Telephoto Compression - look at the pics that show the difference at 28, 50 and 200mm.

http://cp.c-ij.com/english/photoshooting/techniques/howtophotograph/howtophotograph08.html

Also, another good example is the jet pics in this thread
http://www.phototakers.com/forum/archive/can-someone-show-me-an-example-of-telephoto-compression-54038.htm

Or either of these 2

It looks like Kem was using a Canon 400mm f/5.6L, possibly with a tele-extender, so the shark wasn't exactly on top of them. Still, nice set of pics.

Oh, and gimp sucks

Man electrocutes pickle to demonstrate power of Christianity

July 18, 2008 4:31pm

Yea, it is "making a difference in the world". It's making that room reek of burned pickles and dill. Make no mistake, this isn't a happy smell and made me want to retch.

Don't try this at home, because it will take a whole damn week, if not longer to rid the room of the smell.

We did this in physics class and a week later, it was still so bad that we made a ozone generator and left it running overnight.

Of course, nowadays, our Precious Snowflakes would never be exposed to anything like this (or the ozone generator, which, admittedly, was kinda dangerous) in school.

Quintessential TSA stupidity: taking airline cutlery away from a pilot

just follow the posted rules Ken - like myself and everyone else.

The irony of a post like this in a thread about this subject is delicious.

When you have a traffic accident or fire in urban areas, people will actually stand in the road to snap pics of whatever gore is visible.

Yes. It's a well known fact that those ghouls knock over first responders, not satisfied until their lenses are covered with a thin sheen of blood from the last breath of the dying.

Idiot.

Olympus WS-110 digital voice recorder

Meh, sound quality on these is kind of mediocre.

Ever single Archos hard drive based player / recorder (I've had 3 over the years) I've had has _excellent_ recording quality, terrific battery life during recordings and I've never had a file get munged by one.

The built in microphones are very good.
External mics can also be plugged in (standard 3.5mm headphone jack type connector) and some even include spdif in and out.
Standard WAV file format, mounts like a USB drive, no software needed.

No DRM or any of that garbage in audio recording (I think the AV500 sees macrovision in video recordings - you can record DVDs, but not output them over)
Video recording via a tiny camera or RCA in is also supported in some (all current models?)

I've owned the Jukebox Recorder v2 (2002?), the AV500 and another one. All were in the area of $150-$250.

Mike Huckabee congratulates Canada on its "national igloo"

January 5, 2008 3:38am

Although I really have no love for Huckabee, Mercer has gotten a number of fairly high profile people to say really stupid things - Tom Vilsack (also a presidential candidate, well, for a while anyways) congratulated Canada on adopting 24 hour time

It's fun to watch (the compilation was the highest rated CBC show), but I always find myself wondering if people are actually that dumb or just screwing around. There are a few clips where the people being interviewed had huge shit eating grins.

That said, either Huckabee is an awesome straight-man, or...

BTW, Mercer got GW Bush too. Bush made a joke about the incident in one of his speeches up here, but since "the incident", all requests from the CBC for an interview have been rejected, so make up your own mind there.

How Circuit City Committed Suicide

January 5, 2008 1:37am

#61 I do not want to pay for a so called "knowledgeable salesperson". Just make sure there is some kid in a blue, red, or yellow polo shirt nearby to go get my stuff and ring me up.

I don't know if you've been tracking prices recently, because Circuit City prices haven't really been competitive recently. Mediocre, really

Unless you're using a $40 off $200 coupon that you printed off the net (or got when you moved) to buy something on clearance, there really hasn't been any compelling reasons to buy at a circuit city in the last 6 months.

You're not paying for a "knowledgeable salesperson" anymore, but you sure as hell aren't getting any sort of a refund.

Driver tasered for refusing to sign traffic ticket

November 27, 2007 10:21pm

I'm going to view this a bit differently and say this - in the long run - is a good thing.

It shows quite clearly what is an acceptable level of professionalism (or lack thereof - "hurts, doesn't it?") for the police. Furthermore, the behavior is also expected - the second police officer to arrive on the scene even says "good for you".

It also clearly shows that there are virtually no longer any guidelines for using a Taser. The police may use this (LESS lethal) device essentially at will and any use is acceptable use.

The more people that are exposed to the fact that "the police" regularly practice this kind of violence against "the people", the better. It means more people to try and push for reforms and if that doesn't work (it hasn't yet) - more people realizing that the police aren't on their side, but are actually their enemy.
With what we've seen from the police and courts lately, that might not be a bad conclusion to draw.

Gutsy ad-campaign for Buckley's vile, foul, miraculous cold-remedy

November 13, 2007 12:41am

It is great stuff, although you do eventually get sort of used to it.

Tastes horrible - the closest I can describe the taste is prison alcohol made out of pine needles, eucalyptus leaves. Drain cleaner is added so it burns when it goes down. Nasty aftertaste too.

Be warned, I've seen "Buckleys" in the States that is basically your standard sweet robitussin flavored stuff. Look under non medicinal ingredients to find "pine needle oil"

No friends yet.
