Alleged CD-bootlegger abandoned in solitary jail cell, left to drink own urine
March 12, 2008 1:11pm
What are they thinking having a prison cell with no toilet? Who designed that?
Do coat hangers sound as good as Monster cables?
March 3, 2008 3:57pm
The problem is that they were testing by listening to a CD. They should have tested this properly with 220 gram vinyl played on a 3" thick solid quartz slab turntable propelled by an atomic motor. THEN you'd be able to discern the subtle differences. For sure.

What's nice here is if someone says "screw you" you can take them up on it.

I love how spying on your wife is the first thing that the vendor suggests. Nice.
New Arbitrary TSA requirement: all electronics out of your bag (cables, too)
February 8, 2008 2:47pm
I think the inconsistency is a strategy: keep people off guard. I can testify to the pervy Oakland policy though. I had to strip off a sweater I was over a cami and the cami was the bra type, not a tank top meant to be worn alone. I pleaded with them that it was underwear, not a shirt. No dice, girlie. Off with it. Nice.
Has Hillary Clinton seen the video for the Golden Earring song she plays?
January 28, 2008 4:11pm
Gee, that song is full of great inspirational lyrics for her campaign...
- - -
When the lady smiles,
She holds me in her hand
As a matter of fact,
She could always let me down
...and...
My friends tell me,
She's the beast inside your paradise
I guess you've heard it all before
A fallen angel,
That has got you hypnotized
And that always needs some more

Unless it's some kind of inside joke or an old favorite song, it seems like a weird choice.
Tripple Espresso Lamp by Francois Legault

I think that would be perfect in a contemporary breakfast nook or home office. Who appointed you tweetotaller anyway?! ;)
Police ordered to pull over people doing nothing wrong
December 18, 2007 12:54pm
I'm with deejayqueue and maxximoo - mailing the cards would be SO much better. It's freaking scary to be pulled over by the police, not to mention you hope that nobody sees you - having to explain away when your nosy neighbor saw you pulled over...
Make Fireplace Logs Out of Old Newspaper
December 10, 2007 5:50pm
I bet this is not so good for your chimney. We had one of those log roller thingies in the 70s and it was bad news. However, newspaper ink probably was a lot more toxic then than it is now.
SFWA's farting rainbows tee

Good thing it's not a more anatomically accurate image or they'd have to change to the NSFWA.
Loss of tourism costs USA $100B, 200K jobs, $16B in tax revenue
November 2, 2007 2:31pm
Ah but isn't this all offset by our own citizens staying home and not traveling abroad? Partly because we're afraid every other country in the world is crawling with terrorists and partly because we can't afford it anymore on our walmart paychecks?
FEMA workers play role of reporters
October 28, 2007 11:33am
I think the problem at FEMA is that it inherits a quasi-military mindset from Homeland Security. Someone gave the order to have a press conference NOW, and instead of questioning the timeline, they held a press conference. FEMA needs to really empower its people to be problem solvers and THINK, not just follow orders.
Everyone's Guide to By-Passing Internet Censorship
October 11, 2007 10:50am
Interesting guide. Minor issue for me... I don't quite see how web accelerators fit into the picture except to still provide continued access to very recently censored content. We've had some bad experiences with those in our academic environment - some of our licensed e-content providers interpret the behavior of web accelerators as "systematic downloading" which is typically a violation of our license agreements. So we get breach notices that have to be investigated etc. For a guide coming out of a major university with presumably a large college audience, I think a note of caution might be in order with routine use of web accelerators.

Yep, even the CBC doesn't claim her as Canadian.

I love that.
The Price of Copyright Infringement: $9,250 Per Song
October 6, 2007 4:01pm
I'm in Denver and this morning's Rocky Mountain News (thank you Marriott) has a celebratory story about the case in their business section entitled "Verdict music to Denver law firm's ears" about the local law firm (Home, Roberts & Owen) who represented the RIAA. The story indicates that their "computer security firm" detected the 24 songs in question remotely in a shared folder on Thomas's hard drive and that "investigators" found over 1700 songs on her computer, which they claim were downloaded but declined to pursue in court. Here's what I don't get. Why does the RIAA get to use what are essentially criminal investigation procedures for civil cases. If I think you wronged me in some way and I want to sue you, do I get to inspect your computer? I think not.
Nike's American Indian sneaker
September 27, 2007 12:14pm
Anyone else remember the movie Americathon (1979)? It was a post-oil dystopic comedy starring John Ritter. In the movie, NIKE is owned by a cartel wealthy Native Americans and renamed the National Indian Knitting Enterprise.
Cops complaining about cops writing cops tickets
September 25, 2007 2:33pm
Oh I can tooootally see how the absolute power corrupts absolutely. Check this - I've been a librarian for 15 years and I have yet to pay an overdue fine. And I've been a day late with my books at least twice. WOO HOO, in your FACE, suckas! Professional courtesy baby, yeah!
MIT student arrested for entering Boston airport with "fake bomb"
September 21, 2007 2:22pm
If TSA is not trained to tell the difference between electronics that are bombs and electronics that are not bombs, then logic dictates they need to prohibit ALL electronics, starting right now. If people claim that curtailing our rights is OK as long as it makes us safe, well then let's just go for it. No more laptops, cameras, phones, mp3 players in airports or airplanes at all. Carry-on, checked, or cargo.
TSA: "Sir, this is an improvised electronic device."
September 17, 2007 12:43pm
Where exactly does home made electronics appear on the list of prohibited items? Nowhere. Snowglobes appear (any size... bizarre) but not home made electronics. Assuming they don't qualify as sharps.

When this one and the S3 Pro UVIR came out you couldn't even buy them through consumer camera outlets, only via law enforcement suppliers.
BTW, I got a point & shoot digital camera converted to IR and you can definitely not see through clothes with it. I think these purpose-built ones have quite a bit more sensitivity. (My IR-converted camera does make people look oddly bloated and waxy, so I can see why celebrities might object)
