World of Warcraft limits your wealth to 2^31 copper
January 19, 2008 9:43am
Id hope this was a bank character. Whatever the case, if I remember right you can make a specified amount of money an object to place in your bank, which would eliminate this problem.

What you cant see are the illustrations on the face plates (visit the site for a full size image) done by this artist http://www.umop.com/. It pretty much compliments the name if anything could.
Spoon management system at a hipster cafe
January 18, 2008 2:46am
Unless you bring your own silverware when you eat out this isn't any worse than flatware placed on a white napkin at your average restaurant. Likely cleaner since its on display. Its simply contrasted by the dirty cup.
Help save Aaron's grandfather's house!
January 16, 2008 8:00am
The reason I signed this petition is two fold.
In reading the history of the mans family, they're long time residents (Revolutionary War or before). Many of the familys generations have perished in service of the country or simply provided a long standing impact (as much as one family and a large farm can) on its surrounds in South Carolina.
Progress and renewal are important. The state of the nations transportation infrastructure is varied and often poor if not dangerous. On the other hand, and this is purely a long term view, is that in a year very few if anyone will notice a change in the highway. Even the drop of monetary requirements for redirection will be lost in the giant bucket of this highway project (and that hoping against contractor waste and the typical losses to the taxpayer).
To paraphrase another signee many nations, centuries or millennia older than ours, understand the value of the past. The house could be moved, but how much of its innate heritage would be lost as a result? This is a rare opportunity to leave a rich facet of America intact, for itself and those that inhabit it, when so many have been 'paved over' to suit the current need.
And as a small response to #2, I think a counterbalance would how many people have been made to leave their preferred circumstance (such as this) with no voice whatsoever. Its not perfect or completely balanced but in this case at least a opportunity to speak out is available. The issue will likely come up publicly in the news (needing a governors input) if the case becomes strong enough. There will be an equal opportunity for opposition at that time, especially with regards to the large corporate and government forces behind the highway project.

I'm no slouch when it comes to spatial perception but this is a tough cookie. Me thinks primarily because of the angle and losing sight and orientation of whatever is beyond the first few rows.
Funny McDonald's flyer from Switzerland
January 9, 2008 5:37pm
Pretty sure this could be pursued by the Stones if they so chose to, though being such a localized incident I doubt it. Its likeness is very close to the original, even in its simplified form, and thats all that matters in a long time established brand like the Rolling Stones.

So whats to stop them (Native Americans) from setting up a dedicated natural area or artificial environment to grow the cactus in? My ignorance shows not knowing the particulars about the plants growth but still, seems like between the dealer and the reservation something could be done. :\

Dinosaur "mummy" discovered

"Whenever another important fossil gets discovered I go to the AOL homepage, click on the story, and see what all the ignorant nutbags are saying about "it can't possibly be 6 million years old-- the earth is only 5000 years old, blah blah blah blah blah."
Funnily enough I avoided the comments on this topic most of the day because I knew it'd be the opposite.
Microwave beam designed to fry electrical system of cars
December 3, 2007 12:47pm

Cheap billionaires
November 28, 2007 3:45am
To each there own. If nothing else, this is a nice thing to hear about when the media is flooded by people with marginal wealth, by comparison, who can't even handle or do anything useful with the handful of millions they have.
It makes me wonder what having a billion dollars would actually feel like. The number and value is so abstract or unreal that it wouldn't feel like wealth. :S

Rave flyers from Idaho, early-mid '90s.
November 25, 2007 10:56pm
As a designer, who began with doing rave fliers in the late 90s, its funny to note how much of this looks mostly punk or alternative in nature. At the very least its nice to see that the stale LSD driven, ZOMG blow your mind spiritual / space themes hadn't quite taken hold of the area yet.
What do political poster designs say?
November 24, 2007 5:31pm
All of the typical off-topic political thread jacking aside (looking at your #1, 6, 12 and the rest), I agree with #4.
Some marks have head-scratching aspects and some fail completely to communicate to the average viewer, which happens to be everyone in the country. And yes, its not rocket science to get your name out there on a piece of paper that is simple, incisive and appealing. A whole lot of designers do that for people everyday.
Mr Ward made some decent points but most were nit picks or his reading too far into the 'tea leaves' of design for the sake of article content (a failure in its own right, ever for the 'funnies').
Mistresses of GW Bush pinup calendar highlights the special interests behind the President
November 23, 2007 3:14am
Love the variety of era's and content. And the girls, hotz (more so since they're involved in an intelligent project like this).
Designs for a readable business-card-sized calendar
November 23, 2007 3:08am
Some good ideas, but like I commented in the blog, most submissions are just exercises in design. Fun, but fail at communicating a years calendar in a simple, functional way thats instantly understood and usable by the average viewer.
Some would be neat animated as flash or a screen saver thought.
Evolution of the heart emoticon <3
November 22, 2007 3:05pm
The problem would be the implied 'evolution' of the topic, an expanded history of its development and usage. The link author is just explaining their basic experience with the emote.
Cardboard rocket-ship playhouse
November 18, 2007 9:08pm
Perhaps the material is low cost initially, but getting large, sturdy cardboard (ie moving boxes) is not. Unless you, as #6 says, jump the right dumpster, your probably going to pay as much or more to get the materials to do it yourself (and that not pre-cut or folded).

A lot could be said here, and I have tried, but the media on the site speaks for itself. You'll just have to see for yourself.
As with anything, its not the final solution to the worlds problems. Sure, some laptops may end going in the wrong direction and become cash for other needs. Many will not and will reach people who are hungry for exposure to education, information, and the outside world.
Vinegar as wonder substance
November 12, 2007 11:47am
"Clean toilet bowl rings by turning off the input spigot, removing water from the bowl, and laying vinegar-soaked paper towels on the ring for an hour or more."
Too complicated. Let more water into the bowl by holding down the handle until water flows but doesn't flush. Then drop in some bleach and leave overnight. Flush in the morning.
US intelligence honcho channels Orwell, redefines privacy
November 11, 2007 9:55pm
"Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguard people's private communications and financial information..."
And when exactly did they plan to get better at doing this? They've already proven to be poor or purely deceptive handlers, either with their own or everyone else's information.
On the topic of Orwell, how about flooding their front office with the book. Maybe someone of some function will take it home and read it. :P
Corrupt Congressmen say no financial aid to schools that don't send money to DRM services and bust file-sharers
November 11, 2007 11:54am
No doubt all the losses from infringement that music industry is claiming could have been paid for with the money the industry likely gave these and other politicians to pursue that same purpose.

Prototype helmet for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter pilots
November 9, 2007 2:27pm
Seeing as how much sci-fi and actual science tend to mirror each other (purposely or by accident) this isn't all that wild. More interested to see what it looks like from the inside :o.
#3 - Considering the average fighter pilot visor is dark with no view of the eyes, I doubt it. Then again they do look like droopy eyes, maybe just for effect. >_

$1m painting found in trash
October 24, 2007 6:51pm
Yeah, not too sure what the complaint is about a $15k reward. Its a painting, that she found by accident, and likely only spent a few hours figuring out what it was and contacting authorities. A brand new car in exchange for a piece of oil covered cloth? Plus a % of the sales...sounds just keen to me.
Pakistan: Benazir Bhutto's motorcade bombed
October 18, 2007 6:52pm
Not very knowledgeable about that side of the world myself, but when I first read that the arrival of the ex-PM had been announced, or that she had announced it, that the human climate there would be very questionable. And so its turned out for the worse. Couldn't she have slipped in quietly and broke the news after the fact? *shrug
