Google News from a better world

Not to pee on anyone's happy parade, but I would prefer to dream about things that are 1.) actually objectively beneficial, and 2.) objectively realistic.

ConAgra converts to organic co-op???
the headline that you'll see the next day is

"Food prices skyrocket! Millions left hungry due to lower food yields"

Emissions free line-up??
Um, how is this even conceivable within the next 8 years?

Card companies retroactively cap at 8%??
Bad for eveyone! Not only will people without perfect credit never get another credit card, but forgiving Billions in debt retroactively and not allowing the companies to make it back guarantees they will be out of business in days.

And also I agree with you Maurik, that may not be the best idea for universal HC.

So I guess I take it back...consider your happy parade peed upon.

Electro-sensitive people want to ban WiFI

May 27, 2008 4:16pm

yeah and a lady in New York says that genetically engineered crops can read her thoughts...

...why is this even news??

TED 2008: Irwin Redlener on surviving a suitcase nuke

February 28, 2008 10:24pm

finally! I knew college would come in handy for something!
As most of the people on here have figured out, nuclear terror isn't all that it is cracked up to be...
read my brief, yet informative, scholarly paper on this very subject here

Seriously, how did this guy get a TED talk...if he got one then I want one!

Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"

February 25, 2008 7:13pm

There is no gray area on this issue...how can there be?

Bars and restaurants are privately owned establishments and can be patronized by whomever they want.

If someone has a problem with an establishment, they can deal with it or avoid it...whether the problem be smoking, food, music, whatever.

I don't see how Papa Government has any right to stipulate what goes on between a public with free will and a private establishment.

(p.s. I am a non-smoker who works in a bar BTW)

Fluxx -- Nomic card game

January 29, 2008 8:24pm

I have to agree with Yehuda, Tonamel, and Shrinkwrap on this one... 1000 Blank white cards does appear to be a much more fun and superior game.(Check out the wikipedia entry here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_blank_white_cards)

Why would I spend any money on a game like this when I could spend virtually no money (a dollar or two for a pack of index cards)and create a personalized game of "1000 BWC" that is most likely way more fun?

Seriously, I think the post should be about 1000 BWC instead.

Books that make you dumb: chart

January 25, 2008 2:29pm

I just think it is hilarious that....

1.) people take this simple little statistical intrigue so seriously. Lighten up people, geez.

2.) people comment here impulsively without taking a moment to actually read the site. Many of the comments up above are easily answered if you just took a moment to click through a few links and trouble your mind with a few half paragraphs instead of straining your wrist in a mad dash for the "Post Comment" button.

Harvard Coop calls cops on students who wrote down textbook ISBNs

September 22, 2007 2:22pm

I don't understand how they were allowed to stay in the store after the police were called...It is a private business and it seems to me like if the owner wanted them removed, I don't see how they could argue with that. Can't the owner of a private business on private property decide who he/she wants to have in their store?
not looking for an argument, just and explanation.

p.s. don't get me wrong, it is a ridiculous argument to claim that the store owns the rights to the ISBN...

No friends yet.
