Yellow Drum Machine Robot is Cute as a Button

March 24, 2008 12:21pm

It's head doesn't have two cameras, but a single ultrasonic sensor. It's finding drum-able objects via sonar!

California asks for Real ID extension, but won't promise to comply

March 20, 2008 6:42pm

"Californians without passports would also have been barred... unless they have a passport."

This is exactly the kind of trickery I've come to expect from the DHS. Go Montana.

BD+: Blu-ray's Last DRM Defense

February 27, 2008 12:38pm

This really reminds me of the NES authorization lock-out chip, the 10NES. That way only approved games could be played, until rogue companies figured out ways around it.

I can just cut pin 4 on the IC in my BluRay player and everything will work fine, right? ;)

French people eat until they're full, Americans eat until the food's gone

February 23, 2008 5:15pm

As I view this post via Google Reader there is an advertisement for Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches attached to the bottom that reads:

"Sure there are things in your freezer with fewer calories, ice comes to mind."

Also, in regards to #5, technically the etiquette-minded thing to do is have boxed up what you think you can't eat before you begin eating, and anything left on your plate is to be thrown out. I've been trying this recently and it's great, I don't feel too full, and I've saved a good-sized portion that can be tomorrow's lunch.

Nokia's "remade" Prototype Phone

Hey, I know that symbol.

Unlocked! Neuros's open logo for non-DRMed media and devices

December 18, 2007 10:41pm

While I am completely anti-DRM, and agree with the idea of branding DRM-free media, I don't think that "unlocked" is the right brand.

"Unlocked" suggests that at some point the media was "locked" and has now been freed, that "locked" is the default or natural state of media.

The logo does look pretty snappy, though.

Sno-Baller Snow Ball Maker

December 18, 2007 8:35am

I think what it's really all about is going to be what type of snow falls where you live. Some places get very heavy, wet snow, the kind that's perfect for snowballs, and I could see this working very well.

Some places get very light, dry snow, where you couldn't pack a snowball to save your life no matter what method you choose. If you're lucky enough to live here, stop fucking around with snowballs and get your skis on already.

Video: The Paradox of Choice, or Why Apple Only Sells Four Computers

December 11, 2007 12:55pm

The example that really struck me was the 6.5 million stereo component combinations. The average person probably doesn't know a thing about any one of those components beyond its basic operation. At some point it must seem that if all the choices do basically the same thing then must all basically be the same, and one is as good as another. So they pick the one that comes in pink or whatever.

At least, I think this sort of reasoning is how people I know keep purchasing bullshit laptops from HP or Compaq.

Home Is Where Their Hearts Are: A Boing Boing Gadgets Holiday Deployment Checklist

Just what I've always wanted, a skull cap riot helmet, complete with face shield and fabric mullet.

Play This Free Game Now: Passage

December 3, 2007 1:53pm

The game: beautiful.

JMG totally misses it. DeeJayQueue nails it.

Follow-Up: Greenpeace Says Nintendo Didn't Respond to E-Waste Queries

November 30, 2007 1:53pm

Oh, it's okay. It's just this sort of tactic that makes people not listen to them anyway, it's much the same as the bullshit PETA spews out. So, let's give them the standard response.

"Psh, Greenpeace. Whatever, you hippies."

Bizarro Genius Baby -- latest MC Frontalot nerdcore video

November 29, 2007 11:27pm

I recently saw the Front at the Portland stop on his tour. After the show, I shook his hand and said, "If it weren't for you, a computer kid like me might not be listening to Biggie Smalls today."

How to stop restaurant tip fraud

November 15, 2007 10:21am

I work as a pizza delivery driver, and we take credit card orders over the phone, then take the usual slip to the customer to sign along with their pie. We had to fire someone for cheating on their tips just like this.

However, the few times I've been tipped in some really odd change on a credit order, say $3.34 on a $15 order, when I enter my tip into the VISA machine I would just drop the weird change and change the tip to $3.00, for a total of $18. I don't want your silly change, but I don't think you can get made if I charge you less than you wrote down, right?

Tomy Heli-Q Mini R/C Helicopter

October 26, 2007 11:38am

My roommate had one of these (he got it from his grandfather, don't know where he got it), and it was really fun, for about 20 minutes, when we crash landed in the parking lot and chipped a rotor blade. It no longer flys, just thrashes around on the ground.

Trailer for Steve Gould's JUMPER

October 10, 2007 2:32am

yes yes YES. I too have read this book many times, loving it every time. I am pumped for this movie!

LEGO Exo-Force Aero Booster

August 29, 2007 11:13am

Oh, also:

In this set, the red and white "jet pack" section features a gun type grip to hold it by while you fly it, shoots missiles, and detaches from the mech. Pretty cool.

LEGO Exo-Force Aero Booster

August 29, 2007 11:07am

I too felt that Lego had been going the way of too many specialized pieces in recent years, but on a whim (and a sale price) I bought this Exo-Force set a while back, and was surprised at just how nice it is. I saw the very same set featured here at the store just last night, and was very tempted to get it.
