If this isn't proof of Rule 34, than I just don't know what is.

Abney Park's vacuum-tube violin mod

May 5, 2008 6:02pm

If this (very cool looking) beast is part of a steampunk/goth band, I worrying over subtle resonance qualities of the form, even if it IS a completely accoustic instrument are rather beside the point.

But then, I'm no audiofile. I listen to ripped mp3s of 80's issue cd's of 70's recorded music on the earbuds that came with my ipod, so I what the hell do I know?

Neocube needs no mechanisms

April 29, 2008 12:29pm

This might be the best desk toy I've ever seen if not for the fact that I'd be terrified of screwing up my monitor/disk/misc electronic gizmo left on my desk.

Still want one.

Birth of the cup-holder, 1950

January 20, 2008 12:30pm

Oddly enough, the thing about this illustration that struck me as most incongruous or retro is a water glass. A water glass? You'd have a glass? An actual made-out-of-melted-sand GLASS in the car?

Growing up in an age where paper or styrofoam cups were simply a given, a water glass is far more of a head-scratcher than a glass bottle or suction cups.

Do Kids Still Play with Wooden Toys?

January 16, 2008 3:44pm

When my daughter was younger, we got her several sets of these:

http://www.constructiontoys.com/store/hab-mb25.php

She played with them CONSTANTLY. More, even than legos or tinkertoys, and even now, at 15, still drags them out occasionally to make elaborate, livingroom occupying structures.

I like to think it's part of the reason she's a founding member of the robotics club at school and why she's considered one of the better mechanics in the group.

Macbook Air is Real

January 15, 2008 12:06pm

I will be the first to admit that Apple's industrial design team is top notch, and this is, as is usual, sexy and pretty and makes me want to touch it, but...

$1800 for what is essentially an email/web appliance? I think they missed the mark on this one.

IMHO, the point of an ultra-portable is not performance (past a certain mark of 'usable'), but PRICE/performance/size. I would happily shell out $500 for a light, thin, but slow(er) 12" notebook that let me reasonably read my email, surf and play videoclips on the road. I might spend $1000 if it was just that cool. But, $1800 is as much money as I could spend on a machine not TOO much larger with MUCH better performance, optical drive, etc. If I'm gonna shell out that kind of scratch, it needs to be MORE than a web appliance.

I'm not sure if this is.

And yes, the integrated battery/RAM is cause for concern.

Unicorn Chaser

January 11, 2008 9:16pm

If I had to hazard a guess on how it's sticking, I'd say spirit gum.

And this marks the first time I need a unicorn chaser for the unicorn chaser.

Even the My Pretty Pony stick on tattoo doesn't make this cute.

RIP: Netscape Navigator (1994-2008)

December 28, 2007 10:56pm

I worked for NCSA from '90 through '91, writing chemistry visualization software and porting the NCSA sci-vis tools to the IBM RS6000. They were just starting up this whole 'hypertext viewer' thing. They asked me if I wanted to work on the project. I said it sounded like boring network programming, and I wanted to do cool stuff like graphics.

Oops.

I still fondly remember Netscape, and my stubbornness sticking to it even at a point when IE was a clearly faster, more stable program on my windows box, purely out of reflexive anti-MS sentiment.

I'm sure if I pulled out the box of ancient backups, I'd find a 3.5" floppy of Netscape on it.

And for the record, I remember ftp'ing Mosiac from the NCSA site for the SGI PI35. My coworker got via gopher.

God, I'm so old.

Machine Girl trailer: 1 girl, 1 arm, 1 gun, pure win.

December 10, 2007 11:02pm

This is 'Snakes on a Plane' with extra asian.

The trailer gets an 11 out of 10.

Inevitably, the movie will be a 4. But hey, enough of these over the top high-concept jams, ONE of them is bound to pay off.

I will be there when it happens.

Joss Whedon's Next Series: Dollhouse

November 1, 2007 6:23pm

Dushku's tolerability is directly proportional to the ratio of high-energy ass-kicking to talking/emoting she does. She's like a marginally more talented Jessica Alba or a marginally less talented female Keanu Reeves.

And surprise, surprise. A Joss Whedon series featuring an hot young supergirl with angst.

I only feel a *little* guilty knowing I will be automatically setting the season pass on the TiVo.

The one potential this has, as I see it, is the inherent ability within the premise to contain a good deal of independent 'non-major-arc' action, which can carry the load as little bits of info from the big picture are dished out. Think of the best years of X-Files.

Bacon candy bar

October 18, 2007 4:52pm

I've had this, along with their Black Pearl bar (wasabi, and sesame) and Woolamaroo (almonds, salt, hemp seeds).

While the *concept* of bacon + chocolate is, indeed, all that good and true in the world, in my oh-so-chocolate-snobby opinion, this bar would be better served using a darker, slightly LESS sweet chocolate. As it is, the milk chocolate isn't quite deep enough to counter the highly smoked flavor of the salt and bacon, and a bitter sweet chocolate would be just a touch less creamy, providing more of a snap, which would get along better with the VERY crunchy (and delicious) bacon pieces.

These bars can be quite pricey. I've yet to find them for less than about $7 a piece. The Black Pearl and Woolamaroo are both excellent, with the Black Pearl bearing particular mention. the flavors are really blended well, don't overpower each other, and seem to come one after the other, so it's pretty delightful.

(I have no relationship to Vosges other than as a pretty satisfied customer)

Sony Reader ePaper Upgraded, Leaked

September 12, 2007 9:03am

At SIGGRAPH '07, I saw Sony's latest version of e-paper, as well as a prototype of this reader. And, ignoring, for the moment, the horrific DRM issues, the execution and form of this device completely sold me on the concept of ebooks. Previously, I'd been apethetic at best on the whole business. But the contrast and clarity of the screens is now so good that I can finally see the appeal of being able to carry around a large percentage of one's library in a device not much bigger or heavier than a mass market paperback.

The fact that these screens work off reflected light, rather than transmitted light, mean there's no need to deal with clunky backlighting solutions. A small, low power LED in the side of the disply is activated ONLY when the environment is DARK. this drastically reduces both eyestrain AND device power consumption.

The tech is already being incorporated into cell phone displays, and they were showing off an early color version (not the greatest fidelity or intensity yet) and a thin, flexible version, capable of being rolled around a spool.

Mark my words, in 5 years time, the next iPod will be a stick with a pullout wide screen that rolls back into its finger-sized casing when you tuck it away.

No friends yet.
