Thank you for using good color contrasts, Mark. The last one I have been using practically let the text blend into the white page... But I sure loved those starscapes
Kids scare each other by impersonating online pedophiles

"However, the language used on the social networking sites such as Bebo and MSN is at times childish."
So, what they are saying is that these investigators have never actually spent any time online, and somehow think that adults wouldn't use childish language online, and so it must be kids. They don't yet realize that 80% of the net populace uses the same childish shorthand and lousy spelling/grammar...
Ghost resort in Disney World
April 24, 2008 12:36pm
It makes me sad that we have so many homeless that could live there comfortably, and yet there it sits behind razorwire. It's not like Disney will EVER finish this project...
Strange foods from Edible.com

I got a BUNCH of these for Xmas this year, and I can't rate them highly enough. The Scorpion Extract Soap is a great shampoo and body wash, and I'm looking forward to trying my Salvia Divinorum Sucker as soon as I line up someone to "spot" me. ;) Haven't had the Croc Curry (as pictured) or the Scorpion Vodka yet...
It was a great joke that evolved opening these on Xmas morning, because everything in the scary black wrap from "Santa" turned out to be more frightening than the last thing. We all had a great time with mugging the terror as we opened each.

"the safety factor is .... unsafe"
Wow, sums up the police perspective well. I wonder if they'd get hassled if it has been just a polished aluminium car-shaped frame around essentially a four-person tandem bike. Which might have merit either way as we move into a fuel-free society...

@115: "I was shocked at someone wanting to touch a black person's hair because they wanted to know if it felt like wool. I thought we were beyond that."
Not even close, though many "typical white people" would be appalled to even insinuate that we're still a largely racist country. And people are giving Obama grief simply because he pointed it out...
One day we might all get along and look past skin color, and gender assignment, and sexual orientation. I don't know how many more lives it'll be before I see that day, though.
Japanese ads downplay URLs, encourage searches
March 25, 2008 12:22pm
This has been my line of thinking for some time now... I don't know when it morphed.
But instead of trying to remember if it was "papajohns.com" or "papa-johns.com" or "papajohnspizza.com" when I try to order a pizza, the ease of just typing "papa john pizza" into the address bar of Firefox (default search: Google) and having it just pop up the right site it a fundamental shift from 10 years ago. 9 in 10 times, as long as you use enough words, you don't have to deal with a list of Google results -- it just ushers you straight to the link you're looking for.

re: #1 0 WTf! On the one hand, Xeni is so gorgeous I can't imagine anyone mistaking her for trans. On the other hand, Calpernia is also a stunning lady. So I'm with Xeni in her response, what's wrong with being trans?

New Yorker on the 1950s comic book panic
March 24, 2008 3:25pm
Thank you for this... I'm currently listening to the kickass podcast novel Brave Men Run, which is in a world that essentially only has two differences from our own that I've seen: 1) comic books were banned in the 50s because of these historical hearings, and 2) they have superpowered beings (the Sovereign) that are just coming to light, and that no one knows what to expect because, well, the comic books were banned. Awesome stuff.

Just check out the link that #4 posted... it's in common use among veterinarians (but maybe should be among other vets, too.)
I wonder if it would work on bone okay...
Tibet: nearly 1,000 jailed in Lhasa, Dalai Lama offers to resign

@23, I would also suggest that buying anything stamped "Made in the USA" at WalMart is an almost guarantee that you're buying something made in China...
Tibet: nearly 1,000 jailed in Lhasa, Dalai Lama offers to resign
March 18, 2008 10:14am
I feel the world leaders (those who give a damn) must boycott the Olympics in China. If China wants to appear civilized, they have GOT to STOP this, and if they won't, we're not allowed to come play at their house.
I'm sure the US will still go, though, because our government really doesn't care that much (in fact, they may be paying special attention to see what works and what doesn't.) So every individual American needs to stand up and vote with their voices and their dollars: if McD and Nike act as though nothing happened, then don't buy their product and tell them why, with emails and even complaints to store managers.

Digital Buddhist Jukebox Plays Tibetan Chants

The old ones weren't as pretty, either. =1 I predict these will become the newest fashion trend on Rodeo Drive now, and all the classiest celebrities will carry them at Sundance this week,
Music producers mixing for MP3
December 29, 2007 9:30am
I consider myself an aficianado, though I'd never call myself an audiophile because most of the time, those people are idiots. ;)
But who the hell uses 128 bit encoding anymore, other than 8 year olds? When I rip a new CD for digital use, I still use mp3 but go with a high bitrate -- 192 for years, though recently I've started going up to 256 after seeing how nice Amazon's files sounded. (Yes, I still buy from them, Cory... they're the lesser evil than iTunes or the rest. ;)
And always always use standard stereo rather than joint, and always a static rate, not variable.

Televangelist says: "A vote for Romney is a vote for Satan"
November 6, 2007 12:38pm
I hope you're being sarcastic, Pyros, but sadly I don't think you are. I was always taught God was Love before I rejected Krisjianity, but the vision you have of Him is hatefilled and unforgiving.
For the record, I like Christ -- he was a good buddha and had a great message. I just wish his followers could remember what that message was.
Spiral-cut fried whole potato: Korean junk-food
September 28, 2007 9:52am
These have been pretty common at fairs and carnivals in the States for many years now - glad to see the Koreans are enjoying them now. And trust me, they are deeee-licious. Much less greasy than french fries in my experience. The last one I had was simply salted and sprayed with a little vinegar from a spray bottle. z0mg it was good
Indonesian "hobbits" seem to be separate species
September 21, 2007 2:15pm
Anangbhai, you just about choked me with laughter when I read that...
What I find interesting is that the original title of the MSNBC piece on 9/20 was "Scientists Confirm ‘Hobbit’ Species Was Human" and they have now edited it. New Scientist was much more clear with "'Hobbit' wrist bones suggest a distinct species"
Like I said on Digg last night, how can there be such a huge disconnect between American science/media and the rest of the world?

TRON Sequel Given Green, Pulsing Light
September 11, 2007 2:33pm
The year it came out, it was all I could play for a long time. It was decent length, but I was so sad when I reached the end. I can't wait for 2.5 -- and now the movie!
Apple iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, iPod Nano, Classic, and Touch Announced
September 5, 2007 1:36pm
I'm a huge apple fanboy going way back, and I live/love my 1st gen nano as I lived/loved my 1st gen shuffle. But I gotta say, I hate these things they released today. They lost the grace and elegance and went with "the fat one", a "classic" uglier than the 1st gen ipod, and the fingerprint collector...
And to add insult to injury, they no longer sell the 2nd gen nano in the apple store. I have been longing for a PRODUCT [red] 8 gig for some time, but thought I should see the next great thing from apple before I bought it. Now I can only get it on ebay... Thanks alot, Steve, for ruining my day.
I am hating the new nano's fat little heart so hard!
Science Fiction Writers of America abuses the DMCA

I have to agree with some of the other posts: sounds like a class-action counter-suit against SFWA would be an excellent move. I'm sure there are some lawyer-friends-of-Boing-Boing reading this that would be happy to take the case... a la Eastern Standard Tribe. =1
Welcome to the new Boing Boing!

Nope, not bull. I read about this guy a month ago (kinda late to the show, Joel ;)
It's on the up and up, from all the other medical articles I read after that. I have to say, I'm more than a little intrigued, and would love to talk my boss into running some experiments with this stuff. (I work on the periphery of medical research.)
