@Albedo,
That's how they find alligators too. I lived in an apartment complex with TONS of alligators in an adjoining lake. I saw game wardens doing that at night sometimes, sans cardboard tube.

Are you kidding? I live in a tiny little town in the United States and there are several places that do very good business in fresh-baked bread of all makes and stripes.
I can't decide if you're trolling or are just ignorant of what life is really like here. I'm going to assume it's the latter. Come on by. I'll make you a "sammich" with your choice of about a zillion varieties of artisan breads.

Beating The Bounds railwalk project shut down
March 10, 2008 10:17am
When I was working for a small-town newspaper I had some unmarked, plainsclothed "security" guard for the railways stop and accost me when I took a picture of a stop sign on the line.
He cited all the usual stuff bout turr'ism and what not. At the end of the day I was on a public road and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it.
Asking him for his name, identification and some quotes to use in my story resulted in the desired result of seeing him speed quickly away.

Why it's good to leave your WiFi open
January 10, 2008 10:33am
To me, it's basic politeness. Providing internet access to guests is kind of like providing heat and electricity, or a hot cup of tea.
Agreed, but I think that my definition and your definition of who constitutes a guest differs.
Guests are people I know and have invited to share my hospitality, not a stranger who pulls up outside my house hoping to score some free web access.

UK mall bans grandparents for trying to photo their grandkids
January 3, 2008 11:27am
@Cory:
I had very nearly the exact same thing happen to me as a college student. I was in town to do some shopping and had met some friends for dinner. A security guard - probably younger than I was at the time - came and rousted us from dinner and banned us from the mall for "hanging around."
And yes, you're right, these malls depend on considerable government largesse and public good will in order to operate - and often abuse both.

Thesixtyone: Music discovery game connects indies and fans
December 10, 2007 6:24am
Apart from the reinforcement of groupthink, I think such a system is also in danger of becoming biased. Imagine that during the next two months, an unusually high number of heavy metal fans signs up. (This is unlikely, but it's not at all implausible that something of the sort happens; remember how Brazilians took over half of Orkut?) Their ratings will tend to clump together, which earns them disproportionally many points, making them more influential.

I'm really happy you like this comic - I've been reading it since it first came out (I'm only missing issues #1 and maybe a couple of others), and it's been great to see it get the attention it deserves.
Too bad about Kirkman's Wolf Man comic, though. Not too good.
