Coupon queen spends $10/week on family groceries

May 16, 2008 1:07pm

Well, it comes not too far behind the posting of Michael Pollan's google talk.. and they're not totally at odds with each other, but like people have noted, there aren't usually a lot of coupons to be found for the "edges" of the grocery store.

Instant Action, the YouTube of 3D Gaming, coming to OS X soon

oh, nevermind, I looked it up - the engine does support linux..

Instant Action, the YouTube of 3D Gaming, coming to OS X soon

The dynamix game I'm still waiting for a redo on is Deathtrack. That game was awesome.

It's good to hear of gaming coming to mac desktops as well - I know my mac owning friends would love to play portal.. Does the engine support linux too?

Bicycles, all you need to know

May 12, 2008 1:53pm

All of the discussion of backpacks and messenger bags is totally the wrong direction.. buy a rack and some panniers if you want to carry stuff around.. or even a big ugly basket.. anything but wearing the bag. It puts all of the weight up too high and it's sweaty and uncomfortable.

Teen in skimpy dress denied prom entrance

May 12, 2008 11:40am

They were just trying to protect her from a room full of teenage boys who, hopped up on GTA, would have paid her for sex then run her over to get their money back... (and get points!)

Wireless Opera earbuds don't get tangled or pulled

April 30, 2008 1:57pm

I have two half broken pairs of shure e2cs.. On the first pair, the plastic casing broke apart, probably from hitting the ground - on the other, the wire got brittle and cracked open where they bent around my ears.

between the two, I have enough parts that I just need to give some soldering a shot.. but it sure would be nice of a $100 pair of headphones would last for more than a year.

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is out

April 24, 2008 2:00pm

For the past two releases I've upgraded to the beta before the initial comes out.. by the time they get out of the rc's and into the beta, things are fairly stable. (or at least, they have been for me.. but I usually only do one or two computers out of my 4)

I started playing with ubuntu while trying to put together a "media" computer sometime in 2005, and I've steadily gotten more and more happy with it.

I have a windows computer that is pretty much a Steam terminal.. and I update my ipod with my fiancees windows laptop. Ubuntu just doesn't work for me for either of those tasks.

Along with my ubuntu computer at work, I have an 800mhz g4 imac - it's a cute little box, and I could see being an osx user someday.... except that I love having somebody else manage software packages and hate having to manually run installers and do all of that fiddly clicking.

With ubuntu all of my software stays up to date, and "it just works*" ..

(* except of course when it doesn't, and you spend 6 hours editing your xorg.conf to try and get two monitors to work)

Comcast disconnects Dave Winer

April 18, 2008 11:59am

Oh, I know it's the always on, but it's amazing that the average person pays $60 a month to have always on web & email access. It's not much for the money.

...on the other hand, I suspect that 2GB number is at least a year or two old, and that it's going up fast.

Fixing the "Text entered was wrong" bug

April 18, 2008 10:05am

I had to fix something like this - a handy trick is to just change the name of the cookie, that way you'll stop looking for (and accepting) the bad cookies.

Comcast disconnects Dave Winer

April 17, 2008 11:35am

After reading the blog posts, and comments there and at consumerist, and then the Comcast AUP, I realized that the most amazing part is that the majority of comcast's customers are paying $60/month for only 2GB of data.

If one believed that 450GB person is taking advantage of comcast, wouldn't it also follow that the 2GB people are getting royally screwed?

RIM and Its Blackberries Going Strong

April 3, 2008 9:53am

When I looked, the blackberry added $30 to my monthly bill and the iphone added $20, so I figured that meant the iphone could be $240 more expensive and they were still the same price over the next two years.

It just strikes me as obvious that boingboing readers comment on the content of articles. When the advertiser is discussed in the content of the article, then the advertiser will get discussed in the comments.

I think for technology-ish people to say "I'm using widget X for this" without saying "and I this is what I think about it.." feels odd, so that's probably part of the reaction too.

Siemens Touch Sensitive Stovetops

It doesn't really match Donald Norman's observation about bad stove top design though - the controls still don't really map very well to where the burners are.

Kevin Kelly's True Films book, now a free ad-supported PDF

January 4, 2008 1:33pm

Yeah - I don't know if I could get ads on my ubuntu machine if I tried.

Even when I used windows, I had to ditch adobe's PDF reader because it was so buggy.

I almost feel kind of guilty that I'm reading it without the ads.

So yeah, don't use adobe's software to read adobe's format, and then you're good to go.

Greenpeace Takes Electronics Companies to Task, But Are They Fair?

November 28, 2007 3:47pm

fine. I'll answer my own question.

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-2.htm

The wii uses an order of magnitude less power than it's direct competitors. 18 watts vs 180 & 190.

The report says they score 0 across all criteria.

Power consumption isn't part of the criteria for how green an *electronic device* is?

come on. that's embarassing.

Roomba, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

November 7, 2007 1:19pm

oops, I think I linked to the wrong rubbermaid stuff

(I started looking around to find what I actually have)

My bad-ass mop is a rubbermaid quickconnect wet/dry with the matching yellow handle and a microfiber mop surface that velcros on.

plus it's fun to go to the janitor supply store.

mine was very very clean. go figure.

Roomba, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

November 7, 2007 1:09pm

commercial dust mops are worth a cool tool blog post of their own:

link [rubbermaid commercial]

They feel really solid, like a professional tool, and are actually kind of fun to play with.

I actually also use a cannister vac to clean dust bunnies off of it - but that's only cuz I'm allergic to dust and doing it by hand would make me suffer.

Am I the only person who thinks this is exceptionally cool?

Call up your local rotorooter and ask them how much it'll cost to come out and stick a crappy black and white camera into your sewer pipe and record it on to a damn video tape.

it's like $200. seriously.

Burqinis and the new Muslim chic

September 20, 2007 4:49pm

Honestly, I can't read it.

My brain will not map "pprssn" into "oppression", especially without the explanation that vowells have been removed. (Since I figured it was a variant of l33t sp33k, I would have translated that a "person")

Howabout giving the text a black background?

if we select it, we'll see what it says (without Vanna White's help), and unlike white on white, we'll actually know that something is there.

Burqinis and the new Muslim chic

September 20, 2007 4:06pm

I disagree about drawing atttention - until this thread, I've always thought the no-vowell posts were spam that hadn't been deleted yet or some kind of text messaging shorthand, and I've never made any effort to read them because they're so badly obfuscated.

Burqinis and the new Muslim chic

September 20, 2007 1:47pm

@Teresa,

Your explanation of why you zapped Tim's comment was far more insightful than the zapping.

Personally, I appreciated his statement after he reposted it and I could actually read it, I thought it had a lot of validity - and I think your criticism of it makes a lot of sense too.

I think it's a shame that if he hadn't been so insistent, I wouldn't have gotten the benefit of either thought.

I can see why you're frustrated by that point of view, but I think boingboing is better if the point is presented and rebutted rather than defaced.

Belkin TuneScan FM Transmitter for iPod

September 19, 2007 10:53am

Rather than pay $40 for an FM transmitter I paid ~115 to just get a new stereo with a line-in jack, and that included installation.

Actually, I should say, *after* paying $20 or $30 for an FM transmitter I got the new stereo, because it was awful.. like all of them.

New iPods reengineered to block synching with Linux

September 14, 2007 4:52pm

My ipod photo has been dead for a while, I've been waiting on the mythical touchscreen hard drive ipod, or maybe a cheap enough iphone.. but as an ubuntu user, it sounds like I should start looking elsewhere.

(honestly, even if it gets circumvented, why buy from a company that so clearly doesn't want me to be a customer)

So, what's a good replacement? something that's ubuntu friendly and capable of navigating an 8hr audiobook that's a single mp3 file.

Apple iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, iPod Nano, Classic, and Touch Announced

September 5, 2007 11:42am

I don't get why you have to pay extra to play a song you own just because it's triggered by a ring event. The price drop is great, but I still can't accept that they're borrowing that bit of awful usability from the cell phone world.
