Is the iPhone the Next Wii?

March 9, 2008 1:49pm

On the point about the SDK costing $99. Its free if you want to develop and just use the mac based simulator. It costs $99 if you want to actually run the application on your iPhone. I know that means you end up paying $99 anyway, but the point is that you can try out the SDK for free... though I am thinking of paying the $99 because that gives me the 2.0 beta on my iPhone (bragging rights, silly eh?). There is a good post on Personafile http://www.personafile.com/products about what the final version of 2.0 will offer, namely hardware support for a 3g iphone, now that will be cool!

iPhone - the roach motel business model

February 21, 2008 10:01pm

This is totally true of the iPhone, but why is such a bad thing? After all it is a consumer choice whether you should check into this motel in the first place.

Disconcerting: The Sharper Image Is Kaput

February 21, 2008 9:43pm

Man I hated this place. I hope it really goes away, not just re-organizes into some other version of an air purifier.

Everex CloudBook First Impressions Not Good

February 17, 2008 9:39pm

I think the EEE is a better product. Not too thrilled with the overall sub-notebook market... not until Apple jumps in... can you imagine a Macbook Air sub-notebook?

Ruhlman Defends the Percolator

Being a coffee snob, I would say this: there is no such thing as good brewed coffee. Pressed only.

Deals: Zune 8GB for $180 at Toys 'R' Us

February 1, 2008 11:20am

Zune = UPS, iPod = FedEx. I guess they both get the job done, but I gotta say FedEx is a bit more sexy! If for one, can't see how anyone can buy anything but an iPod Touch or iPhone. I love my iPhone! Use it as iPod all the time!

Nuviphone: Garmin Announces First Credible iPhone Competitor

January 31, 2008 9:29pm

I think on the surface iPhone contenders can look promising. Though here's the thing, the iPhone has a lot going for it that does often enter these simplistic comparisons. For starters, there is a rarely a mention of the software experience, which is what makes the iPhone special. Nor does anyone mention that its a best iPod on the market, video and music, well connected to content via iTunes. This is a big deal. These types of things matter in the end, customers seem to have figured this out with the obvious win for Apple with the iPhone. I for one am looking forward to the next big iPhone thing, the expandable universe of iPhone apps that will come on the heels of the SDK release in Feb.

Pocket Scale Masquerades as iPhone

January 25, 2008 7:03pm

I don't get this product at all. What the heck does the iPhone have to do with this scale. Is this a non-clever clever way of jumping on iPhone's success. Though a mini-scale is a cool thing to have to measure the various weight reductions in coming Apple products, someday the shuffle with not be visible (though I think SNL already played this up).

Canon Rebel XSi: Great New Entry Level DSLR

January 25, 2008 4:16am

I am curious why the previous poster says that a non-eyepiece viewfinder can also make candid shots easier to grab. My experience with any SLR is that its too big physically to hope for a good candid shot and the only hope is to make the camera part of your being so the audience simply gets used to it. Either way its hard for some old timers to get used to a LCD viewfinder model. Overall I think the Rebel 450D is a nice improvement and represents further refinement of the Canon line. I am pretty impressed by their cameras overall.

Quotable: Levy on the Macbook Air

January 25, 2008 3:58am

If writing is about catching a reader's attention then the circumcision reference is perfect. But then again he could have gone further and made us truly sick to our stomachs.

The ">MacBook Air is impossibly thin. And that's both a thing of beauty and practicality. I think Apple hit the right note with the MBA.
