Funny tech support transcripts

March 7, 2008 12:52am

Hmm... they gave him an CD of actual recordings? Doesn't anyone see a privacy problem there, no matter how funny the recordings might be? I surely wouldn't want any of my calls to any tech support ending up by any newspaper...

Carved wooden killer mechas

February 26, 2008 11:19am

I'm not sure if "killer mecha" is an adequat description. The original title is "A Prosthetic Suit For Stephen Hawking w/ Japanese Steel" :)

The gun / Lysistrata is pretty cool, too.

Wind turbine self destructs (video)

February 25, 2008 11:53pm

@23: I think so. According to the second video mentioned above, there were technicians inside when the brake failed. I guess they had more important things in mind than saving their truck when the turbine went postal and ran like hell instead. :)

Photo of extension cord in swimming pool

January 7, 2008 1:03pm

This looks like the chances of electrocution are probably higher than the chances of this going "well". It'll probably tilt to either side any second. There's probably water leaking through the seams even at the time of the photo.

Nobody who can still think clear enough to build something like that would get into this pool. I think it's a joke.

(although I'll watch the next Darwin Awards closely...)

Super Mario level recreated with Doom engine

January 5, 2008 2:52am

I'm waiting for the ego-shooter-jump-'n-run-version. You could just make the path so narrow that you can only move forward and backward and have no weapons and jump every enemy to death. Would be an interesting perspective. :)

Czech art group to stand trial for putting mushroom cloud on TV

January 5, 2008 2:40am

Contrary to popular belief, the mushroom cloud does not indicate a nuclear explosion, but merely any big explosion. Their most common cause is volcanic eruptions.

Interesting, I didn't think that would be the most common cause.

In this case, however, the presence of long lasting blinding light and later on some interference would seem to me like a sure sign of an atomic explosion. (if it wasn't fake anyway) :)

Chris Thompson's Time Lapse Intervalometer for SLR Cameras

January 4, 2008 4:12pm

This is a cool gadget, but be careful with timelapse and DSLR cameras. Due to their more mechanical nature, they do have a higher wear than compact cameras and therefore can take less pictures in the long run.

Usually this is not a problem, because even highly addicted photgraphy behaviour won't kill you camera easily. I heard rumors that consumer DSLRs are specified to last about 30'000 shots.

With timelapse, however you usually do a hell of a lot more shots, even for digital standards. Therefore, your camera might wear out earlier.

This is probably the reason, why there is not official interval for example for Canon consumer DSLRs (at least last time I checked). There is one for the professional versions, which last longer.

Czech art group to stand trial for putting mushroom cloud on TV

January 4, 2008 3:26pm

Does anyone have some background information about what happened because of this hoax?

While I think this hack was very cool, I'm also wondering about potential downsides. It wouldn't be so cool if someone died of an heart attack because he thought the third world war was starting...

Communist monuments of Yugoslavia

January 4, 2008 3:55am

The rightmost monument looks just like an angel from Neon Genesis Evangelion. I wonder when a giant robot is going to jump into the picture to fight it. ^_^

Tentacle chandeliers

December 23, 2007 10:12am

I wonder what has more impact on your perceived sanity. Having tentacle chandeliers hanging around, or having spent a fortune on them. :)

Douglas Hammers

December 13, 2007 6:46am

I'm wondering if those holes would give some trouble with smaller nails. They look stylish, though... :)

Machine Girl trailer: 1 girl, 1 arm, 1 gun, pure win.

December 11, 2007 12:22am

This trailer feels similar to the "El Machete" Trailer before one of the Grindhouse movies... I'll only believe that there is going to be a real movie behind this when I see it. :)

Rogers ISP of Canada breaks into your browsing session to tell you off for using the net too much

December 11, 2007 12:17am

I agree with VIK, this "break in" looks to me like a feature which can be useful to many users.

I once had an ISP which messed with your browsing sessions in an really annoying way. Every time you dialled in, the first page would be redirected to the providers homepage. It regularly broke downloads or saved browsing sessions... THAT sucked.

Thesixtyone: Music discovery game connects indies and fans

December 10, 2007 12:30am

Isn't that system heavily pushing for mainstream ratings? If you actively seek unknown music and rate it, you are going to lose points if others do not discover it. There seems to be little incentive to rate new music this way.

Egyptian anti-torture blogger says YouTube shut his account.

November 30, 2007 2:39am

If local backups were too dangerous, he could at least have uploaded them somewhere else. YouTube is not the only video plattform available.

Disclaimer: I don't want to speak bad of this blogger who seems to have done a great job. It is just yet another example of how often people forget to back up important data.
