Ontario bakery succeeds with honor payment system

May 7, 2008 9:44am

I'm sure the reason this works and an honor system candy box at work doesn't isn't because of some difference between Canadians and Americans, it's because people are stealing from the candy box when no one else is in the room.

Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking. Peer pressure is a GREAT incitement to honesty.

I think there is an interesting parallel in the old maxim that phone companies could be equally profitable with flat rate billing because of the cost of operating a complex usage based billing system.

Are you addicted to blazing-fast internet?

April 22, 2008 3:41am

I'd argue that high bandwidth/low latency is MUCH more important to the the percentage of the time I WASTE on the internet than the time that I'm productive on the internet.

Reading and writing text is pretty productive and as low bandwidth as it gets.

Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?

April 15, 2008 6:56pm

FWIW - it's not blue walls, it's sky blue porch ceilings (very common down south) and it's only supposed to prevent wasps, dirt dobbers and hornets from building nests because it looks like they are not protected from open sky and nest destroying rain.

We did it a few years ago when we repainted toe porch just for the traditional look and have had noticeably fewer wasp nests (spiders don't care a bit, may even have more since they aren't competing with wasps).

Anti-emo pogroms rage throughout Mexico

Cutters are funny, but mikesum's news report is funnier, even if I am 42. It was right up there with a woman at a party telling me all about the teen jelly bracelet sex code (OMIGOD!).

Sweet Black Jesus I Have Unboxed a Heineken BeerTender

March 5, 2008 9:51am

FWIW - I'm not a heineken fan, but I've found the beer in the heineken mini-kegs to be WAY above average for available in the US lager.

But $300? You can buy a retail pony kegerator for under $400 and a full 1/2 keg kegerator for a bit over $500 and get whatever beer you want.

Argon-filled airless factories of 1959 and the space-suited workers who toiled there

That's exactly how Soviet alpha-class submarines were built. Their titanium pressure hulls were built in inert-gas filled dry docks by welders wearing re-purposed diver's helmets.

Krups BeerTender Bringing Nasty Draught Heineken to U.S. Kitchens

January 9, 2008 7:18am

Oh come on, Heiny isn't THAT bad, but $300? That would pay for a kegerator kit (http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/kits/skk.shtml) and a couple kegs of GOOD beer.

Why I'm Not at CES

Jeebus, next you'll be telling us that the 30 or so posts that most gadget blogs had about the Zune before they ever put their hands on the damned thing weren't useful EITHER.

Recycline Razors Made from Yogurt Cups

November 29, 2007 8:49am

I'm feeling a lot of cognitive dissonance over a disposable product made from 100% recycled plastic.

Wouldn't it be preferable to NOT buy disposable razors to begin with?

I Want Sandy - perfect productivity email bot is free and public

November 14, 2007 2:36pm

I spent two weeks during beta trying to get sandy to work. Every reminder message I sent bounced and the dozen + emails I sent to the support addresses suggested by sandy went unanswered.

Sandy owes me about 4 hours of wasted time that I don't think I'm ever getting back.

Roomba, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

November 7, 2007 6:11pm

roombas are gadgets, not tools.

My Dyson canister vac is a tool - I could likely beat a roomba into bits small enough to suck up inside of 2 minutes.

As for dog hair - if you've got hardwood floors a big-ass gym-floor cleaning style dustmop takes less than 60 seconds a room EASY.

Automated copyright bots won't work

November 2, 2007 6:10am

It's always been obvious that automated copyright protection only works in a guilty until proven innocent model.

The only question is whether big media companies will ultimately succeed in lobbying for legislation of guilty until proven innocent models. So far they're winning.

Why Comcast's BitTorrent-fux0r is bad for quality of service

October 22, 2007 2:15pm

Not only are they likely guilty of false advertising, but under US criminal code,
TITLE 18. CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART I--CRIMES
CHAPTER 47--FRAUD AND FALSE STATEMENTS

Whoever --
5)(A)(i) knowingly causes the transmission of a program, information, code, or command, and as a result of such conduct, intentionally causes damage without authorization, to a protected computer;

(ii) intentionally accesses a protected computer without authorization, and as a result of such conduct, recklessly causes damage; or

(iii) intentionally accesses a protected computer without authorization, and as a result of such conduct, causes damage; and

(B) by conduct described in clause (i), (ii), or (iii) of subparagraph (A), caused (or, in the case of an attempted offense, would, if completed, have caused)--

(i) loss to 1 or more persons during any 1-year period (and, for purposes of an investigation, prosecution, or other proceeding brought by the United States only, loss resulting from a related course of conduct affecting 1 or more other protected computers) aggregating at least $5,000 in value;

I'm not a lawyer, but that kind of looks like if if WoW, or any other business entity incurred more than $5000 in increased hosting costs for non-bittorrent distribution of stuff Comcast is breaking federal fraud statutes.

Anti-DRM cards to stick in your Netflix envelopes from Defective By Design

October 16, 2007 3:11pm

While I'd prefer something that isn't stuck in windows media player and would work on a linux media server in my living room - there isn't anything remotely like netflix service elsewhere and I've found it remarkably easy to use (though I'd like to be able to pick a quality level and have it cache enough movie to display at my chosen level).

FWIW - I will never buy a blueray or HD-DVD player or movie because of the DRM issues, but there is a HUGE difference between DRM as a condition of instant on rental and OWNERSHIP.

Ass-kicking water-cooled steampunk PC

September 24, 2007 2:12pm

That's much too nice to be ruined with the use of crappy PLYWOOD with a bad stain job.

Should be using birch plywood stained to look like mahogany, preferably with dovetail joints and more preferably some nice cherry veneer.

If it's a money/time thing, think about faux leather or black painted/varnished fabric, common turn of the century materials.

Furutech DFV-1 LP Vinyl Album Flattener

September 21, 2007 8:35am

Get get two pieces of glass that are bigger than an album. Sandwich the vinyl in-between. Put it out in the sun for an hour or so (depending on how hot it is), bring it back inside and allow the record to cool while still pressed by the glass.

DoJ slams net neutrality, says all packets not created equal

I think we ALREADY paid for the costly network expansions with the $200Billion taxpayer subsidy that was SUPPOSED to pay for fiber to the home.
