Engineering approach to global climate change
March 4, 2008 10:35am
The engineered solution is the only viable solution.
It is important regardless of one's views on climate change and its causes. I don't understand why doubters claim and believers deride the idea that it isn't man made.
If global warming _isn't_ caused by man, doesn't that mean we're even more fucked? If it isn't us, we still need to deal with the consequences, and can't just stop doing what we're doing.
I find it hard to believe that government regulation or voluntary cutbacks will solve this issue. If the cheapest solution is also best for the environment, we'll all win.
This means not only traveling less, working from home, riding bikes, etc.
It also means buying solar power because it is cheaper than coal. That is the only solution, and it is up to the hackers and geeks to make it happen.

Divided by maggots?
Dividing by a small value makes something bigger. So to augment the value, divide by a Unicorn or something else that has a very small value of disgusting.

They should have a mode where users charge the batteries with their own power, on downhill, etc.

Any recommendations on cheap-but-good-enough touchscreen input devices for those looking to, say, learn to draw, but have no need for it professionally?
Lights Out: "turn your electricity off" event photos
October 21, 2007 11:51am
This is ludicrous. AC & heating take orders of magnitude more energy than lighting.
Do you think a "turn off your AC" campaign in Las Vegas could handle the PR hit of the elderly that die because of it?
There are real ways to solve energy problems. One of the first steps is to avoid stunts that don't actually do anything to help the environment. If you really care, you shouldn't try to sell warm fuzzies.
VinylDisc hybrid plays on turntables or optical drives
October 19, 2007 10:24am
Fun anecdote:
A friend sent me 2 CD-Rs with vinyl on the top. It looked like a novelty and no data on the top, which turned out to be correct.
He periodically would send me good electronic music CDs, sometimes quite abstract.
I popped these CDs into a regular player, and enjoyed a fiew seconds of some very noisy, abstract electronica. But something went wrong, and I only heard static for a while.
I thought this was weird. Why would he send blank or corrupted discs? But then I popped the CDs into a computer and found them to be DATA CDS! The noise I enjoyed was just some file table or header, with the static being the body of the mp3s on the disks. Ridiculous.
WSJ on space elevators
September 2, 2007 10:39am
Actually, a broken space elevator wouldn't do much harm at all. A substance that light has a very low terminal velocity. That which didn't burn up would be broken into pieces and float to the ground.
The whole point is that the ribbon is incredibly thin.
Shacked-up couples share housework better than marrieds
August 29, 2007 10:22am
Why should the house work be equally divided?
Is it bad for a stay at home dad to do more house work but less bring-home-the-bacon work?
I think the only issue is conflict. If a difference in house work is resented and that isn't discussed, it's bad for the couple.

You should consider the innovation at HackerNews for comment policy. Allow users to mod comments up and down. In addition, have oracle users whose mods count as truth. Users who approximate the votes of oracles matter more. Low modded comments go unseen by default. In this fashion, you can have a few people guide a community to stay on the right track.

Also, it is essential that you allow threaded comments.

If the small publishers don't like it, perhaps they'd like to try FedEx, or some other private entity that doesn't use public funds to move dead trees around.
I'm all for the culture of the zine, but readers should be willing to pay for it. The way to do this is to go digital, and have the option paper delivery.
Of course, government making decisions to please large corporations is just one big cluster fuck. "Less government good" is pretty much the only consistent opinion out there.
