A quick and dirty Japanese humor tutorial

August 28, 2008 3:09pm

It should also be emphasized that the contestants are excusively drawn from the present pantheon of "tarento" celebs.

Unlike American game shows, the common man plays no part. The people earning the fabulous cash prizes are those that already have tons (although some, but by no means all, contribute their earnings to charity).

These tarento are EVERYWHERE. Every show, no matter what the subject or kind or genre, seems to have a panel of tarento, either participating, commenting on, or even just offering a facial-expression-reaction inset in the corner of the screen. The inset, I assume, is to help audiences figure out what the proper response should be when watching TV, since Japanese people are so passive and incapable of making independent decisions that even TV watching is a challenge.

Wild monkey loose in Japanese subway eludes police

August 21, 2008 7:05pm

"As for the screaming it's hard to believe that people would react that way to a little monkey."

Haven't spent much time here, have you?

I can tell you from personal experience -- Japanese high school girls will collapse into screaming fits because a bee has entered the classroom, and then once we've got it out, concentration on the school task is totally lost.

It doesn't take much to induce mass group reaction here, especially women.

Wild monkey loose in Japanese subway eludes police

August 21, 2008 5:02am

Saw some highlights on TV here in Tokyo.

The problem was stupid fucking women screaming like children, freaking out the already terrified monkey every time it made a move. Waves of massive, synchronized screaming. Or at least that was my impression.

It must have been some pet or something. There are no monkeys anywhere near here.

Beijing: Five US activists detained after lighting up "Free Tibet" LED Throwies banner near Olympics site

"I seem to recall a little place in cuba that good ol amerika sends malcontents to, and we arrest people here for the most spurious of reasons on an minute by minute basis."

Yup. And if America does it, well, that justifies everyone else, too, doesn't it?

HOWTO Make a Viking spoon

Yes, but what did they use to make the spoon knife?

Apparently they're not available in we local hardware store, and I doubt Vikings had Djärv.com

Elderly woman prohibited from photographing empty swimming pool "to prevent paedophilia"

July 25, 2008 5:53am

But come on, now, folks! What was she doing photographing that kiddie pool in the first place?

And that's a mighty fine camera for such a geezer.

This stinks of suspicious activity!

Two-headed Bearded Dragon

July 24, 2008 4:04pm

A two-headed bearded dragon is impressive, true, but a two-headed bearded clam, now, that's what I want to see!

These guys are nocturnal.

It's an imperfect solution, those eyes. But evolution has to work with what it's got, and sometimes a better solution, like the reflective eyes of cats, just doesn't become available.

It's like the panda's "thumb", which is an inflexible bone spur. It's things like these that reveal the contingency-based nature of evolution, and that also reveal the unlikelihood of special creation.

Cop busts guy for taking his pic: "It's illegal to take a picture of a law enforcement officer... if you don't give it to me, you're going to jail"

July 18, 2008 3:13am

To those of you complaining about the grammar:

If he could write above junior high school level, wouldn't he have a better range of job options? Wouldn't cop be kind of low on his list then?

Just sayin'.

We Are The World remade by impersonators on Japanese pop show (video)

May 24, 2008 4:19pm

The reason Asian people are impersonating black people in the clip is the same reason Asian people are impersonating white people (Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, etc.): in Asia almost everyone is Asian!! They don't have the racial diversity pool to draw upon for impersonation like Americans do!

Isn't this the most obvious thing in the world?

Anti-teen noise-weapon comes to the USA

I'm 37 and I can hear these things.

People use stuff like this to keep cats away in Japan (where I live). They're fucking everywhere. Supposedly only cats can hear them, but they really hurt my ears. It's piercing.

Dyslexia in alphabetical languages "evaporates" when learning Chinese for some people

And, interestingly, in the title of this very post the word "dyslexia" is misspelled.

Video of "Japanese Only" signs in Japan

April 7, 2008 3:18pm

I've been in Japan for a bit over a year now, and I have yet to see a sign like this. I have yet to be barred from entering any place I wanted to enter.

It looks like some of these are at rather seedy places to begin with, and you wouldn't want to go in anyway.

Not to defend Japanese racism. The honest truth is that Japanese people do harbor all kinds of subtle prejudices. Japanese people know in an abstract way that "racism=bad", but they wouldn't know racism if it bit them on the ass. They certainly wouldn't recognize their own racism.
