Naomi Klein on social change

April 21, 2008 6:21pm

#14 "Life is bad for a lot of people, but using SHOCK LIBERALISM by showing us images of poverty, war and ethnic violence and trying to guilt trip us because we're living better lives isn't going to help anyone."

You should be guilty. Part of the reason life is bad for many people is so ours can be better. If you start taking a wholistic view of things, you basically end up with three choices:
1. Accept the fact that we live in a decentralised Sparta and treat the Helots as such.
2. Choose against empire and push for equality.
3. Put your hands over your ears and cry 'naa naa I can't hear you".

If you believe that globalisation is an acceptable practice, then we can argue. If you refuse to admit to what is going on, there can be no discourse.

If you believe, but want to avoid having to admit, that what you support is evil, then pretending it isn't true is probably the best strategy.

Public relations-officer for Southern Illinois University College Republicans sends misogynistic hate mail and is forced to resign

"Feministing recently received some really badly written hate mail, something which is not in itself unusual."

This annoyed me a little. There is a wel known education gap between boys and girls, and it is still growing. This should be something feminists abhor, instead of parade.

It isn't just the lack of compassion, it's that the lack of compassion is on an issue that should be on the top of any gender studies work.

Sinistar meets Dick and Jane

Haineux:

That seems to be stolen from http://www.videotopia.com/errata2.htm - oddly, they credit the source of the image but steal the text.

I know this because I found it yesterday(!) when looking for GKW.

Eildath:

Full points. I saved it from 4chan when I saw it there, it's a great little work.

Obsolete skills

March 2, 2008 12:57pm

Calligraphy has always been obsolete. It was never useful, but it has always been pretty. Obsolescence does mean we have to stop.

As for adjusting rabbit ears... I know about half a dozen people who still get pay-TV. Most just use their tellies for watching DVDs, but sometimes there is something good on free-to-air, so the rabbit ears get adjusted.

If anything, pay-TV/cable is obsolete.

Project Chanology continues.

Alden, correct. But Scienos celbrate it on the 15th and it is also the Ides of March. Moar importantly, the 13th is a Thursday and people have to work.

Takuan, the reason the books are in libraries? The CoS donates them. Quite effective.
