Phone-unlocking SIM-shim

May 6, 2008 7:05pm

That's not the "grocer's apostrophe," sorry. The grocer's apostrophe is the spurious apostrophe when forming a plural:
it fits into almost all phone's on the market

Experiment: 96% of passers-by ignore famous artist's street painting

April 23, 2008 11:25am

The video says, "Hopefully, these numbers will wake people up." They mean outsiders will hopefully take a greater interest in art, but I think the results of the experiment should serve as a lesson for those in the world of high art. Sometimes, art is just art. The painting did not attract the attention of 90% of the passers-by, or or turn anyones world upside-down, as predicted.

Penny Arcade Launches "Greenhouse," Online Indie Game Store

I see a Linux version. Very good!

Vegan strippers

March 27, 2008 2:53pm

Today's New York Times looks at ways sexuality is now used by some as a marketing gimmick for veganism and animal rights.

That's funny, because my first reaction was, "Wow, veganism and animal rights being used as a marketing gimmick to sell sex."

Pointless and stupid design hybrids fill Boing Boing editors with glee.

FreeCulture NYC photo-mob to produce enormous repository of free pix of Manhattan

March 25, 2008 5:30pm

Too bad the grand prize is a product that doesn't really live up to the ideals that Wikipedia and Creative Commons are built on. The iPod doesn't support open, patent-free formats like Ogg Vorbis and Flac, and it's tied to iTunes in a way that requires third party engineers reverse-engineer their way into it.

I'm not trying to hate on the iPod. It's an okay product, but it seems like an inappropriate prize for a competition that's all about openness.

Yoko sues seeks to block trademark of "Lennon" - **UPDATE**

February 12, 2008 6:08pm

Ehh, I don't see how Ono could win this one. Unless of course, she's also going to sue all the companies, persons, and cities that are also named Lennon.

Not everyone who is named Lennon is trying to get rich off the name.

Yoko doesn't want her to change her name. She just want to undo a marketing decision that tries to profit off John's name.

Heathrow Terminal 5: Electricity-free no-laptop zone?

January 19, 2008 11:47am

I don't see why Heathrow is being singled out. Some terminals have special desks with outlets for laptops, but you'll have to rely on your battery at most terminals.

Armrests are also quite common.

Miro 1.1: faster torrenting for better net TV

Why does Miro use Xine instead of VLC in Linux?

HOWTO make open/free video

December 3, 2007 6:15pm

An almost identical flamefest occurs whenever someone posts using that wretched Matroska (sp?) "wrapper codec". Although VirtualDub has some support for it now I'm told, it's still a codec that provides no compression improvement, and even more dubious are the claims of "cross-platform support".

Matroska is a container format, not a codec. It's not supposed to compress anything.

Film review: 2 Girls One Cup

November 28, 2007 7:18pm

These two girls and their cup need a Wikipedia entry. Otherwise, I might have to watch the video.

Magicians innovate without IP law

September 12, 2007 9:47am

I read that Houdini biography Boing Boing featured a while ago, and that book made him seem like a bit of an IP troll, constantly threatening other to sue magicians for performing his "patented" illusions and such.
