Security guards threaten NPR photos with arrest for shooting panorama of DC's Union Station

May 13, 2008 9:11pm

That picture's amazing. The way you can zoom way down into the background and still be able to read text on the souvenirs in those stands reminds me of that scene in Blade Runner.

Ballet dancers perform to the Pixies

Awesome. I'd love to see the look on all the family members faces who had no idea what music their darling little ballerinas were dancing too.

Middlesbrough cops, goons and clerks grab and detain photographer for shooting on a public street

April 22, 2008 8:32am

There was an incident in Seattle a couple years ago in which a guy had been taking pictures of the Ballard Locks in a public park as part of a photography class and someone turned him in as a possible terrorist because he happened to be middle eastern. Police showed up at his doorstep hours later to question him about it and a few days later was arrested for taking pictures at the same location. Ignoring the fact that the Ballard Locks are a very popular tourist attraction and people take pictures there everyday. They almost got away with it though because the Locks are a "federal" facility and there is a law on the books banning photography of government facilities.

Makes me think of the bumperstickers you see in skate shops that say "Skateboarding is not a crime." Need to start making T-shirts that say "Photography is not a crime" on the front and have the text of the Photographer's rights on the back.

Waterboarding in Cambodia

Such a sickening and sobering chapter of history. Such a terrible pity our own government is now employing the same "interrogation" techinques as that bastard Pol Pot.

I would love to have one of those screens installed in my rec room. My kids would probably spend more time playing with that than the Wii we got for Christmas!! Hell, integrate a screen like that with the Wii and imagine the fun you could have.

Check out this video that shows some more "modules" being interacted with by kids. Every children's museum needs to have one of these permanently instaled.

Spoiled teenage pageant princess

January 6, 2008 3:17pm

I'm so sick of all these reality shows that do nothing more than shine a spotlight on people who feel the world owes them everything. In shining the spotlight on these people, even if the producers intent is to spoof them a little, it feeds their egos, which are clearly over fed already. Too many shows about real Orange County wives, and spoiled little shits demanding fireworks at their Sweet 16 birthday parties, and egotistical families of models.

Reality my ass!!

For a truly disturbing look into child beauty pageants, check out a film called "Painted Babies". It follows the families of two 5 year old pageant competitors through a season of competitions. Really feel sorry of kids that age who are thrust into that kind of world. You get the feeling their parents are trying to make up for a failed modeling career by living vicariously through their children. I get that feeling from the parents in that clip above. I almost wish poverty on people like that so they can experience having to work for a living.

Netflix and HD: a DRM disaster that costs you your videos and control of your hardware

January 3, 2008 6:44am

Was just thinking what Scoots (#15) said. I think th is has everything to do with Netflix and their deal with LG. Here's a link to an article from the NYT about it.

High-altitude paper airplane flight

January 2, 2008 10:01am

Love it! Some friends and I use to do something similar from the top story of a parking garage in downtown Spokane. We'd grab about a dozen ad flyers from a department store and go up to the top of his 7 or 8 story parking garage and throw two and three at a time and see who's flew the furthest, who's stayed aloft the longest.
Nothing compared to the video but it brought back memories.

If you browse through that website it becomes painfully obvious that, while it is a real store, it's product is certainly meant as satire. Check out the Anti-Mastubatory Cream or the Righteous Tin Bank for examples.

I would agree with the editor personally and I hope Larson simply shrugs it off. This would be a ridiculous thing to sue over.

Oops. Seems Scoutmaster's post has disappeared.

Driver tasered for refusing to sign traffic ticket

November 27, 2007 4:14pm

Scoutmaster in post #35 said: "Telling him he was under arrest was no surprise to this jerk and once he started to walk away, tasering him was a final act of self-defense."

Give me a break. There were several options the cop could have used first. His voice being the first option. He should have told the driver his options and explained that not signing the ticket could lead to his arrest. But instead acting like a rational thinking individual, the cop went for the Taser the second he set down his notebook. That was out of line. Period. There was nothing in the drivers behavior to warrant that up to that point. I agree with what Teresa said in post #34. This is a disturbing trend and I really think Police forces need to start looking at reviewing the policy that has led to police feeling the Taser should be used so freely.

That said, I'm putting my money on this being determined to be a justified use of the taser only because the guy was fingering his pocket as he walked back to his car. All the cop needs to say is when he saw the guy reaching for his pocket he thought he might be going for a weapon. As a juror I would disagree with that reasoning, but I'm betting that's how it goes down.

Boing Boing's new community features!

Not that this is all that pressing of an issue, but is there a way to remove a post from your favorites list? I clicked on the "favorite this" link accidentally and now can't figure out how to remove that post from the list. Seems like just a simple, "un-favorite this" link would do the trick.

Radiohead DRM-free "box-set"

November 6, 2007 12:07am

Price seem a tad steep for the USB stick. 79.99 British pounds for the USB stick equals about $167 US. I've already got 6 of the 7 albums already so I'll be passing on it. Kick ass packaging though. Great stuff if you're a serious collector I guess.
And since the band isn't signed with EMI anymore, this probably doesn't have their approval. Seems like something thrown together by EMI to make another quick wad of cash off the band now that their grabbing headlines. Kind of seems like the record company slapping back.

Visions of the Future/Listography

October 2, 2007 11:04pm

Anyway of getting some other format of downloadable video? When I download the .mp4 I get a message that says "error - 2002: a bad public movie atom was found in this movie". Anyone else get this?

Would be nice to see it available in something like an .avi or .mov. That way I could put it on my Zen:Vision player. (Not everyone uses IPods.)

Dont Tase Me, Bro: the new LOLcats

September 19, 2007 10:00pm

At an e-mailer's request, a local DJ here in Seattle had his audio guy create a mashup of the Taser guy and Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused", with the Taser guy filling in for Plant in the break. He's put the MP3 online.
Enjoy!
