Pilot shoots hole in cockpit - trust is not transitive

Hopefully someone will be able to explain why pilots are equipped with ammunition that can puncture the fuselage. I assumed they were all issued frangible bullets.
Macbook Pro and WPA Wi-Fi Error
December 29, 2007 3:31pm
I just got a new Macbook Pro about three weeks ago, and it didn't work with my wifi setup (Linksys WRT-54g, revision 5). After I flashed to the most recent firmware for the router, everything worked. The iPhone I'd bought a month prior also began magically working on the wifi (same problem, couldn't connect to WPA).

Cory - which dual-wan router are you using? I have a Hotbrick and I'm not totally satisfied with it.
Thanks!

IceDozer Plus Scraper

I had an older version of this that had a separate snow brush. The brush broke halfway through the season, but the ice scraper is still going strong.
Japanese "melody roads" play tunes as you drive over them

My mother swears that this was tried in the Chicago area in the 1950s, that certain roads would groan "slow down".
Suunto Core: Wristwatch Bristling with Sensors
October 24, 2007 12:37pm
Suunto makes really neat stuff, but unfortunately they have reputation for terrible customer service.
Also, after reading a bunch of customer reviews (on Amazon and elsewhere), I get the feeling that Suunto products are pretty delicate compared to most wristwatches.

I wonder how often these would be mistaken for mints...
Bobby Darrin's Custom-Made Mellotron on eBay
September 27, 2007 9:26am
The Mellotron is one of the most under-appreciated musical devices of the 60s. My favorite examples are on the early King Crimson albums (the smack-you-in-the-face string parts from "The Court of the Crimson King" and "Epitaph", for example).
Unfortunately, (like a lot of gear from that era) it's a sisyphean ordeal to keep it running and in tune. When the Mellotron heats up, the tape loops start to stretch and detune. But like an original Minimoog, the idiosyncratic imperfection is what makes the sound so... "real".
Mobile phones for owl tracking
August 28, 2007 12:31pm
And to think, for years I've been using owls to help count mobile phones.
