Jesus Made Me Puke: Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right

It seems like apropos time to recommend reading The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins. It's not just the people like Fortenberry who worry me. It's the everyday person who believes in the supernatural that is just as worrisome.
Whedon fans vow to save Dollhouse from cancellation -- eight months before initial airdate

Hm, it looks more like a well produced adolescent fantasy than anything else. The trailer had enough cleavage to make hearing the words nearly impossible. Then again, I never thought Firefly was anything more than simply amusing either, although it did have very humorous moments.
RFID tags in your luggage
May 22, 2008 10:34pm
Yeah, I hate the possibilities of abuse of RFID as well, but there's one potentially terrific use for these tags that I haven't seen mentioned and that is the idea of having paired tags. One goes on your suitcase and the other is in the baggage claim tag. After you collect your bag(s) you stroll through the exit, which has an RFID scanner. If the scanner detects a tag coded as baggage but does not also detect the matching claim tag an alarm goes off and an airport employee steps in to see who might be trying to steal your bag.
Yes, there would be problems, such as when people lose their claim tags. A bigger problem would be that a thief could just rip the tag off the bag before heading out, but at first thought this seems like a neat use for the tech.
HOWTO keep your laptop's data out of customs' hands
May 15, 2008 9:48pm
If you're a Mac user you can always use Disk Utility to create an unobtrusively named new blank disk image that is encrypted with AES. Very secure (use a good password), very easy to mount and use. Once you create it, double click it, enter your password then use it as though it was an attached hard drive. I'm sure there is something equally effective for the PC.

Ah, thank you ALUXETERNA (#5) and similar. It's nice to feel a little less alone in the world.

Re: JOHNM's solution (post #7)
Tried that. I don't know how many times I called parking enforcement on that truck. So don't worry everybody, the cops probably aren't going to enforce the new taco truck rules either.

I know I'm going to be going against the grain on this one, but I have zero sympathy for the taco trucks based on personal experience.
A taco truck where I used to work would park in the red zone right at the entrance to our little parking lot making it impossible to see around the thing when trying to pull out. On top of that the customers would park their cars right in our driveway entrance, sometimes blocking it off entirely. Then there was the garbage that the customers would leave in our planters and on the sidewalk. The walkway got to be so disgusting with ground-in greasy food that it would have to be steam cleaned. No, the taco truck did not do the steam cleaning.
If the owners of these trucks want to be more responsible, then fine. Otherwise, I have no incentive to speak up for them.
The 10th Anniversary Final SubGenius Devival

You know how some things just won't work? Like trying to receive FM on an AM radio, for instance. That's what it's like for me and this sub genius thing. Which is a pity, because the pictures are amusing.

The really interesting part to me is how this company got the amazing "news" coverage that is shown on their home page.
Why would a guy as rich as Borislow put together a company that has a web site that makes it look like the Ronco of the internet age?

"...anyone who behaves badly and doesn’t hold to moral values."
Ha! Hypocrisy always makes for such bitter humor. I guess murder and running prostitution rings counts as moral behavior.
Clouds that look like UFOs

While those clouds indicate some hefty winds aloft not all pilots avoid them. Glider pilots use them to soar to terrific heights by staying in the updraft part of the wave.
