Is driving better than cycling?

May 14, 2008 12:05pm

A large part of the inefficiency of cars is the inefficiency of combustion engines, which only convert like 15-20% of potential energy. Fuel cells are considerably more efficient, converting closer to 80%. Biking should still come out well ahead, but the margin will be narrowed.

"On the bike, I get at least 53 miles per burrito."

And you probably give back more gas than you consume.

Bicyclists on LA freeways

"A motorcycle has the best attributes of both a bicycle and a car."

Yes, but also the worst of both (relative danger of two-wheel bicycle, carbon emissions of cars).

I can't see how McNuggets (TM) would be any worse made with lab meat.

As far as the energy-saving argument, it's interesting but I'm not too sure that it wouldn't take as much (or perhaps vastly more) energy to "grow" meat for the meat-eating world than it does to raise the animals.

I'd also be interested in the initial market for it, considering the outcry (especially in Europe?) against genetically modified crops. This takes that principle to a whole other level.

What's funny is that if you're from Kyrgyzstan and your message gets disemvoweled, it'll look pretty much the same.

Jack Chick, animated: "Somebody Goofed," by Syd and Rodney

The animated video is analogous to the paper tracts in that both obviously elicit strong reaction, as they're intended to.

Before I became a Christian (not due to any Chick tracts), I was a pothead and occasional tripper. I can imagine someone dropping acid and this scaring the @)#(*&% out of them....
