As someone who works with hog farmers, I would suggest that this is more than a little misleading. Due to a number of circumstances outside their control, primarily a weak American dollar versus a strong Canadian dollar, high feed prices due to American ethanol legislation, the proposed COOL legislations, and provincial government legislation that is in opposition to the government's own studies on sustainability, hog farmers here are losing about $50 per animal. The people I work with are not huge corporate farmers, but small businessmen and women. Like any business, they can only lose money for so long before they have to shut down.
