Crocs consider pointing to be very rude.

Indeed. Instead sweep your remaining hand in the direction you wish to indicate.

I just want to note that anyone who considers themselves a fan of mine is welcome to always send me milk. I love milk. Whole only, please!

Unfortunately Amazon no longer stocks the famous Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 Gallon, 128 fl oz. Is there an acceptable substitute?

Science Fiction Writers of America election is a referendum on copyright craziness

February 25, 2008 5:31am

Besides, one hardly has to be a big time writer to understand the industry and to work effectively within that industry to address the most important issues. It's not rocket science.

Is it more difficult to become a professional writer than a rocket scientist? There's certainly more competition for the writing job.

Teen-repellent ultrasonic device violates kids' rights

Assuming I'm free to play some sort of music at my store at some volume, who is to say that music can't be designed to drive a certain customer out the door?

Indeed, and classical music has been used for that very purpose, to drive away young people.

Delhi getting 45km of monorail lines by 2010

Building nearly fifty kilometres of elevated train line though a built-up area in only two years sounds extremely ambitious.

The horrors of plant-animal hybridization

I'm OK with plant-animal hybrids, as long as no one tries to make me into a plant.

Pistol ring and other unusual guns

January 26, 2008 8:18pm

>> how about a pistol pistol?

> Gun that shoots knives that shoot guns?

No, a pistol pistol is a pistol that shoots pistols. A recursive pistol is a pistol that shoots pistols that shoots pistols ... (These tend to be quite large, and are not available to the general public.)

A hand canon is one that can not be heard clapping, but nevertheless harmonizes with itself under transformation.

Books that make you dumb: chart

German Bavarian gov't caught buying malware to intercept Skype calls

UK girls held in NYC orphanage after mother gets ill

January 24, 2008 6:13pm

I suspect that with the mom incapacitated (she was travelling alone?), the hospital didn't know what to do with the kids, and did the default thing: call Children's Services, or whatever it's called. And Children's Services ran their default intake script, which is pretty hardcore because most kids who come into their care are from messed-up families.

Here's a poser: what should the hospital have done?

Rotting textbook warehouse in Detroit

January 19, 2008 10:49am

It is a bit puzzling to see so many books left to rot. I suspect what happened is that the fire and subsequent fire-fighting efforts damaged much of the stock, and the school board declared the warehouse a total loss and collected their insurance payout. I would not be surprised if efforts to collect usable material from the wreckage could put their total-loss claim in jeopardy, and they therefore left it all in place.

Unless the operator is really thorough, using a torch to clear a walkway of snow turns the snow-cover into an ice-cover. Not an improvement.

Microwave beam designed to fry electrical system of cars

December 3, 2007 3:06pm

I agree this device could cause serious problems if misused by cops. But in cases where it should be used, it replaces a high-speed pursuit, which has its own costs, risks, and dangers -- and substantially greater ones, I might add.

US gov't to British court: We can kidnap Brits, it's legal

December 2, 2007 12:18pm

Wil@26: Well, much of the rest of the Anglosphere has something called Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition which is supposed to keep the government (i.e. the "administration") from attempting various shenanigans. Perhaps we should get one of those.

(Though we might want to change that name.)

US gov't to British court: We can kidnap Brits, it's legal

December 2, 2007 5:59am

A kidnapping committed in Britain does not violate U.S. law, because the jurisdiction of U.S. law does not extend to Britain. Since U.S. courts are Constitutionally limited in jurisdiction to cases involving U.S. law, that a crime was committed under British law in Britain isn't an issue the U.S. court has the authority to address.

OK, but it clearly did violate British law, and kidnapping isn't one of those slap-on-the-wrist offences. I presume there's a fairly broad extradition treaty between the US and UK. What would happen if the UK gov't filed charges, and formally sought extradition?

I'm reminded of all the good press Israel got when it abducted one of its citizens from Italy.

Also, payback's a mofo, yo. If it's OK for us to do it, we can't really object to them doing too. Let's watch the Chinese grab some expatriate dissidents, or the Saudis chase down some errant wives. Good entertainment for all!
