camera)
I cannot tell you exactly how it was done because I was not there, but I CAN tell you how it was probably done
First: No Magnets
Second: The camera and tripod and set pieces are all locked down.
So the pull-back at the end is there to throw you off. It does not "prove" anything.
Third: Everything you see at the end is the "set". It is not very large, it has a floor, a back wall, some other stuff on the periphery to throw you off and make you believe there is more to it, but...it is just a set piece with a floor and a back wall.
But they are on what is known as a "gimble" (think teetertotter).
Does not have to be fancy. It could just be a piece of pipe down the middle under the floor that the set piece "tilts" on.
They just went one step further than "normal". They fooled you into thinking it was just the table and chair and speaker locked down.
I have built these before in the past for TV Commercials, as long as the camera is locked down onto the set (and the tripod is definitely attached firmly to the floor...) then you can flip the thing upside down if you want, but in this case, all it takes is tilting the set slightly. The speaker will stay in place on its own with a bit of Spray Mount on the bottom for grippage.
Magnets are too much bother. And they are not as strong as you think they are. Gravity is your friend and it is cheaper.

Phone fingers keep iPhone from being smudged
October 18, 2007 8:18am
watch the video, girl uses them with an iPhone, starts to make a call, then some guy runs by and rips the iPhone away from her and runs away. The last third of the video is chasing the thief.
wtf?
yeah its a joke, why else would there be Google ads carefully blended in with the links?
iPhone hacker sues Apple for right to unlock his phone
October 11, 2007 11:04pm
a class action suit huh?
I would be interested to know how many people sign on for this...
I know a number of people that have iPhones.
Zero of them are interested in unlocking it.
and the analogy used in the link provided is really bad.
Its not like Ford forcing you to use their tires and their roads, its more like Ford voiding your warranty for modifiying the onboard computer that controls the vehicle. Hey, you should be able to rev as fast as you want, right? Who are they to put a rev limiter on there? Drop your own modded chip in there dude!
So you should sue Ford for locking you into a certain speed range.
But that would be crazy.
You deliberately mod your iPhone and expect an update from Apple to be compliant with your mod?
The website should have been:

Microsoft selling DRM-free MP3s in Zune store
October 3, 2007 7:28am
The link does not say, but they are probably the same tracks available on Amazon from Universal and EMI. Allowing the sale of DRM-free music is not the choice of MS, it is the choice of the content owners.
The reason that ITMS sells DRM tracks is because initially that was the ONLY way they could get content. Now they have convinced some content owners to allow tracks without DRM.
I believe that if Apple could sell all tracks without DRM, they would. But right now Universal is attempting to turn the tables on Apple by allowing AMAZON (and others) to sell their music DRM-free, but NOT allowing Apple. The sole purpose of that is to try and stick it to Apple. It won't work, but that is another story.
Sorry to disappoint you but this is not about MS "being nicer" than Mac.
The recording labels are freaking out because they no longer "control" the distribution of their product, Apple's iPod does.
This is their ham-handed attempt to get control back. It won't work, but its a start. I can see more labels removing their content from ITMS and allowing it to be distributed elsewhere with no DRM, but its not about "being nice". It is about control.
