Wearable air bag
March 24, 2008 2:29pm
Neck air bags have been around for years, but full jacket airbags are a recent thing.
The first documented instance of full jacket airbags being used in a real accident occured just recently:

I have a friend who rides professionally who thinks they're a bad idea. He claims your body will roll much more, and that as a result your extremeties (especially your head and neck) will be exposed to much more trauma.
London cops declare war on photography
March 5, 2008 8:41am
Any real brit can stand up and correct me for the following, but:
I had the impression that the British have a sense of resolve, in part due to WW2, that basically says the country will survive most anything. After the subway bombings, the response seemed to be "meh, you'll have to do better than that." Which to me sounded a very healthy attitude to take towards terrorism.
And I wonder if it's exactly this attitude that frightens the cops across the pond into thinking they're lording over a bunch of dumb sheep.
Bicycle "handcuffs" for flexible bike-locking

The answer to bike theft is to only own bikes not worth stealing.
Shrine to bragging, deadly Internet "mall ninja"
February 29, 2008 1:19pm
Wow, I frequent gun message boards (as a casual shooter who's left-of-center and doesn't think the 2nd amendment is the ONLY political issue in the world) but wasn't aware this was what the "mall ninja" epithet referred to.
The funny part about the I.E. page is that I can't get the shrine of the mall ninja to load right on my copy of FF.
Man creates online shrine for favorite cookie fortune
February 27, 2008 10:05pm
OH MAN a girl I once dated got this, only in a different form: "maybe one day you live on moon!"
It's not a fortune: it's a hope, and not one she necessarily shared. Suffice to say, she was very pissed.

@ Sorcerer Monkey:
Why Mr. Frees' voice was so familiar was driving me nuts, until IMDB revealed that it's the same voice as the ghost host in Disneyworld's haunted mansion!!!
That would have driven me nuts for weeks!

Ruhlman Defends the Percolator
February 7, 2008 9:29am
I can believe Ruhlman. Crappy decaf tends to be flavorless and percolators are known for destroying decent coffee in a wash of bitterness. Put the two together and you probably have something that comes close to pleasant. My brother does the same thing with my grandfather's percolator and it makes something drinkable, but by no means great. I recall putting coffee I ground at the supermarket into my old percolator though and despising the results.
I still far prefer my french press. Mmm good.

50 Years of LEGO: Nine Sets I Have Known and Loved
January 28, 2008 11:03am
I remember being somewhat mollified when a girlfriend bought me a ninja Lego set my first year of college. I wanted it, but had nothing to do with it after it was built nor a place to display it (in the cramped confines of a dormroom shared with a international student who played basketball).
I've tried to channel the fascination I had as a child many times and failed, yet you echoed many of my fascinations ("Hinges! Tubes!") in such a way that is making me really wish I had access to a set right now.
A moving tribute, truly.
Tickler brand ukulele T-shirt

Somewhere in the world there must be a discussion of the use of footwear in nude portraiture, both erotic and non-erotic.
Thinking entirely off the cuff, in pornography it seems to serve three purposes (in declining order of importance):
1. keeping the performer's feet clean as they go around the set (utilitarian)
2. titillation of the audience (practical, in the sense they serve to further the purpose of the work)
3. creation of an air of spontaneity on behalf of the performers (subtle practicality)
Again these are just my guesses and directors/photographers probably could give far better insight.
But in art? What purpose does it serve here? How are Amy's goals met not only by the use of shoes but of decorative ankle ribbons? The ribbons were what inspired me to write this. They do not appear to have been left on after disrobing, quite the opposite: the ribbons are the sole nod to typical clothing. She has not picked up the ukulele after growing tired midway through playing dress up, she IS dressed up.
There are likely also connotations involved in artistic nudes that gingerly hide the most sexual parts that I am not qualified to discuss and make any comparisons to erotic nudes that much more difficult. Regardless, it is a fascinating picture, as are nearly all of Amy's works.
The Macbook Air is Not a Sub-Notebook
January 16, 2008 12:09pm
I work in a non-creative field where horsepower is not necessary for my day-to-day work, and as such my relatively new imac is typically what I use for messing around while I use my tibook for getting work done.
Tibook has been on it's last legs for years now and I was looking forward to Apple introducing a replacement for it. Something lighter that wouldn't bust my back if I wanted to take it on a bike with me, and something with all the trackpad magic they've introduced lately.
The MBA is sexy as hell and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want one. That said, I don't think I can justify the cost of it. I don't need something this slick to type up a document, as much as I'd like to think I do.
Orlando's Family Auto Mart infomercial
January 9, 2008 3:11pm
Oh Family Man, and the adventures of Family Boy.
I once had a girlfriend who hailed from Titusville (one of many tiny spacecoast towns) with whom I sat with after the ball dropped New Years Eve and watched Family Auto Mart informercials for hours.
I'm pretty sure he does a cartwheel every time he sells a car. I want to buy one from him for just this reason.
Oh noes! BB comments temporarily broken. UPDATE: fixx0red.

Condo ass. claims copyright on Chicago's Marina City Towers
November 9, 2007 2:15pm
I think this is the first time I've ever heard a condo association referred to in a good light.
I always thought they were thought of as being harpish nightmares that were made up of people with nothing better to do than make other's lives miserable, which (coincidentally) seems to be the end run of what they're trying to do here.
Counter-taserism

Dangit someone beat me to mentioning a Faraday Cage!
But they didn't mention that it'd also prevent cell phone radiation from causing you cancer or making you sterile or whatever claim you want to believe this week!
Twist 'n Shot Jello Shot Glasses
November 8, 2007 12:27pm
The very fact that these are re-usable sells it for me; clawing the shots out of the bottom of a dentist-sized dixie cup was what always killed it for me.
Also: I imagine much livelier party games with rows of little jello obelisks on baking sheets and hands held behind backs.

First, kudos for the Moonshiner quote above.
Second: Myth #4 could use tweaking, or at least expanding. I've heard before that sometimes people misinterpret thirst as hunger. I know I do this occasionally, and drinking a glass of water before I eat usually helps me keep my portion size reasonable.
Either way, a can of diet soda, with all the sodium and unpronounceable chemicals, CAN'T be equated with water for any kind of benefit. That's just foolhardy.
