Meet the beetle
March 10, 2008 9:56am
Sometimes you bide your time, waiting for the right moment to post your beetle photo!
Here's mine, and I would love to have some entomologist identify it for me, it was a beautiful licorice loaf of bread painted by a velvet artist.

Bicycle "handcuffs" for flexible bike-locking
March 3, 2008 8:33pm
I bought the original version of this lock 3+ years ago after my 2nd bike was stolen. So far so good, but, like others above, I watch my bike, always. I ride BART to Pleasanton, where the jail is, and every now and then I get to ride home with a car full of guys just let out and on their way home. They find this lock very impressive!
American Cyclery uses the street cuff to lock their bikes outside during the day, but they won't vouch for the lock...

And also...
For lean ups and quick runs into the store, this lock is the best!

Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends on Google Video
February 2, 2008 4:43pm
These are great shows! I remember another time someone got really mad at Louis: It was in the episode where he tried demolition derby. He worked with two owners of a junk yard to build a car. They got him in a tournament and he qualified for the finals - and he chickened out! The first round had apparently scared the crap out of him. The two junk yard partners looked like they were going to kill him with their bare hands. Pretty funny stuff.
Price of rare goods skyrockets while infinite digital goods crash

I remember Philip K Dick covered this in "Man in the High Castle" (and probably elsewhere) - do you want to own the gun that shot Lincoln? They're making them in China!
War on the Unexpected -- Schneier's dynamite essay on the War on Terror
November 1, 2007 9:33am
Just for illustration:
Yesterday's morning news included a breathless report on an "attempted kidnapping" of a 16 year old girl. A man in a car asked the girl to get in, she refused and he drove off.
Terrifying.
Peach wasps devouring their namesake fruit

So does anyone know what a peach wasp tastes like? Seems like it might taste pretty yummy... they are what they eat.
