International ferry terrorism search called off: they were just tourists

Everyone knows that the biggest threat to ferries are irresponsible ferry captains:

I think I love you. I'd ask you to marry me, but you're probably a 5-year-old girl or a 50-year-old pedophile. Maybe both. It's Schrodinger's Internet!
Camera shop offers customer bribe to remove bad Amazon review
May 5, 2008 2:41pm
I agree with the commenter on dethroner that this negative feedback ransom thing has got to stop. I've seen too many "If you give us negative feedback we'll give you negative feedback" things on eBay that just turn me off to the whole online marketplace/auction thing.
Maybe all feedback should be hidden until both sides have submitted?
Young adult sections in bookstore -- a parallel universe of little-regarded awesomeness
May 1, 2008 11:51am
Ah, I've been waiting for Cory to finally fess up to his YA obsession!
I just finished reading the Uglies Trilogy (well, not Extras yet, I'll wait for paperback) and I'm surprised no one has mentioned InterWorld by Michael Reaves and Neil Gaiman.
(I'd also recommend the Alex Unlimited series, which has a similar premise.)

New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"
April 11, 2008 2:33pm
I don't know what city all her critics are living in, but as a New York commuter, I see 9-year-olds on the subway all the time.

Steven Brust's unauthorized Firefly fanfic novel
February 18, 2008 11:30am
For those who don't have the backstory, Pocket Books was supposed to be publishing Firefly novels and Brust was one of the authors they approached. The deal fell through because Joss was too busy to vet them like he wanted. Brust decided to just write the novel anyway, since as Cory said, it was in his head.

Starbucks at Guantanamo Bay?
February 12, 2008 5:26pm
The Nex is the Navy Exchange Service. Every military installation has something similar (NEX or AAFES).
Same with the McDonald's, the Pizza Hut, and the gift shop, though the Starbucks is new to me.
Nextwave Agents of Hate: merciless attack on underwear pervert comics
January 29, 2008 6:08pm
I agree, "underwear perverts" is getting old.
I also agree that neither Warren nor Stuart are really all that bitter about superhero comics, this is just a place to blow off some steam. I highly recommend Thunderbolts, BTW, it's a great superhero book, and a great look at the Marvel Universe gone bad.

Young adult sf convention
January 19, 2008 12:51pm
Anyone who's actually been to an anime con recently knows that those are where a lot of the younger sci-fi/fantasy fans are ending up - and the cons are being changed as a result. The cons aren't just about anime anymore, but they do manga, and music, and fashion, and modeling, and novels and so forth - it won't be long before someone gets the bright idea to focus a convention around sci-fi/fantasy, bringing us full-circle.

When the hell did they launch? I thought I'd look over all their posts, and uh, so far I've hit November with no end/beginning in sight.
I know it's crazy to try and look at everything, but if they just launched, it should have been easy, right?

I read this book last week, and honestly, I didn't see Pavlovich as a monster. He's really just another guy mixed up in the same mess as all the rest.

Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go
November 10, 2007 10:55am
Okay, reading the comic now, and it points out there were no typists to slow down. So okay, my previous point? Not really so valid anymore.
Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go
November 10, 2007 10:47am
I thought the point of QWERTY was to slow typists down, as the old typewriters would jam if they typed too fast.
...and uh, Wikipedia is backing me up on that.
Of course, this is not an effective argument for why we continue to use QWERTY, it's just explains how we got here in the first place.
