$31 million worth of lost valuables on the TSA's watch
March 1, 2008 11:21am
First - locks are allowed. I use them all the time. Yes I had to get new TSA approved ones but that just means they have a master key to open them. Easy deterence to theft by opportunity. Second - long before the TSA was around I knew never to pack valuables in my checked luggage. Anyone who does is a fool.

Bad info-graphic: Ikea shopping hours chart
September 24, 2007 7:52pm
I had no problem quickly grasping the information they were trying to get across - which was NOT what hours they are open but rather when it's really busy. In fact what took me the most time was trying to figure out what folks would have a problem with. And for those who suggested writing out the information in English that wouldn't help non-English speakers a bit. And as far as the clock face being a bit different, so what, what counts in this graphic is the colors and they correspond to traffic lights. Quite simple and almost elegant solution to getting their point across IMHO

my question is why do we care what a talk show host thinks about the shape of the world? or rather why do the media (boing boing included) want to try to make us care? Seems to me it's more of the magician's trick to distract us from what's really in need of our attention.

for anyone else who'd interested here's a quote from the 60 minutes piece.
"the city required respirators and posted signs at the site, safety reports show only half of the workers wore them."
with this is mind who should be responsible? Government for not strictly enforcing the use of respirators or the individuals for not using their own common sense in protecting their own live while trying to save others?

Does anyone have any information about how many of these workers that are now seriously ill were or were not wearing the recommended respirators? Or about the availability of respirators at the time? I'm also looking for information about how the need for respirators was disseminated during the rescue and recovery. All of this would provide a better picture of responsibility.
