Camera shop offers customer bribe to remove bad Amazon review

@Nobody

There were packing materials in the box. They were insufficient to stop the camera from freely sliding 4-5" in the box.

Make what you will of that.

Camera shop offers customer bribe to remove bad Amazon review

May 5, 2008 5:24pm

@SYNTAXERR0R

I called Cameta looking for "resolution" - I didn't really want any money back; I was just mad that I'd paid a lot for the shipping and they really didn't care about ensuring safe delivery.

Heck, I'm the first person to say it got here and works! It just wasn't due to Cameta displaying any care.

Anyways, back to your question -- had they not been rude when I called and just apologized, I likely would havenever written a thing. Take a look, I very rarely review a company that I've bought from. I'm a huge Amazon shopper and very, very rarely review. I felt the interaction was bad enough other people should be warned. Once I got to "Warning others" I'm way past $75 to make it go away.

I didn't want money, I don't expect money -- but if they wanted to make it up to me with money they would not have demanded I remove the review before they sent the cash. That is where this went wrong for me. Had they just sent me the cash, told me and asked that I rethink the review -- they'd likely have gotten what they wanted. As it is they were blatant about offering me a bribe and that feels counter to the intent of all seller reputation systems; so I shared it with the world.

@JRTom -- As the guy who complained, I think your assessment is 100%. I was upset, I called, I got pushed around on the phone about why I was complaining; as many people here have noted if it got here unbroken the packaging must have been good enough! I didn't agree with the pushing around and I left feedback, after Amazon asked for it.

If they offered me the $75 and asked that I consider taking the feedback down -- I would have. I like $75 more than I like a negative review. They didn't, however. They insisted I remove before they pay. That changed the game.

Thanks.

May 5, 2008 4:35pm

@syntaxERR0R -- I didn't get any money back. I have to remove my review, which is factually correct, in order to get my refund. I will not do this as I think its creepy. I called, they didn't offer to help me. I wrote review, they suddenly care a lot.

If it is a refund for the miserable packaging job, why do I need to remove my review? It won't change the fact that my camera was shipped loose in a box? Isn't the purpose of a seller review on Amazon to let people know this happens? I offered the seller a way out when I called them. They didn't offer me a refund on the phone, in fact -- they didn't offer it until AFTER I left my review.

The only thing Cameta is offering to pay for is removing the review. They are not offering to make good on the lame packaging.

I guess the thing to learn, from your POV, is that everyone should give Camera a bad review to get a shipping refund and then reverse the review?

@Michael A. Banks: It is a bribe and I will not take it. They do not "owe" me anything, what I ordered was delivered -- however my review is accurate to my experience. Offering me a refund ONLY if I remove the review strikes me as crooked.

Sanyo Xacti DMX-CA8 water-proof to 10 feet, one third of the Flip Video Ultra underwater housing

April 18, 2008 10:15am

I paid $140 for the Flip Ultra. Total cost, all in was around $190 for the Flip and the UW case.

The case will likely not implode, they tend to use the camera itself as part of the bracing for the case and I've found them to be pretty tough. I've used Olympus, Panasonic and Ikelite clear cases and below their rated depth the buttons just seem to get stuck in.

THAT IS NOT TO SAY I HAVE NEVER SEEN A HOUSING FLOOD. I see it all the time, be careful - it just hasn't happened to me. I tend to travel with 2 cameras and 2 housings when diving, generally I end up loaning one out to another diver who had an accident, but someday that diver will be me.

Chavez to USA: "Shove your terror list"

March 16, 2008 12:28pm

Thank you, William Randolph Hearst, for the quote in the headline that is not close to what Chavez actually said.

"Take your little list and shove it in your pocket" is at the very least a touch more deferential than the invented headline "Shove your terror list" would imply.

Indie Nintendo DS Game About a Jewish Boy in Nazi France Pushes Buttons

March 10, 2008 2:53pm

As someone who is super sensitive to how the holocaust is portrayed in the news and in general, from the POV of a Jewish American who has seen the impact it had on his family tree -- I can safely say this game does not bother me.

It sounds like a tasteful and educational interpretation of very real events. It is important we find new ways to educate and impart the cold fact of what happened in a meaningful manner. As genocide continues to be a theme in human interaction and the world is currently trying to resolve atrocities in places like Darfur, we need to keep an open mind.

Certainly this game feels more appropriate than Castle Wolfenstein or its ancestor Wolfenstein3D and those were a ton of fun!

Disneyland's plans to change It's a Small World ires fans

March 5, 2008 2:06pm

I love Disneyland. That said, Its a Small World is old, run down and letting it sit and rot doesn't keep with the Disney ethos either.

A refresh doesn't bother me at all nor does an America section. Why is it wrong to be proud of America? America has done a hell of a lot that sucks -- but we've also done a lot of wonderful things.

Heat-Sensitive Hot/Cold Mug

March 5, 2008 1:52pm

I remember when I saw my first mug like this. I believe I was the late 70s. I spent a lot of time pouring hot water into it, watching it change, emptying it and them putting it in the freezer to cool it down.

Took a long time for someone to decide having the mug change from a car to a boat isn't as cool as "Hot" and "Cold"

The washing machine killed it. I hope these are more sturdy.

Eton FR1000 Crank Radio with Walkie-Talkie

January 16, 2008 9:54pm

I love my Eton RedCross edition water resistant crank radio. We used it for 14+ hours during the last big NorCal power outage. I had some cheap ass one before and decided after the last major outage to get the Eton. It is truly wonderful, when we got bored of AM news we switched to the TV tuner and it was really clear.

The crank gets tedious, put in some AA's. You can do it -- but it takes a good 5-10 min of turning the crank to get a decent period of play before it burns out.

Anyone have a good source for ribbons?

Obama promises Net Neutrality law

October 30, 2007 6:17pm

Why doesn't Obama author a NetNeutrality law and propose it in the Senate, one of the two places Federal legislation is dealt with? Why do we need to elect him President so he can work on laws, instead of leaving it up to Illinois to decide if he gets to stay in the Senate?

Really, Net Neutrality is a red herring and its silly to see it co-opted into Presidential politics.

How a non-Neutral ISP could work

September 22, 2007 10:28am

When you display "How a non-neutral ISP could work" you are really fishing. I can draw you a picture of how a non-oxygen breathing human could work -- but you won't see any walking the streets tomorrow.

Net Neutrality is a massive red herring. The type of pricing structure the graphic Cory provided won't work for the many, many reasons already called out. In essence, people will just not choose to work with an ISP that tries that crap.

The need for tiered pricing models and priority delivery is, however, real. There are some services that are enabled by a higher quality of service and won't work right on a network that can guarantee certain delivery metrics. It is not economic to try and raise the entire network to quality levels that can support those services when the bulk of internet data transfer can happen at the old 32cent stamp postage rate. Why pay for FedEx when you don't need it?

There has not been any meaningful move by a NSP to block routing to any portion of the internet on tier rate structure. Liken the tiered pricing to various types of mail. Sometimes you need Overnight delivery and sometimes First Class mail is just fine.

Net Neutrality isn't about censorship. Its not even a real issue past the media companies wanting to force some regulation on the NSPs to keep them from charging market rates. If you look a the history of the massive telco crash, you may realize that some of the prime players on the "Net Neutrality kills censorship" side of the debate, they are all major benefactors of the telcom crash and have been paying below-cost rates for years. They do not want to see new services created that they have to pay more for access to and they certainly don't want to pay the telecoms any margin to get access to those services.

When you display "How a non-neutral ISP could work" you are really fishing. I can draw you a picture of how a non-oxygen breathing human could work -- but you won't see any walking the streets tomorrow.
