Lightbulb that's burned for 107 years

May 9, 2008 2:38pm

This post makes me feel old -- it was a viral link about three years ago.

Here's the webcam link: http://www.bunnweb.org/centennialbulb/index.htm

Wonderful DIY pipe organ

April 16, 2008 11:19am

It's kind of crummy that this "YouTube video" is actually a link to BBGadgets. I know you need the traffic, but why make me click twice? At least take the YouTube logo off the promo graphic.

HOWTO make a non-timekeeping wristwatch bauble

April 12, 2008 10:13am

One of the timepieces used in the article may be obsolete, but it's not ready for the trash. That beautiful Seiko m354 is the watch that James Bond wore in "Moonraker".

I'd rather spend 10 bucks on a battery to get that m354 running again than cover in in fluorescent spray paint. This project is just too trashy for me.

1972 Ideal "Bing Bang Boing" commercial

March 30, 2008 11:06am

Sadly, today we "protect" our kids from toys that fling metal balls through the air.

I think this video isn't a commercial, but some sort of marketing promotion video.

Jack LaLanne on the secret to happiness

March 21, 2008 3:49pm

He's (still) living proof.

Big square USB-key duplicator

March 21, 2008 8:40am

"Sovietly" -- what a great word! I'm going to start using it in my daily speech.

Clips from cult movie Rat Pfink a(nd) Boo Boo

March 11, 2008 5:50pm

My favorite movie. The first item I ever purchased off the Internet was a VHS tape of RPABB, from Sinister Cinema (this was in 1997 I think).

Heads up car nav system uses virtual cable to guide drivers

January 11, 2008 10:43am

I think that this technology is inevitable as we progress towards driverless cars. Another feature I think it needs: The line can be green if the driver is obeying the traffic laws, and morph to red if the driver is speeding, passing on the right, etc. Tied into local traffic reports, it could aid in reducing traffic congestion.

Edison electrocuted an elephant 105 years ago today

January 4, 2008 8:58am

Amazing to me is that this public spectacle happened only 105 years ago. We've come a long way both socially and technologically (and still have a long journey ahead).

Howard Rheingold's 1994 sketches for HotWired

January 1, 2008 2:08pm

Jeffrey Veen's HotWired Style: Principles For Building Smart Web Sites is still relevant ten years after its publication.

Soviet phone handset with Bluetooth

December 11, 2007 9:10am

I have never used a Soviet phone handset, but maybe these bluetooth handset mods can be more than just novelty items. The ergonomics of my 1960's Bell System telephone handset are far superior to my wireless phone.

Webby Awards: Most Influential Online Videos of All Time

November 27, 2007 9:44am

The exploding whale was another early viral video. The Quicktime file just barely fit on a Zip disk.

Fossilized scorpion was bigger than a human

November 21, 2007 9:13am

It's straight out of the infamous spider pit scene that was cut out of the original King Kong.

Deluxe masks from 1977 Johnson Smith catalog

October 12, 2007 12:53pm

As a kid, I literally went ape over Johnson Smith's mask selection -- the gorilla was my favorite, but I was also walked around as a caveman and werewolf.

For more mask goodness, here's a full-page scan of the masks offered in the 1979 Johnson Smith's catalog.
