Fluxx -- Nomic card game
January 29, 2008 12:05pm
Fluxx is one of my favorite games, and it's interesting the reactions that it gets out of people... My real life experiences with showing people the game have about matched that of the commenters here. It's very love-or-hate. Programmers seem to love it, by my experiences. There's definitely a strategy to the game, although a lot of people don't seem to believe that. But it's fun even if you're not trying to strategize, and you just want a casual game to have around for socializing. I've heard it compared to Uno before, and I can see that, but I don't really care for Uno and I'm a huge Fluxx fan. Easiest way to find out if you like it is to buy a deck!
Books that make you dumb: chart
January 25, 2008 3:17pm
@7 - and The Bell Jar is not a biography, it's a highly autobiographical novel. A lot of the color-coding (primarily as it deals with 'classics') is questionable, and some of the overlaps (Bible vs. Holy Bible, Shakespeare vs. Hamlet, &c.) are also rather peculiar. Interesting to look at, hard to take anything out of.
Cloverfield's visual gaffe -- stuff movie sf usually gets wrong
January 24, 2008 12:03am
Agree with #4. I like Gibson's work, but this sort of sci-fi snobbery is kind of ridiculous. Perhaps a film like this which is quite popular and well-received will get more of the masses interested in other (quite possibly 'better') sci-fi works, eh? Regardless, this argument is just sort of a 'who cares' for sci-fi elitists to sneer at.

Pacifist Warcraft player trying to hit the top without killing anything
January 8, 2008 11:37pm
Pacifism has long been a voluntary challenge in some Roguelike games (I play SLASH'EM, not sure about other variants). It's an insanely difficult challenge. I've watched my mates play WoW but never played myself... But I would imagine leveling up without killing is crazy-hard.
Pimpstar animated wheels -- "a huge leap forward in the evolution of the wheel"
January 8, 2008 1:10pm
Why isn't everyone complaining that this is old news?! I thought that was trendy. Anyway, that wasn't meant to be an implied complaint on my part - I remember seeing promotional videos for these last year, but I hadn't seen this video yet. They've stepped it up a notch, gave it a real pimp story line! What amazed me about this product from the beginning was that they actually thought it was smart to market it as being able to change on-the-fly, with no apparent warnings like 'DO NOT USE YOUR LAPTOP WHILE DRIVING,' &c... Lawsuit waiting to happen.
I'm sure these are already illegal many places, as are the distracting blue & green body light kits and junk like that.
UK mall bans grandparents for trying to photo their grandkids
January 3, 2008 4:41pm
@OM, #6 - Agreed, a lot of "mall cops" are nothing of the sort. Yet we have quite the opposite problem in Frederick, MD. Our pathetic little one-story mall that is rarely even patronized (and is soon to be destroyed and turned into a new super-dee-duper mall) is "protected" by real cops. I don't mean real ex-cops, I mean real, on duty cops. Why is this a problem? Because for whatever reason, that pathetic little mall is above paying the standard cop rental fee, so those on-duty officers are there for free. The cops doing that shift also get paid more for whatever reason. So my tax money goes toward paying police officers to hang out at a nearly empty mall and stop people from robbing the 33 cent store. It's been a big, ongoing stink around here. Also, while we don't have the no-
Anyway, the whole no-cameras thing is standard policy in pretty much any mall. I agree this was taken a bit too far but I don't think it's worth making a huge stink over. I am a bit surprised because I didn't think they were as quick to jump on the "AH! TERR'ST" fear in the U.K. Yes it's an unfortunate thing, and it should be looked into and all, and the guards should be trained to handle minor issues with a bit more tact, but I don't think it's a huge deal.
Fox helps itself to photo of blogger's dog
December 26, 2007 10:43am
Don't care too much if it's the same dog or not, don't care too much about the story period... But for those who don't think someone would go through the trouble of 'shopping the hat onto the dog... Look at the full screen cap on the blogger's page.... The hat the guy is wearing and the hat the dog is wearing appear identical in the folds, shadows, &c... To me it's clear that the hat was 'shopped on -some- dog, if nothing else. (Unless they found a nearly identical pug, wearing a nearly identical santa suit, in a nearly identical pose... -but- that pug was also wearing a hat, and then they 'shopped that hat onto the guy. Yeah, that's probably it.)
Confusing sandwich coupon
December 25, 2007 5:26pm
If it's a three-for-two as so many people suspect, then it's not really a "2 for" deal, it's more of a "1.5 for" deal, eh?

The Voodoo U cover art was what got me interested in Coop's work in the first place... The cover was awesome and it didn't take much effort to figure out who created it... Anyway, Coop's stuff still rocks, and I hope BB keeps on covering it...
