Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?
April 15, 2008 4:52pm
This sounds like a total cargo cult to me. "Messes with the bug's vision" sounds totally bogus -- why doesn't the sun have that effect?
Coral reefs coming back from the dead
April 8, 2008 7:54am
See also: story in today's NY Times about how artificial reefs off the coast of Delaware made from decommissioned NYC subway cars are so successful people are starting to fight over them.
Violent video-games are relaxing
April 4, 2008 11:36am
WoW is violent in the same way that bowling is violent.
Instant science-fiction convention finder, just add ZIP codes
March 27, 2008 9:26am
It's exciting that the internet has finally enabled nerds to find each other.
Science fiction authors offer unusual Homeland Security Advice
March 27, 2008 9:22am
If the Federation had only taken the simple, prudent step of installing deflector shields and quantum torpedo launchers atop the World Trade Center, we would not be having this conversation right now.
Replace GDP with something that reflects real quality of life
March 19, 2008 1:11pm
It's weird that the political party that's supposedly pro-business would be so averse to measuring quality of life. Even the most thick-headed businessperson knows that you don't measure business activity, you measure business outcomes.
TED 2008 -- Nancy Etcoff (channeled by June Cohen)

"Neutral"? Hardly. "Chaotic neutral," maybe.
Google issues statement on MSFT's hostile Yahoo bid
February 3, 2008 2:21pm
You know what would really help the internet thrive? If Google aligned itself with a bunch of government lawyers.
What's hurting newspapers
February 2, 2008 10:42am
This guy is trying hard to be a contrarian, and you gotta respect that. Some of what he's saying is true (and mostly obvious), but much of what he's saying isn't borne out by the evidence.
If newspapers were an "unsustainable business model" then why were did they survive for 200 years? That's a freaking incredible run for *any* business model.
"The demands of Wall Street" has been a very common whipping boy since the 19th century. But at the end of the day, what Wall Street wants you to do is not destroy your business -- or permit your business to be disrupted. Having worked for a small community paper that was bought out by a national chain, I gotta say, the chain manager were dopes but they were an order of magnitude less dopey than the local amateurs.
It is hooey that nobody reads anymore. People are reading more than ever now. They're just not reading newspapers.
Ska-toon on Yo Gabba Gabba!
January 21, 2008 12:28pm
Yo! Gabba Gabba itself was created by two members of superhero ska band The Aquabats, who have fantasized for years in their songs about having their own kids' TV show. You can actually see an Aquabat action figure at one point in this video.
Check Point Curry -- Berlin
January 10, 2008 9:42am
It's a pity that these currywurst stands are dying out. In decades past you used to see them on every street corner in Berlin; now not so much.
Frozen currywurst? An abomination before Goethe. True currywurst must be made from low-quality sausage, grilled outdoors, and served up by a hard-working yet surly immigrant who is almost certainly violating the tenets of his religion by serving you pork products.
The East side was never seedy. Even commie Germans insist on their tidiness.
Sky belt-trains of tomorrow, 1932
January 10, 2008 9:36am
I'm sorry, sir, you don't seem to understand. THERE CAN BE NO HITCHES.

London's panopticon of CCTVs aren't solving crimes
September 20, 2007 11:46pm
If you really think that more cops on the beat can prevent crime then you have absolutely no idea how the police operate.
Virgin America announces in-flight, air-to-ground broadband
September 13, 2007 8:55am
Please to fix headline -- they didn't "launch" the service, they "announced" the service.
Do not send your children out on railroad tracks to pick coal!
September 11, 2007 9:17am
Oh, man...I totally need to buy one of these signs so I can put it up in my kids' room.

This kind of censorship is completely absurd. It's a form of abstinence education. It attempts to outsource parenting to robots and bored customer service drones, while leaving kids totally unprepared for what goes on in the real world.
My six-year-old knows all the swear words. She also knows that kids aren't supposed to use them in polite company because that offend people. This is a little something that is known as "socialization" and it doesn't take place by burying your head in the sand.
