Paramount silencing portions of Indiana Jones in theaters?

May 29, 2008 8:44am

I saw it in Nairobi last weekend and can report the same repeated, 5-10 second sound outages at different points during the screening. I've seen plenty of other movies in the same venue, and at least two in the same actual theater, and haven't experienced any sound problems before. This is a relatively new theater with high-end equipment (by Kenyan standards, anyway).

Tibet and the China Olympics: calling out the sponsors

April 25, 2008 11:12pm

Is there an established group pushing for autonomy in Tibet, and negotiations to that end with China, while bypassing the old Tibetan religious government?

I know that the Dalai Lama does not suggest that the end goal of his negotiations is to return to power himself.

But are there alternatives to the Dalai Lama and his mediators leading the negotiations? Are other, secular groups prepared to step up and participate in talks at this stage? What happens if the Dalai Lama were to die?

One Laptop Per Child machines for sale this Christmas: buy two, one goes to developing world

If it were structured as a donation, as a U.S. taxpayer, you could only claim a tax deduction on the difference between the amount of your donation and the value of the two laptops received in return.

So, if the laptops are worth $188 each (or whatever the latest figure is), and your "donation" is $399, then your tax deduction eligibility would be only $23.

I have no idea how this would carry over to international donations, but I would imagine that most countries would have somewhat comparable rules.
