Camera shop offers customer bribe to remove bad Amazon review

May 5, 2008 3:24pm

@#10 I agree whole heartedly that negative for negative thing on eBay ratings is unbelievably obnoxious. I've had it pulled on me a few times by bad sellers and have left negative feedback anyway. I figure that by kowtowing to those sorts of people just adds to the bad rep that eBay is starting to pick up. I still like the idea of eBay but use it very little because of these sorts of problems.

New Dungeons and Dragons license less sleazy than I believed?

May 3, 2008 12:48pm

I think people are a little to quick to rush to panic on this one. The OGL isn't going anywhere, several companies have openly said they are sticking with 3.5 regardless of 4E. I think people need to take a breath and just see how this pans out. The hird party publishers have pretty much declared their intentions one way or another at this point.

Serial killers answer letters from guy pretending to be a 10-year-old

April 28, 2008 1:43pm

The surreal factor was amped pretty high here. The Nightstalker had personalized stationary in prision? The Manson stuff was as crazy as I expected though.

Sleazy proposed new Dungeons and Dragons license seeks to poison open gaming systems

April 24, 2008 2:49pm

I'm not sure of the impact of this any way. There are a lot of companies that are using such heavilly modified versions of the OGL as to be hardly identifiable as D20. A few companies have said flat out they aren't going to 4E (Paizo for example, one of WOTC's former staunch supporters). I think people have already picked their sides, I'd be surprised if there was a single lawsuit.

DMZ Friendly Fire: reinventing war comics, making them better and more important

April 14, 2008 2:30pm

I just read this and issue 48 of The Walking dead back to back today. #48 left me speechless, but DMZ was every bit as powerful for entirely different reasons. It was comics like this that brought me back into the fold of collecting after a very long hiatus. I'm eagerly looking forward to the 5th DMZ graphic novel.

Merlin Mann's tips for getting unstuck

Good old Merlin, helpful advice while also being funny.

Penn and Teller make thousands of bees appear out of "nothing"

P&T aren't human beings. There are made of compressed ambulatory awesomeness.

Good Comment: Mott, on child abduction and trafficking in Guatemala

March 27, 2008 8:12pm

Spoon does bring up a good point; why would they try and sedate the child and not the woman? Once they had the baby they could do whatever they want (which is pretty terrible thing to have to think about really). So why this baby narcotizing mist spray?

Can we just focus on the actual horror of what is going on instead of anecdotal evidence from whomever? The facts say enough without a story fictious or not propping them up.

Cory and Randall "XKCD" Munroe at 3PiCon in Springfield, MA, Aug 22-24

Well, maybe we should heed our robot masters. I don't see what is wrong with that.

Boing Boing tv - Technology and the Iraq War: Noah Shachtman at ETech.

March 18, 2008 10:41pm

Wow, there sure is a lot of 'hey look at me, hey look at me' in Xeni's videos. It distracts a bit from the ideas she is trying to get at.

Amazing Randi's podcast

February 25, 2008 6:23pm

#13 - Bing!

Randi appointed people that would back his own ideas to the JREF. That isn't science, it is skewing a process to advance your opinions. Science is and should be open minded (but not empty headed). Science should never say absolutely "no" to anything, as theories evolve and change and are discovered. That is the problem with dogmatists, there is no change or growth.

Amazing Randi's podcast

February 24, 2008 7:43pm

The people that were entertained by his performances....oh wait, when was the last time Randi did a little magic show?

How much of the money from the JREF is going to pay his rent I wonder? My disingenuous monitor just went off.

Amazing Randi's podcast

February 24, 2008 7:27pm

I'm a skeptic and die hard athiest and ALWAYS disliked Randi. I thought the million dollar claim was more about his self-promotion and the advancement of his opinions then persuing any sort of science. Unsuprising considering that James Randi isn't a scientist. I don't think the Randi challenge was a metric for anything what so ever with the sole exception of making James Randi look like he was advocating his ideas.

Sheesh Cory, what is your obsession with shelving?

My desk. Let me show u it. (Kotaku)

January 13, 2008 2:34pm

What I liked is you could completely spot the grognards by how utterly unstaged their photos were. They looked like actual worked in spaces. Then you had the collections of sterile photos that looked like something for a press shoot to show stock holders.

Why it's good to leave your WiFi open

January 10, 2008 2:03pm

I've got my wifi locked down. Mostly because I do a lot of P2P and I don't care to share my bandwith. Sure I could set up rules to limit that but when giving other people free net access = work for me, sorry but they are out of luck. I'll give to charity or get my good karma points in some other fashion. Espescially when there are tons of places in my hometown that offer free net access.

If that makes me a jerk in some people's eyes fine. But on the flip side I'm one of the few people I know that holds the door for others so, go figure.

Warren Ellis's angry, profane Three Laws of Robotics

January 5, 2008 11:51pm

I don't hate Warren. I went out and bought and read 'Fell' like a good lil' fan boy. I get annoyed with him though, his word isn't law. It wouldn't pass for law on a rainey tuesday. Stop treating it as if it was.

Warren is a bearded english dude that writes stories. You know, the ones you could write if you weren't praising or hating him on the inter web. Show us something new.

By the way, I could totally kick Warren Ellis ass.

BBtv: Introducing BBtv vlogs! Today, Joel from BB Gadgets.

December 23, 2007 1:50am

There is this weird sort of self inflating narcissim that is going on with BBtv and now this one. You know, when you guys were just writing posts and blogging using ASCII and images it was ok. You went multi-media and something sort of smug creeped in.

Loose the smug, embrace the joy of weirdness like you used to.

And this is coming from someone who bought the paper version, been following boingboing for ever.

Stack of intriguing books from Feral House and Process Media

December 13, 2007 3:27pm

Big Dead Place is fantastic. I followed the website and really fell in love with the tales of high weirdness in an absolute froze wasteland. If the book is like the site I can't reccomend it enough.

Find it, read it, laugh.

Anyone else noticing there are a lot of people going wild with tasers these days? Unless there is a current media hunt for taser misuse stories going on.

Amnesty's Unsubscribe Me video reenacts CIA stress-position torture

November 22, 2007 11:17pm

I think discussing the ideas of trollish posters feeds them. The best response is silence, they hopefully can't represent the majority. I would argue a refrain from talk about obviously dumb and combative posts. You won't change their ideas and just waste your valuable time posting. Spend your time, I would suggest, actively fighting the things you find offensive, like torture, in a more viable arena.

Like helping Amnesty or speaking with your votes.

Amnesty's Unsubscribe Me video reenacts CIA stress-position torture

November 22, 2007 3:24pm

Regardless of how you feel about torture, the war, etc. you've got to admit that is a pretty disturbing film.

Walking Dead 7: The Calm Before -- compelling, pitiless zombie comic

November 21, 2007 5:12pm

I can't sing the praises of this comic highly enough. Walking Dead, DMZ and Fall of Cthulhu are the only comics I really follow any more. I miss the artist they had on the earlier issues of WD but otherwise I have absolutely nothing but love for it. This is a must-read for any comic book or horror fans out there.

Yamanote Halloween train party

October 29, 2007 3:54pm

Kyle doth write:

"5) Hey, what else ya gonna do when you're a Nova "teacher" and your whole company goes down without telling you and you haven't been paid for 2 months and you don't have enough money to buy a ticket home and there are no other job openings for someone with no actual qualifications and you're stuck in Tokyo without a job?"

That sounds like a complete nightmare, is that something you dealt with? That kind of weird/unpleasant sort of experience needs to be documented thuroughly.

Yamanote Halloween train party

October 29, 2007 2:33pm

Nelson.C: I was talking about celebrating the holiday, not the drunken jackassery that resulted there from.

Teresa: I dig the christian connections of Haloween, but if could also be argued that it, like many holidays had older more pagan roots. Blah, blah I don't want to beat that dead horse any more then that but I do understand where you are coming from.

Yamanote Halloween train party

October 29, 2007 1:02pm

I'm on the fence on this one. While I am not a big fan of public drunken jackassery, espescially where other countries' bad opinions of the english speaking world are confirmed, I can understand how you can feel alienated abroad and want some echoes of home...like Halloween.

Plus, since when was Halloween a christian holiday?

Funny gift boxes from The Onion

Bill Watterson reviews the new Charles Schulz bio

October 15, 2007 6:46pm

I don't want to go back to no comments. Just remember to speak to the peice they are commenting upon and not yapping about things from past posts or chasing some vendetta.

boingboing readers are smarter, faster and better then that. It is in their DNA and will not forgive them for transgress. It coils inside of them like a snake in their cells, and will destroy them if they are not wary. Stupid dissolves from within.

Bill Watterson reviews the new Charles Schulz bio

October 15, 2007 5:06pm

Hmmm...I may need to buy that book. Now if only someone could get the reclusive Watterson to talk about himself and C&H that would be interesting reading.

Oh, and the Cory bashing, discussion thread crapping yotz is annoying. You are better then that, behave!

IT Crowd Season 2, Episode 3: Great anti-piracy PSA sendup

September 9, 2007 2:34pm

As a person that finds those anti-piracy ads on DVDs unbelievably annoying I was in tears laughing at the parody, espescially the stealing it back bit at the end. I also liked the german cannibal's rendition of the IT Crowd theme song on cello at the end during the credits. I love this show.

Nepal's gadget-loving, 10 year old living goddess: Interview

September 3, 2007 6:45pm

Well, she can say whatever she wants but she better not think about re-incarnating to the north no matter what! Living goddess or no, China won't stand for it.

Have they set up some sort of no-reincarnation barrier?

DMZ Public Works: New collection of moving, thrilling graphic novel

September 1, 2007 3:57pm

*sigh*

I hate it when people who's opinions register to me reccomend things. It always costs me money. I just ordered vol 1 and 2 of DMZ.

Stop making me spend money boingboing!

(In other comics yotz, I am really, really enjoying boom studio's Fall of Cthulhu, fun reading for the Lovecraft fans out there)
