Restaurant lays off waitress who shaved head for cancer charity

June 7, 2008 1:50am

As a good friend (a young girl) had to get chemo, a whole circle of friends(mostly guys though) all shaved their heads so she didn't have to be the only one with a bald head.

Sometimes this made people think they were skinheads or even nazis. Sometimes this provoked an embarrassing situation when those same people found out the reason for the group's baldness.

It really opened some eyes.

if you like GB, maybe you might like the Dead Brothers (international outfit based in Switzerland), too:

http://thedeadbrothers.com/

Aparently they have (sort of) disbanded and are pursuing different solo-projects - they have about four albums out though, with some amazing music. If you clickon "Movies" you can watch a video for their song "Trust in me".

(I am not affiliated with them, but I saw them live and really enjoyed them!)

New Arbitrary TSA requirement: all electronics out of your bag (cables, too)

February 1, 2008 6:52am

I flew out of BOS (to Europa) on Jan 3rd and a TSA boy was yelling at the line over and over: "take all electronic devices that are bigger than your hand out of your bags". along with some other things that made me and the lady from New York laugh a concealed laugh for fear of being arrested over ridiculing an Agent of the TSA...

So I put my portable audio recorder into a bin, set it to record the whole spiel and let it wander through the x-ray machine...

Some of the TSA-slam-poetry the boy was still letting loose on the crowd was actually recorded...

Icelandic "shopping terrorist" menace thwarted at JFK

While stories like this one severely worry me about the deterioration of freedom and justice in the USA, I do think we need more background on most of them.

I recently traveled to the US, coming from an EU country, this was on the I-94 Visa Waiver program. I was photographed and fingerprinted (bot index fingers) like all I-94 visitors.

There was an old "departure record" (that part of the I-94 that you absolutely have to return when you leave the country after your stay (which is 90 days maximum)) still stapled into my passport. I pointed this out to the customs officer who wasn't very wordy, but professionally polite to me. He asked me a few questions about the airline, the port of entry of that other trip, etc, made some notes on that departure record, stamped my passport and wished me a good day...

This is to say that obviously not everyone is treated like a criminal who is entering the US with something to explain about their passport. And this makes me think that we don't know the whole story about many of these spectacular cases, where people are handcuffed, interrogated and deported.

On the other hand I am not saying these people deserve it. It's just hard to tell from where I am watching...
