Light fixtures made from old CRTs

April 22, 2008 9:07am

Lovely, but I wouldn't volunteer to sit underneath it.

Surgery of item being removed from rectum appears online

April 21, 2008 9:28am

Putting the video on LiveLeak seems inappropriate; but I can't begrudge the doctors their laughter.

Public relations-officer for Southern Illinois University College Republicans sends misogynistic hate mail and is forced to resign

April 18, 2008 7:13pm

Someone HAS to find out what his magical redacted website was. I'm so curious.

Video of dog who won't go through screenless screen door

April 9, 2008 10:18am

It's a very cute dog, but what the HELL is going on in that one frame at the start of the video? It looks like a Yeti wandering around a suburban kitchen.

Libraries and the occult

April 1, 2008 2:12pm

I wonder how this compares to books about sex.

Giant dome made from 1,000 Hula Hoops and cable-ties

April 1, 2008 9:29am

Sure is a lot of plastic. I wonder if there's a more earthy way to build one of these?

Woman told to remove nipple rings for Texas flight

March 27, 2008 7:03pm

Why'd I get disemvoweled? I was being serious. The bus driver really did yell at me this morning, and life really is cruel. I mean it.

Over 700,000 people are on terrorist watchlist, according to US gubmint

March 13, 2008 10:42am

So, wait. This would seem to suggest that an "incompetent security apparatus" is the major flaw here, and that giving up the Bill of Rights would be okay if only the DHS was good at its job.

If the security watch-lists were super-duper accurate, and only had 5 names between them, then would they be OK? How about 50 names, or 500? Is there a cutoff between "okay to hassle the following people" and "too many false positives"?

8th grade honor student suspended for buying candy from classmate

March 12, 2008 1:59pm

I don't think they're "hiding behind" it -- that suggests that they have some nefarious, unspoken anti-Skittles agenda. It sounds more like they're just standing stupidly behind it in plain sight.

Teen pranksters switch off San Francisco's electric buses

March 11, 2008 3:53pm

Interestingly, this phenomenon appears to be localized entirely within a single San Francisco neighborhood. I am completely unable to discern a reason for why this might be the case.

Rules against questioning security make us less secure

March 11, 2008 9:41am

Wasn't there a post yesterday about how "transparency is not security"?

Schneier: transparency is not security

March 10, 2008 3:40pm

What's the problem? Aren't policemen and doctors supposed to have more control? They wouldn't be terribly useful if they didn't. In these situations, the power imbalance is actually beneficial.

Food Court Musical, by Improv Everywhere

March 10, 2008 10:07am

Not to be outdone, here's a bunch of high school kids doing Rent outside of a JCPennys, which seems fantastically inappropriate:

Californians: free tax-prep, courtesy of the gubmint

And as we know, Californian government officials NEVER make accounting mistakes.

Heathrow Terminal 5 to fingerprint domestic passengers

March 8, 2008 12:53am

Here in the US, we have some strong legal-type words about "unreasonable search and seizure." Does England have something comparable?

ETech: BoingBonic Convergence

March 6, 2008 9:44pm

Are Cory and Mark different people, or is that one guy who's just been composited into the picture twice?

Censorware that blocks BB mentioned in Denver Post piece on filtered WiFi at DIA

March 5, 2008 2:01pm

I'm not following DIA's "whose child accidentally saw porn" argument -- surely there are other transportable forms of pornography, right? That's like saying, "I'm sorry, you can't bring any magazines into the airport, because a child might see porn in them."

For that matter, any REALLY experienced traveler will have their porn collection pre-loaded on their hard drive already and won't need the help of the internet, thank you very much.

Fake cold remedy Airborne settles lawsuit -- get your cash back

March 4, 2008 9:07pm

I can't speak to their medicinal properties, but Airborne tablets do wonders in alcoholic refreshments.

Books that make you dumb: chart

January 25, 2008 11:59am

That purple cluster at the "dumbest" end? Those are all the books that are classified as "African-American."

Aaaaaaawkward.

Vanishing Of The Bees documentary

January 18, 2008 9:40am

Didn't the bee population start re-stabilizing a few months ago? There was lots of news about die-offs last year; but I can't find any similar reports for this winter.

Great Wall Mural, Bank of China, Dalian China

January 17, 2008 9:49am

If we're disemvoweling Rob for insulting Cory's photo, maybe we should disemvowel Cory for insulting the bank's mural.

Net Neutrality summit: San Francisco, Jan 26

January 15, 2008 2:35pm

Smithale's explanation still sounds like they're offering a varying fee structure that is based on the user choosing whether they want to take advantage of additional features.

Does it really cost the Bulletin $100 to manufacture each customer's MCLE credit?

Net Neutrality summit: San Francisco, Jan 26

Wait a minute. The conference on net neutrality is charging different prices to different users, based on each individual's desired level of usage?

Texas evacuees subject to criminal checks

December 20, 2007 3:01pm

In my experience, "declining to be more specific about the process" equals "knowing that the process is obviously deficient."

Though catching crooks is attractive, I can't believe this could be done quickly during an emergency. It takes forever just to walk through a metal detector at an airport; imagine the delays that database-checking will introduce!

It would really suck if disaster-evacuees died while waiting in line because it was taking too long for authorities to check their criminal background.

Another person turns blue from colloidal silver

December 20, 2007 1:44pm

Combine him with the 8-limbed girl from a few months back, and you've got Kali.

Human history - the 60-second lecture

December 6, 2007 10:02am

The lectures are all wonderful -- but oh noes, they're in RealPlayer format! What on Earth? Someone needs to give a 60-second lecture on acceptable video formats.

Google says spammers are giving up

November 29, 2007 9:58am

Cory -- are you saying that you are still using the same email address that you had in 1988? That's kind of awesome. I like to think it's something like mringwald_fan@well.com.

Gold-farming empire linked to dot-com child abuse scandal

November 15, 2007 2:46pm

Man, what a crazy story. The full article is well-worth the read.

Weirdly, back in 2001, I had a run-in with a similar company -- I was living in LA, fresh out of film school, and was offered a job as a Tape Op at a company that had aspirations similar to DEN (but less money). They planned to show gay-themed movies and news, bookended by internally-produced host segments. I was to be responsible for simple stuff like hooking up cables and dubbing footage, and I smelled trouble when a boss asked me, "if any of our hosts can't come in, could you fill in for them on-camera? And would you mind taking off your shirt?" That's when I said no thanks.

That company's still around today, probably because as sketchy as they were, at least they didn't drug and rape anyone. Yay, I guess?

Truffle hunting

"If you're driving around with a pig, everyone knows what you're doing."

Chris Anderson sparks PR flak armageddon

November 9, 2007 1:35pm

I am constantly surprised by how publicly unrelatable some PR people are. If your job is to maintain relationships with other human beings, you probably ought to realize that when you say things like "this means war," you are quoting Daffy Duck.

HeavyInk.com - a mashup of Amazon.com-for-comic-books

November 8, 2007 3:32pm

The site's fantastic -- and definitely would benefit from more folks diving in and writing reviews.

I'm friends with a comic book shop owner, and initially I worried that Heavyink might make him obsolete. But even with the advantages of Heavyink (great RSS, social networks, a big library), I don't think any website can replicate the experience of having a giddy, wild-eyed comic shop manager guiding you from discovery to discovery in the nooks and crannies of a meatspace comic store. Heavyink's data-friendliness and the interactiveness of real life seem compatible, not redundant; fulfilling two different comic-booking needs.

Climate change denialists winning the race for "Best Science Blog"

November 8, 2007 9:59am

Can anybody point to an example of junk science on the Climate Audit site?

Galacticast: Sean Bonner is Wil Wheaton is Wesley Crusher

October 16, 2007 10:17am

The acting was sort of like silent-movie style, where they had to telegraph everything with mugging big gestures. Put some eyeshadow on the cast and add a swarthy sheik, and it's a Valentino film.

The mincing Wesley was good, though. A shame he was upstaged by his sweater.

Anna Rexia Halloween costume

October 8, 2007 3:19pm

Never before have I heard of Halloween imagery that is intentionally vulgar, provocative, or disturbing.

Naomi Klein on remaking people by shocking them into obediance

October 2, 2007 2:47pm

Okay -- sorry about the double-post, but I just watched the video, and I'd like to add: it is shocking. It's hard to seize on its arguments, because they come in a sensory barrage that seems designed, by a very talented director, to overwhelm the viewer.

The video ends inspirationally, "information is shock resistance. Arm yourself." If we are to resist shock, the first order of business would seem to be arming yourself in defense against this video.

So ... my question now is, is it intentionally ironic? Or accidentally?

Naomi Klein on remaking people by shocking them into obediance

October 2, 2007 2:30pm

I heard Naomi interviewed on the BBC, and I can't say she came across very credibly. When disaster strikes, are we supposed to suspend commerce until we've all regained our bearings? I simply can't understand what alternative she would advocate.

Twisted game simulates running McDonald's

October 1, 2007 1:24pm

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that the writers of Boing Boing do not have a sixth-sense-like ability to detect when a cultural artifact has been previously written about anywhere else on the internet.

I am also shocked by the premise that a business' bottom line can be benefited by taking ruthless advantage of money-saving opportunities.

SHOCKED.

HIV activist silenced for fear of surveillance

September 25, 2007 11:19am

Indeed, Mr Universe -- surely those officers could have been doing something better than trailing around after an easily-discouraged protester. For example, they could have been brushing up on their espionage training, because they were clearly pretty lousy at blending inconspicuously into the background.

HIV activist silenced for fear of surveillance

September 25, 2007 10:13am

Silenced by whom -- herself? I'm not clear on exactly what this person's afraid of. If she doesn't like getting attention, maybe it wasn't a great idea to organize a demonstration at the Republican National Convention. (Which was three years ago. Way to be topical, Newsday.)

Co-host of The View doesn't know if Earth is round or flat (video)

September 19, 2007 10:09am

SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child–

Not terribly lavishly, I would expect.

If your education never made it past the basic shape of a planet, your earning power is probably such that you're better off just keeping your legs together.

Nebraska senator sues God to stop terror threats

September 18, 2007 2:28pm

I view this as a positive thing -- the more politicians are distracted by idiotic performance art, the less time they'll have to screw things up with idiotic legislation.

NY Times on Capgras Syndrome

September 14, 2007 11:38am

It's a great article, but OH MY GOD why did the psychiatrist even broach the topic of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"?

Oliver Sacks' book is fun, but infuriating -- he didn't discover anything that wasn't previously known; and at times his rediscovering of the neurotic wheel feels a bit creepy, like he's toying with the patients.

Capitol police attack, break leg of anti-war minister (video)

September 12, 2007 3:07pm

If he wanted to slip in without causing a scene, surely I could have waited until after he was admitted to affix the "I LOVE IRAQIS" button.

Fetish DVDs for men who like women who crush model train sets

September 11, 2007 12:50pm

Judging from the scale differences, I'd guess that this particular crushing video would be linked to the even-less-common "giantess" and "macrophile" fetishes.

Water leak in overhead apartment creates beautiful bump in ceiling

September 10, 2007 5:38pm

It looks like it would be hard to resist sticking it with a pin.

Baby Unicorns in Second Life - via interspecies sex

September 7, 2007 9:56pm

Now that the comment's been obscured, I too am suddenly curious about Mark's reasons for posting about this. Are we allowed to ask why? I promise I won't say anything mean about Xeni.

Burning Man Suicide: statement from camp in which it took place

September 7, 2007 1:20pm

If only he'd known there was going to be glitter body painting, maybe he'd have changed his mind.

Cory's Guardian column explaining DRM's impossibility to non-geeks

September 4, 2007 10:40am

How many non-geeks do you expect will make it past the opening paragraphs about the physics of lightspeed travel? Or the sentence, "to understand this, you need to understand a little bit about cryptography"?
