I keep my Desktop free of icons. Everything I download goes onto my Desktop. When you can't find anything because the thing looks so cluttered you tend to organise (i.e. move for permanent storage or delete) it pretty quick.

My wife has made me an 8-bit Mario (from Super Mario Bros) and Link (from Zelda II). For the Mario one (photo of part of it, I grabbed a screenshot and used Stitch to recreate the pixels as a cross stitch pattern. For the Link one, she did it by freehand and it didn't turn out quite as accurate, but it does have it's own "home made" charms (such as the shield being mistaken for the sword).

As it turns out, 8-bit and 16-bit images are suited very well to cross stitching.
